X2 was my favorite too and I even revisited it recently. However the inability to remap keys drove me crazy enough to look out alternative solutions and I found one in the shape of Joy To Key. Using that I can remap the keys now to anything I like and, now that I have, I have to say X2 still looks and plays pretty good considering how old it is.
I hope the new game has more in common with X2, especially cockpits as I really missed those from the X3 series, although, with certain mods, you can bring some of them back again in the X3 series too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCxIgZEIiiU
After watching the X4 video with the dev feedback I was quite surprised how they acknowledge that Rebirth caught a lot of criticism from fans and it seems that they want to address at least some of these issues with X4.
Cautiously hyped.

The thread is long - can someone summarize in short the issues with previous X-games? Never seen them, but the X4 looks quite promising (if they deliver of course).. still wishes and reality are two different things...
Just couple of words what were main problems in the past
I think that's a fair enough standpoint and Egosoft know full well they have a lot to prove with this game. Mind you, with all the patches Rebirth has had since it came out,...it's not a bad game, at least I think so anyways.

Issues? That's a complex question but let me summarise quickly each game in the series.
X Beyond The Frontier & X-Tended, it's sort of stand alone addon, were the first games. Graphically primitive by todays standards they might be but it was on this foundation the later games would be built upon. You could only fly one ship in the first game and in the addon/stand alone expansion fly other ships. If your interested in the game's lore these represent chapter 1
X2 The Threat (my personal favorite) further refined the games mechanics, improved the graphics and for me had a good balance between complexity and usability in it's UI. It also had cool cockpits for it's ships and like the first game a drop in drop out plot you could do at your own pace.
X3 Series. For many, this is when the series got serious about empire building. There was simply tons of options for controlling and managing your budding trade empire. Cockpits were removed, graphics were greatly improved upon and some of the best mods ever cover this series. X3 has 3 games X Reunion, X3 Terran Conflict and X3 Albion Prelude
X Rebirth. Technically this game is still part of the X3 series as Egosoft said this wasn't X4. This game put the player back in just one ship, had a full cockpit but had multiple control issues and game breaking bugs when it first came out. It did however allow walking around on stations and meeting NPCs, a first for the X series. Since it's shaky start Egosoft patched the game extensively, also adding a couple of expansions too.
It's hard to say which game is better than another as people look for different things from these games. Being more into flying ships with cockpits and full docking at stations, I like X2 and, it has to be said since they fixed alot of it's problems, X Rebirth, however if your wanting to build an empire, the X3 series might be a better choice for you. But just wait, someone else will come along and give you a completely different take on things, such is the nature of this game series!
Finally, here is the intros and trailers from all the games so you can make up your own mind.
I first played X2 which I reckon was my favourite too. If I remember correctly, Egosoft hadn't nerfed the Hyperion yet and t'was the best all rounder ship to fly/use.
X3 was when Egosoft tried to change things around and it went down hill with Rebirth.
The Hyperion was a ship in X3 Reunion (arguably, *the* best ship in X3 Reunion), it was also available in TC/AP but with a bit different stats. The OP ship of X2 was the M6 Teladi Osprey, it could mop up entire Xenon sectors on its own.
X3 enhanced several major things over X2 (graphics of course, but also most quantity of content for ships, stations and sectors, management, etc.) while also losing some in the process (cockpit, stations interiors, different stations for every races, a good bit of the immersion factor in general).
X Rebirth was an almost complete start over, basicly an updated X-Btf on a new game engine on which to build the next games iterations. X4 is for this new course more or less what X-Tension has been for the previous. Finger crossed, but I'm confident.
I think the biggest change are 2 things.
First having a real competition, there is a company that will expand and make money as you do. Building stations and getting a privat fleet to harrass you or even sabotage your efforts. By attacking stations/ tradeships ect. So you actually have to invest into military stuff and dont worry police forces will not interfere with the privat war.
Second an actual xenon threat that also expands and behaves a abit diffrent then normal and starts at the far end of the galaxy while slowly expanding, you get war reports about invasion fleets attacking close sectors and taking them over.
It adds a lot of very nice things to make empire building and large fleetmovements less of a chore. Check it out.
Thing is though you were still heavily constrained by the performance of X3 and limited by the interface, with X4 these things have potentially (because we have to wait and see) been addressed. The concept of Litcubes universe in X4 is exciting and I think would be unique among space sims were it to happen.

Yes, you are right. The Hyperion was introduced in X3 Reunion and nerfed in Terran Conflict or Albion Prelude? Did you have to hijack it in right from the start? I remember Osprey was the best all rounder ship maybe in X2?
Travelling in terran sectors was a pain as t'was big and you had to enter far away starports to jump to the next sector.
Getting back to X2 for a moment, a High Definition pack containing new textures for both the ships & stations as well as new backgrounds has just been released on Mod DB. I think they really improve the looks of the game alot. The rest of the game is left just as is with no changes to it's gameplay, it's an easy install too;just drop the new files into the main X2 directory and your good to go. Have a look for yourself..

Cool! Now if only I knew where my copy of the game went... lol! I'd definitely fire this up again since I remember enjoying it back in the day. The screenshots here are pretty nice.
