News Elite Dangerous 2.4 - The Return

God I hope there's some impressive sounding revelations to come! eg: Improved exploration mechanics and hopefully improved exploration immersion too. eg: Geysers km high. Aurora borealis. Electrical storms. Liquids. Rain. Lakes. Rivers. Atmospherics. Etc...

Imagine if landing got more technically difficult - eg: Landing in the middle of a windy/rainy electrical storm :)

ps: No reason why lifeless planets can't have clouds, rain, rivers, streams, lakes, seas etc...

Totally this!

I'm less looking forward planet with atmosphere for the landscape than meteorology simulation (vector and scalar fields) because of the obvious gameplay impacts on ship handling and visual impact too as simulating those fields would bring Gas giants flybys on the table too!

Those and many more are the reasons why I wish for atmospheric planets more than anything else in this game.

Obviously they had folks working on surfaces well over 2yrs ago, ready for Horizons. They've been doing some improvements since then, but what else have they been doing with their time? You expect stuff for atmospherics and the like surely?

You're setting yourself up for dissapointment my friend, Sammarco has mentioned a few times that this work "hasn't yet started".

Understood, but:-
1) I still can't fathom what 100+ people have been doing for two years then?
2) What have the surface engine folks been doing for two years then?

My brain is telling me a significant number of people have surely been ploughing away at V3 super duper stuff. But then - as you highlight - FD seem to say everything and anything to suggest this isn't the case?

If you're right, I'll be flat out of hope then...

playing their cards close to their chest at this point is just the smart thing to do. You can watch the rest of the industry that have Early Alpha's showing off their ideas and execution. They already have a game that is out, with a player base. They will respond to market pressure (ie if there is a game close to release that they think will take away a lot of the player base) but right now, they are in a good position to try and sit, develop the things they want without having to promise or live up to expectations based on a few screenshots/pre-renders and YouTubers hype. It allows them to keep an eye on what they need to target without building expectations.

Seriously FDev are damned if they do and damned if they don't they could (for example) drop us atmospheric worlds and spacelegs in a single patch and people would still complain about something silly and make out it is the worse game of all time.

Give it a rest for a few moments and lets just wait and see what they want to show us

2+ years of development doesn't always result in upfront user intractable content. often it is about building or rebuilding the codebase to be more flexible or efficient. Its like a science experiment... took us 6 years to build one of the largest dark matter experiments in the world... most days where spent doing the ground work... not just clobbering things together for the sake of taking pictures to prove progress

Fair point... But it's slightly worrying when the team building the largest dark matter experiments in the world seems to have gone off for a couple of years to build a couple of ferris wheels on the site...

I still have a theory that it will be EVA - the move in 2.4 to split out commander clothes to individual components could be pointing towards this. Of course they have flat out denied that EVA, along with atmospheric planets, is coming any time soon. However, there is precedence for them not being entirely up front - I recall before one the 2.x releases something Sandy had denied being in the release was included and he admitted it had been really hard to not be honest. I am sure we will know more in October.

I think if the expo doesn't bring anything of significance then I too will be flat out of hope and question the value of the value of the lifetime pass that was pushed so heavily.

Yep. Given there's still no cure for the beige plague in 2.4, my brain tells me the cure will be brought along with new planetary stuff

Though I'm sure there's a sub team already working on spaceleg, I don't think EVA will be next: planetary stuff would be "just" expansion of already implemented system(s) whereas EVA/spaceleg necessitate a whole lot of new systems/assets/UI/game logics.

I will have to crush your hopes on this one. It has nothing to do with EVA or atmospherics, they did it to increase their cosmetics offer (tbh they copied the idea from Scam Citizen which had a functioning store somewhere around the Engineers release :p).

The simplest explanation is usually the right one:
1) spent time developing planet coaster / console ports of elite
2) there is no dedicated "elite surface engine folks", they're cobra developers, or even users - and the core cobra engine is developed by another team entirely responding to feature requests from elite and planet coaster teams).
3) Ed Lewis mentioned a few times that the Elite team is he thinks "the biggest it ever was now".

My advice - brace for impact, and not a good one. I think we will hear about QoLs and new mechanics. There will be usual "pie in the sky" talk from Braben and maybe Sammarco, but "no etas, no guarantees". And of course THE THARGOIDS OMG THE THARGOIDS.

I would LOVE to be wrong about this, I really would. Because I will pick my vive headset (helmet?! imuurshionnn! :D) the moment EVA / atmospherics appear and go exploring! :D Sadly I am rather preparing to put away Elite for at least year or two knowing their official plans for not one but TWO new franchises by 2019 (so jurassic coaster (pardon, park) and something yet unannounced). We will see. Like I said I am willing to cut them some slack for the supposedly tough business decisions made during horizons. It's only waiting game is hard, and its been two frikkin years now. </vent>

Still waiting for 2.4

The Beta showed absolutely nothing worthy of a major release. How can anyone be even remotely "hyped" for what should have been added as basic patches to fix things that are simply terrible to start with?

Yeah, nothing to see in 2.4, nothing new, nope, seen it all before in '84 - move along, move along. #FAKERELEASE

presumably because of the things FD dont want us to see..... IF 2.4 was just what was released in beta i would kind of agree with you... but it isnt.

personally i do not want to be spoiled by seeing all the content which is meant to be actually discovered in the game once it goes live.
