What Happend to the Dream?

ED will be here until not much longer after SC goes gold, and I think FDev knows this. In fact I'm certain of it.

This may be true, but as I can't see Star Citizen arriving any time soon (possibly I could see it in 5 years time), I doubt FDev have anything to worry about on this. Not that i actually think it will be true. The scale of SC is tiny compared to ED. They are two very different types of game and I will likely play both at the same time. ED more so as it supports VR.

If you are talking about the scale of the map, yeah Elite is huge. But if your talking about the scale of the content and gameplay.... well Star Citizen has ambition and they point to a robust and complex gameplay instead of Elite simplistic vision.
Elite will be a console game for a casual couch gamer and SC will be a PC game for more demanding players.
Thats how I see it but I still hope Elite give us something to play, I've been waiting years for more complex gameplay.

The problem I find with SC is what they SAY is not what I have seen in game. So far SC is ime a bit of a jack of all trades. The FPS parts are generic, and the flight characteristics just not as fun as ED, far better suited to kB/m than the hotas game play promised. Ofcourse this is my subjective view and things can changed. No VR any time soon tho and that alone has me on the cusp of refund.
But if SC does it for you then cool :)

I suppose they mean that they "manage" systems, using the back ground simluation, gaining control of new star ports

If they do mean that, then they're deluded. Players cannot gain control of star ports in ED, except for UA bombing to cause a lockdown.

Time will tell. I don't see ED as that at all, but I really can't see SC coming out for at least another 3-5 years or so if it even comes out at all, and then at a much smaller scale then previously stated (they are now saying that there will only be a few star systems at launch instead of the 100 or so that was originally said). We have have no idea what ED will be like in 3-5 years or what SC will be like at launch.

I doubt that SC will be that much more demanding, it will just take a lot longer to do the same stuff we can currently do in ED.

Ambition is about the only thing SC has at the moment.

You missed the fact it also has has a huge amount of money, hundreds of people working on it, and a head who has the best track record in space games on anyone in the industry.

The dude has made one reasonably good game, botched another and made a whole bunch of broken promises about his latest one.

You obviously have not seen the Wing Commander movie or the giant mess that was made of Freelancer.

The faction they support/"role play along with" can gain new starports though.

That's what they will mean.

As opposed to what exactly? E.D. has nice graphics. That's it. It's awesome in VR. But planet jumping is the same day in, night out. Trading is the same, day in, night out.

And just because someone claims it's a '10 year' plan, means a grand total of zip. We're playing a beta product. Every add-on/update, fixes a few things and breaks even more. After the last update we had to wait nigh on 2 months to get back to playable network levels. We post bugs and get boilerplate responses. Nothing in this product is joined up. It's all bit'n'bobs bolted on. Add to that we have half- story we're forced to endure, that in itself, is a disjointed as the rest of the 'stuff'.

We had many many players, wrecking their heads on maths and audio trying to decipher signals and codes. And where are we now? The whole story has shifted from one of codes and exploring to, combat. It's like a bad screen play. But great graphics!

Let's not be all fanboyish about either game. They're different beasts. E.D. was aimed originally at casual 'make your way' in the universe. It's now turned into a pop-PvP vs the PvE players. SC on the other hand is aimed squarely at the flashy ships/combat crowd.

May SC deliver, please, Elvis. :)

Getting rid of the Hotel California would make Elite so much better.

Just about anyone who knows me would know Im no white knight fanboi...hell Im still on probation and they check everything before its visible. But I gotta say...this made me laugh out loudly so suddenly that a portion of my tea got sucked up my inner nostril...the drips coming out were half snot and half tea...

The bit I found hilarious was the bit about a head who the best track record in space games on anyone...I didnt know this personally...would be most intrigued on learning what some of his most notable achievements were.

As fer freelancer...most fun 2 years in gaming history playing that game...18 years later and I still cherish those memories. Damned shame what they did to that game...thankfully still survives to this day thanks to a few diehard fans ^

As regards the 10yr plan, we're approaching a third of the way through it... That alarms me at least. ie: If I use the last 3yrs to gauge the next 6-7, it doesn't give me a lot of hope.

Fingers crossed the next year does...

What happened to the dream ?

What always happens, you wake up and reality kicks back in.
Or perhaps, in this case, even the other way around, reality kicks back in, and you wake up.
And by "you" i mean both, player base and FD.

The fictional 10yr plan...

Frontier has told investors the estimated economic life of ED is eight years. We're about half way through that.

Basically already rich people demanding more money at the cost of features that the paying customers want. I really do hate shareholders....

Whats the problem in taking longer? If you need to do things, use mechanics, use equipment, use tools to do somethings it means you're "PLAYING".

Thats the problem with Elite right now!!! It takes time to do things but you're not doing anything meanwhile. You just waste time waiting for something automatic to finish. For example Supercruise, Hyperjump or "scaning". Its just dead time. You're not operating the ship, the amount of player interaction with the ship is basic. The game has been built around placeholders and these palceholders have been around since 3 years.

I cant wait for 2.4 to be released and forgotten as the rest of the updates so the next update addressing this issues can arrive. I've been waiting since the beta of 2014 for this. The game is just too simplistic. The simplicity of the game is perfect for a console yes, but what about the PC players?

So, again, whats the problem in things taking longer if you're actually doing something? I dont say SC will be the best game ever. Its just a different game, a game thats not supposed to be a screensaver. As you said time will tell.
