If you mean trying to cater to everyone, rather than picking a direction and sticking to it, I agree.
Is it a single player sandbox with a persistent play area and very limited multiplayer capability? Or is it an MMO?
To be honest, the way the netcode was designed answers this unequivocally, it's a sandbox with a few multiplayer elements. That's the direction it took at the start and for the sake of consistency at least, that's probably the direction it should head in. Introducing raiding MMO style, will probably mean most of the existing playerbase goes back to Freelancer or X3 (cos they're just not into that, unfortunately, but that's ok, it's not their fault), and then we have to wait til the MMO crowd gets wind that Elite is now an MMO and come, then they'll realise it was designed as a sandbox and cry for more MMO stuff, and we go full circle.
Thargoids will be a reskin of current mechanics with a few tricks and treats thrown in (the quality, scope and imagination of the tricks and treats is going ot determine Thargoid success or failure to the current playerbase I believe). Fleet actions will need new netcode
I must get round to reading all the elite fiction, I will soon.
