Thargoid combat will be Big Ships or Wings only?

I want raids. I want to hang around outside Galileo with a fat title on my commander name (Defender of the Galactic Peace or whatever), that shows I'm a hardcore raider. Not kidding, I'm narcissistic, cocky and a little insecure. I want it super hard, I want to have to try 20 times and discuss strategies with my generals, help my wingmates min-max for the encounter. Then I want to do it all again in IMPOSSIBLE (heroic) mode.

I think raids would be great for this game! People moan about lacking a good PvE challenge, yet they moan when the idea for them being implemented is brought up.

Oh right. What they actually want is for filthy casuals who play less than 20 hours a week to be sent back to Sidewinder by way of RNG-death.

I hope to God they don't bring in any form of 'raids' or 'raiding'.

This aint WoW.

We do not need more DPS meters and calls to 'lick johnny no dps' from the wing.

Indeed. But having thargoids being a cakewalk would kill the whole point of it.

There is a need for harder content in this game (i.e. up to content that would be hard for a full wing of Top-End engineered ships).
Best way to do it : thargoid encounters with diffculty goind from hard (eq grade 4 SS) to completly insane (grade 10 SS).
In every case, give the player a good to very good chance to bail out at the start of the encounter.
I someone stays and gets killed, well, it would be on them for not properly judjing the difficulty and/or coming unprepared.

I mean, it's called Elite Dangerous, not Noob Harmless lol.

Absolutely no problem with harder, much harder content. But in my decades of experience playing MMOs, it always ends up with a few min-max'rs dictating the rest to those who want to MinMax.

So, once we don't have DPS meters and all that rubbish, great!

Ah, the memories. But you're right, that would be no good. If it could be done in an Elite-y way, though? Proper fleet actions? Something I've been craving since Wing Commander.

The game's biggest flaw.

If you mean trying to cater to everyone, rather than picking a direction and sticking to it, I agree. :)

Is it a single player sandbox with a persistent play area and very limited multiplayer capability? Or is it an MMO?

To be honest, the way the netcode was designed answers this unequivocally, it's a sandbox with a few multiplayer elements. That's the direction it took at the start and for the sake of consistency at least, that's probably the direction it should head in. Introducing raiding MMO style, will probably mean most of the existing playerbase goes back to Freelancer or X3 (cos they're just not into that, unfortunately, but that's ok, it's not their fault), and then we have to wait til the MMO crowd gets wind that Elite is now an MMO and come, then they'll realise it was designed as a sandbox and cry for more MMO stuff, and we go full circle.

Thargoids will be a reskin of current mechanics with a few tricks and treats thrown in (the quality, scope and imagination of the tricks and treats is going ot determine Thargoid success or failure to the current playerbase I believe). Fleet actions will need new netcode

Yes.

See above

I must get round to reading all the elite fiction, I will soon. :)

Oh yeah, you have to give players the chance to bail. Above all else, we must avoid a situation where there is RNG auto-death.

As long as that is avoided, I really don't give a damn how Thargoids are handled.

I want them to be seriously scary, and will force commanders to either work together, or face them off in very powerful ships.

It will have to be the latter then, because if Thargoid content is multiplayer only I will ask my money back.
Because then, after multiplayer Wings, multiplayer crew and multiplayer CQC, this definitely is not the game I thought I was buying into 3 years ago.

Well, to be honest I won't be asking my money back, because ED already gave me a lot of gameplay fun and I like the devs, but it will definitely leave a very bad taste in my mouth and I won't be playing the game anymore because of that.

Having said that... I would be very shocked if the Thargoids turned out to be multiplay only.
