News Forum Downtime - Evening of Sept 25, into morning of the 26th

2 months: Design by Committee, Brett? Everyone wanted their say, so it had to be included somewhere?

I'm willing to give it a go, and I might get used to focusing on some of the thread titles that see regular traffic, but it means investing more mental energy, so it won't be a comfortable experience, I'm afraid.

If some forums turn out to be a barren wasteland (more so than previously), will consider the options.

Dangerous Discussion will still remain. :)

The dynamic view of "Unsubscribe/Subscribe to this thread" is turned off temporarily (today into tomorrow only) due to the impending 2.4 Thargoids release. It's a feature that is a bit resource intensive, especially when the forums get extremely busy. Unless I am missing something here?
Ah that's why, when I went to Unsubscribe from this thread, instead I had "Subscribe to thread". Had to go dig into my settings > subscriptions to take care of it (and will again after this post now).

If I'm understanding thirstyfish correctly, he's referring to this:

Normally after reading a thread and refreshing this page, it will be removed from the "Subscribed thread with new posts" section.

Brett,

Thanks for all the work you and the mods do here.

I'll be straight about my worry for the future.

Dangerous Discussion is subbed, 'Discuss anything relating to Elite Dangerous.'

However, I'm worried that it will be ruined by having loads of new threads zealously moved out into the sub-category forums.

This is a small community. If everything's going the way of sub-categories, it would be like asking 12 people to your house for a party and then dividing them amongst 8 rooms. Not much discussion, not much fun, not many people come to the next party.

Anyway, like I say, that's my concern. I hope it's groundless!

Cheers,

Truesilver

Think of those particular forums for use of longer lived threads. In DD, those threads would sometimes fall off the front page and simply get all discombobulated in the mix.

I don't believe the mods will make DD a barren waste land of Moved: Moved: Moved: Moved: Moved: Moved:. Well, so i would hope not that is. :p

Thanks Brett for such a swift and positive reply. I can certainly get behind the idea of threads starting life in Dangerous Discussion and if they become longstanding, in due course moving to a suitable sub-forum.

My concern was really over 'forced' moves in the first day or two, when a DD thread not only reaches a wider audience (including those who might appreciate it even though it falls outside their usual areas of interest) but also forms part of the community's daily "headlines" for topical discussion.

Galloping galaxies ... every single one of the above is one of mine! Thanks indeed @Martind, I'm glad you found them helpful.

With one (Engineering) exception they all began in DD. I hope that will still usually be possible as discussed with Brett above, because personally I just wouldn't have been motivated to put the work into them otherwise.

It'll take time to get used to the layout....first look on mobile and it is way confusing...but...time..

However, would have loved for the mobile theme to be adjusted. PLEASE let us have a rep button.

Edit: also...could you look at the bug on mobile that prevents you using the bottom page buttons if the last post on the current page has a spoiler? The page numbers at the top of the page still work but for the ones at the bottom, the spoiler seems to have shifted all the touch points around so you can't tap for next page.

My feedback on the changes:

Worlds of Elite - what is it for (there is no description)? Users are able to post at the top level i.e. not restricted to sub-forums, is that intentional? I don't see the point of introducing better organisation (sub-forums) if it's not enforced/encouraged. There are threads in here that would appear to suit the Elite Media sub-forum better i.e. Video, Audio, Art tags.

Lore, Roleplay, Events - does 'Events' refer to in-game events, out-of-game events or both? For example, threads related to Lavecon and BRC events have been moved to Elite Media, which I find odd.

Horizons - disappointed to see this still exists, I really don't see what value it adds.

Overall I think better use is needed of the forum descriptions i.e. the small text under the title, in order to better guide newcomers (I admit that a lot of people probably don't look at them but anyway...)

Apart from the above I like the changes.
