Thargoids are invincible god ships for now?

You do realize guys how dull you sound with all juicy Thargoids action going around?

God like NPCs? What about Engineered players? LOL.

Just leave.

For the moment you can do three things.

Observe them
Gather information via research drones
Take part in community goals to help develop technology.

We have seen that these guys can take down entire battle groups. No one should have expected players coming to do any better.

At the moment.

I like it that there’s a Cannot Handle threat. The galaxy is now an (in game realityj more frightening place in which we are powerless.

I’m planning on running with it. Incorporating it into my gameplay. Dust down the Asp, Hull tank the crap out of it and go hrlp out with research.

Have some fun immersing myself in the game reality.

Our time will come.

I can't believe what I'm seeing here. For weeks the forum has been full of "give us a challenge" and "they'll be weak"... And now they are godlike?
Stop being carebears!

I'm not seeing any serious committed attempts to gang up and see if human DPS is capable of overcoming the regeneration rate.

Sure we can't take them one on one currently, but if it bleeds we can kill it.

Anyone got any links to videos of multiple commanders hitting the same Thargoid at the same time?

I saw a live stream of CMDR Pater(?) with 4 other laying waste to a Thargoid ship for over an hour. He eventually jumped into the turrets of another ship which allows you to see the Thargoids health. It constantly flicked between 99%/and 100%.

It was suggested, but not experimented, that lasors may heal the Thargoids as some sort of photosynthesis.

FYI pack hounds get reflected from Thargoid ships, not sure about other dumbfire weapons

Invincible ships? Read Galnet?

Really?

That's... pathetic, really. Wow. This update seems terrible.

its not for ever however and from a story point of view makes sense. if you took an Abrams tank to the Battle of the Alamo i would suggest to all intents and purposes it would be invincible.

this is a new technology from a new race and i can buy that our weapons would be completely useless against them. The interesting balancing thing would be if the new anti thargoid weapons will end up being practically useless against humans. So do we become ultimate thargoid slayers, or human killers or balance somewhere in the middle as a jack of all trades.

I hope FD dont just increase the damage accross the board.

I like the fact that we have to read about the events of the galaxy from a news site - it mirrors reality and shows is how small we really are.

Idiotic mechanics requiring specialist weapons? Check.

Pvp crowd owns the new Thargoids in a day. New content so blah!

And don't pretend that scraping barnacles is good gameplay either. What a desperate disappointment.

Wait, weren't you the same person who a few days ago complained that the pvp crowd couldn't harm them? [haha]

seems you missed the point by a wide margin. My complaint had nothing to do with whether they are killable or not. It's to do with the extraordinary lack of brainpower applied to their design. This is lazy mechanics at their worst. It's something you'd expect out of a 2d arcade game.

Okay:
I expected better. Invincibility is lazy.

Can you explain what wouldn't be lazy and terrible in your opinion? Without just slinging random insults at devs?

Not random at all and if you look at my overal post history I am far from a hater of this game.
I think it's terrible because it is a mechanic borrowed (to use the more polite term) from late 80's console and arcade bossfights and I really did expect more.

To give a longer answer,
I think the concept as explained; that they are alien, that conventional weapons are less effective against them (or even in some instances entirely ineffective), that they have unknown motivations etc etc is all great. My issue is with the execution of this.
To give another example where I feel FDev stuffed up in very similar fashion, all you have to do is see the mechanics around skimmers. Instead of coming up with an intelligent in game solution to why it isn't simply better to ram them to death, FDev made them strangely deadly on rams. Not only does it not make any in game sense, it punishes the creativity of players who like to find unexpected in game ways of interacting with the environment. Instead of adding to the game, they blanket shut ways of proceeding which run counter to how they've imagined it. So, in order to keep SRVs useful, they didn't add to the SRV mechanics or potential, they simply shut down other avenues of achieving goals.
This is happening here all over again. Instead of finding ways to make the Thargoids interesting and encouraging players to be creative with the tools at hand, they simply close off other avenues of approach and create a "bossfight" mechanic. IMO this is lazy and that's why I called it so.

Plenty of praise I've given to FD for things they've done right, but I don't see the point in prefacing every criticism with them.

I know, you sound way bitter compared with normal. So I know you dont like it, think its lazy, stupid, terrible and you expect more. But what did you expect? Because before launch all I heared (from the community at large, not you!) is the fear 'it would be re-skinned CGs' where cmdrs would 'grind dozens of thargoids'. That is far, far from what is happening. I killed my first Thargoid today. I was in a wing with two french PvP players, and there were 4-5 other cmdrs helping. It took about 20 minutes or so, with people going back to station to reload and all. It was massive fight and far more interesting than anything I've seen in ED so far. Certainly far more interesting than PvP, which is just shield-tanking until someone runs out of SCB. So I am just not getting why you are so incredibly negative about it, I'd have thought you'd find this great fun.

I edited above for a more in depth answer.

But that is just you giving examples of what you don't like. All I am asking is what you did expect. What, in your opinion, would be good design, that is not lazy, not terrible, and not stupid and so on? I see why you consider it a boss-fight (it essentially is), and I can understand not liking it (I generally dont, I prefer sneaking around in games like deus-ex and go for the non-lethal approach) but I am not sure what it is you expected here for the combat cmdrs to do that is better and more exciting fun than what we have. Picth your idea, who knows who is listening. :)

I expected mechanics that work within the rules of the in game universe. That's why I provided the example of the skimmers and the SRVs. It wasn't just another random criticism, it was a rather specific criticism.
There is a wide number of ways it could have been approached and I don't have the roadmap for their full vision of the Thargoids so sugesting any one would be near pointless. As with everything, I just wish they'd keep it consistent within the laws of the in game fantasy universe and that's not what they're doing here or in the other example.

Which rules of the game universe are the current mechanics inconsistent with?

That didn't take long.

"DEAR FRONTIER WHY AM I NOT AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN I SHALL WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR."

What did people expect? More of the same AI? How does a trivial foe that is expunged, day one, give us any reason to do anything, at all? Why even bother? Frontier are showing are illustrating that we are, ostensibly, currently on the back foot. It's day one. They didn't put an extremely potent foe 300 LY out of the bubble for kicks.

Be reasonable.

There is a difference between them being extremely tough foes with ships that can take a ridiculous amount of damage, turn on a dime, etc, and them being just straight up invincible. No point in me upgrading my weapons now if they are rendered useless and the next update will bring new kinds of weapons.
