Atmospheric Worlds. A Start?

Cosmo have you watched the 3.0 livestream and presentation? It exists only as a fragment not connected to the game to show of, its scripted to be used only at this very one gamescom, there is no indication anything like that will land on our HD any time soon. Smoke and mirrors. Their engine cant handle this sort of scale at the moment. Please dont bring SC "planetary tech" as a example of existing game play as it exists only as a gamescom presentation.

SC isn't released yet, but they showed that it's possible on current high-end PCs.

Another example is Space Engine which has a more accurate and detailed simulation of the Milky Way imo. Atmospheric planets have been done before and it would work on medium to high end PCs.

Another example is Outerra which has procedural Earth-like worlds. This video shows a 1:1 scale planet Earth.

Of course it can be done, as you already mentioned others have already done it, just don't place SC in that basket. :D

Now thats more like it! I agree, I have both SE and Outerra. SE has really great terrain generation and 100% seamless transition from space to surface. Actually it looks much better than Elite planets at this point.

I just found this and wanted to share:
Procedurally generated clouds (to fly through) & weather effects ...

Beautiful! :)

It is apparently possible on current computers.

And if it is possible, it can (and will) be done by FDev ...

Do I have to stress, how much I am looking forward to it?

Another case of how it can be done. This engine is also use for dual universe.

Now add the need for networking, highly detailed ships and CMDR's, various kinds of weapons and their effects (particles).
Smoke.
Fire (because oxygen and what not).
And the need to design it for a multitude of different PC setups, not to mention the consoles.

Don't we need something like the prodecurally-generated cities?

Lets just start with few rocks and trees and maybe a river shall we? ;) Well, I dont have any examples of massive cities PG but looking at few city builders games that I own, big city like to eats your FPS quite fast. Also, no idea how FD would pull full grown city with moving cars and flying ships right now. What could be done is limited POI system for populated areas, I would be fine with it to be honest.

In other words would you rather have a basic something now or wait for the bigger everything later?

We still have several of the "placeholders" we got during Beta/Gamma in 2014.

I would prefer those get replaced first instead of getting even more placeholders which might stay in the game for years and make it more difficult to introduce the real content later on without breaking anything.

That's exactly it, IMO.

Sure, all the clever stuff would be nice but it's not necessary.
Hell, leave the planets entirely alone if you have to.
Just figure out the fundamentals, like how to generate a "sky", atmospheric effects, and what the physics is going to do differently and then bung it in the game.

It can all be refined and built on afterwards.

i was just stumbling around You Tube and was looking at some of the planet coaster vids and i got to thinking...

Would you be happy with (just as a start) frontier making earth like worlds that we could land on with the basic starting backdrop from planet coaster?

No no no no, haven't you learned by now that if FD ever puts something in the game as a placeholder it will stay as a placeholder forever....[blah]

If they focused more on getting me out of my seat rather than atmospheric planets the games appeal would bounce up. We want the Russian doll feel station to ship to srv to walking around with a little scanner looking for microbes or shooting aliens (if thats your thing) let me order a coffee in a cafe and ill love you more

I'd be happy with a sci-fi flavoured take on the Auto-Gen cities from the Microsoft Flight Sim series.

I don't expect it to ever happen now though - the SRV probably killed cities on atmos. worlds. People would expect to drive round stuff. :D

Would you be happy with (just as a start) frontier making earth like worlds that we could land on with the basic starting backdrop from planet coaster? forget the effects of atmosphere on the hull entry and all the physics and details just basic trees, green fields blue sky etc & the ability to knock around in an SRV with the knowledge that the detail would follow.

I'm not going to say it would be easy for them because i don't know what exactly would be involved, maybe impossible but they do already have that infrastructure and knowledge in place

In other words would you rather have a basic something now or wait for the bigger everything later?

Just thinking

Reading between the lines I get the distinct impression atmospheric planets will never happen.

As a space-ship themed game I'd rather FDev focus on space ship things first before trying to take on something they'll likely never succeed at. Seems like they recognize the challenge of atmospheric planets being out of their reach.

There's so much more that could be done in space with new assets and mechanics.
