I believe the 5K uses an OLED screen.
That is on the demostration models. They have confirmed on the Kickstater site that it will be the CLCP display:

But you will be able to adjust the brightness of the image.

The thing that worried me in the review posted earlier was all that stretching of the edges of the picture to fill the wide field of view - did you notice that?

I would not be backing the 5k in that case.
Did the 5k in the SF demo have OLED screens?
Thanks for the write up, sounds impressive. I have to wonder why Fruit Ninja is the demo of choice though and not something with a little more meat on its bones....

I am thinking of upping my pledge to get the 8k. I have only pledged to the 5k at the moment.

When I see this, I guess the reason is due to 3 things.
1. It requires less GPU. We now know that the 5K and 8k require the same spec GPU due to upscaling in the 8k headset (same feeds etc), so this is not a valid reason.
2. OLED screens. This is something that interest me in the 5k, as you pointed out this is not the case and not a valid reason.
3. Cost. This is for the individual to decide.
Maybe this helps? If cost is not a consideration, go for 8k.
I'm a backer for the 5k but also leaning towards 8k as well. My use case for VR on my PC is pretty much one game ... Fruit Ninja .. wait .. no... Elite!!
So my ultimate choice will be driven by that.
btw, my 'Room-Scale' VR gaming is all PSVR -- I don't want to put a PC in my living room - now that *might* change if they can get the wireless stuff working with this.
Honestly, which ever unit you end up going for, I don't think you'll be disappointed. the real game changer here is the 200 degree FOV, and you get that with both models. I can't stress how much difference this made when compared to what I am currently used to.
Well I got to try the 8k unit last night in San Francisco and I left the demo feeling very impressed and not concerned at all about my investment in the kickstarter.
This truly feels like a next-gen headset.
I have to say the 200 degree's FOV is absolutely a game changer. It's really on a whole different level to anything I've used (Oculus/PSVR and even the Pimax BE) the sense of presence you feel with those extra degree's is amazing. I got to play Fruit Ninja and also Big Screen desktop.
The clarity of the display was sharper than my samurai sword I was wielding in Fruit Ninja, and fluid as anything. I could not perceive SDE or god rays when using it. The Brightness of the 8k unit was really good (for me) I think the 5k one was slightly darker, but had a 'blacker' black - which is probably due to it using an OLED panel in the 5k - this might be better for Elite, given that it's a very 'black' game - but I think that will come down to personal preference.
I am already used to having a high resolution headset anyway (when compared to Rift/Vive) but take that, and add those extra degree's FOV and you get an idea of what it's like. In fact, someone likened it going from 4:3 to Widescreen Televisions - it's *that* dramatic.
Everyone else there was similarly impressed with the unit. The only real concerns shown were with the hand controllers, which obviously won't be an issue at all for Elite. (The design of the controllers is not yet finalized from what I gather and subject to change)
The screen/lens combo is so far ahead of the current Oculus and Vive it's ridiculous...
Notes about demo :The demo was running on a gaming laptop with a 1080 and did have some framerate issues on the Pimax 8k for me.
- Great FOV Increase -I was able to actually move my eyes! I know that sounds very strange written, or said out loud; but you can actually look to your left and right, this was most noticeable on TheBlu.. The difference in Immersion is there for me!
- Resolution is great, a huge improvement even with the much larger FOV I was able to read text in the steamVR menu with ease, I only had a chance to check that out for a moment, but game menus seemed much crisper overall.
- Headset was surprisingly light for the size of it ; I fully expected a lot more weight, but it feels good and does not feel "Cheap" in any way, it's very well balanced and feels good on your head, even with the non production strap I used.
- Ease of use: The HMD works as easily as a vive or rift would, it appears they are using steamVR for demoing and it launched right away with no modification, they did clarify with me they are not using any kind of "stretching" for the FOV, and the FOV on TheBlu felt correct.

I love it....
better than I could expect.
