PiMAX 8K VR

So, I am tempted to back this 8K project. Anyone else done it here?

I've backed the early bird 8K package and will remain backed, based on the current demo - there are too many positives ahead of my CV1 to warrant backing out.

I'm not worried about the upscaling, as the aspect ratio should be the same between source (PC output) and output (HMD screens) and the GPU is not really there yet to drive native "8K" GPU to "8K" HMD yet. In any case PiMAX have stated they will do an upgrade kit from 8K to 8K X in the future.

Given the posts in the threads NMS has quoted are largely negative because of one individual, who doesn't seem to understand engineering compromises and that the Tested channel, who initiated most of the "warping" controversy are not what I'd call an impartial source, I'd take the current internet "group think" with a grain of salt.

I can't see it surviving. Its GPU requirements are way too high.

Maybe the company will be taken over and its technology used in the buyer's headset.

From my understanding, the GPU requirement is only too high for the 8K x model. For the normal 8K model the present high-end cards like the GTX1080 should handle it well. This is because apparantly the game will still be rendering out in the normal resolution of 2160x1200 but the PIMAX will be upscaling (supersampling) to the "8k". Bonus benefit is that this upscaling is done thru hardware and not thru software like we are doing today using tools like oculusdebugtool, hence saving actual GPU processing.
So personnally I definitely see huge potential with this innovative small company compared to the big cheeses who innovate VERY slowly!

From the stuff I've been reading I'm not too impressed with the stretching thing, which won't improve until game developers expand the VR FOV so that it is native. I personally think that Pimax has attempted too much, too far with this. I hope I'm wrong but time will tell.

When I'm not playing on my Pimax BE headset, I am playing on a Viotek 34" 21:9 curved screen (Massdrop is awesome!!) That also has some warping at the edges of the display. It does not bother me that much to be honest, as most of the time I have my eyes forward. I would imagine the effect is going to be somewhat similar on the Pimax - I'm on the kickstarter for the 5k unit.

I am trying to get up to the city (San Fran) tonight to check out the new headset --hopefully I can make it.

The stretching is apparantly only on the peripheral sides(not affecting the direct front view). Human vision sucks on the sides anyways so I'm sure the added immersion benefit from the added FOV will outweigh that stretching. We will find out soon enough if it's the case. Personnally I'm excited for this!

Very good to hear that. I hope you can go and give us a review on FOV, how much the resolution is superior to your 4K BE, SDE and brightness. If I'm not asking for too much. And preferably test with some game other than the fruit ninja.:D

Ummmnnn... I don't have one... :|

I've seen this mentioned by too many reviews that I won't brush it off. They are pretty aggressive with their updating so, like I said, time will tell.

Well I got to try the 8k unit last night in San Francisco and I left the demo feeling very impressed and not concerned at all about my investment in the kickstarter.

This truly feels like a next-gen headset.

I have to say the 200 degree's FOV is absolutely a game changer. It's really on a whole different level to anything I've used (Oculus/PSVR and even the Pimax BE) the sense of presence you feel with those extra degree's is amazing. I got to play Fruit Ninja and also Big Screen desktop.

The clarity of the display was sharper than my samurai sword I was wielding in Fruit Ninja, and fluid as anything. I could not perceive SDE or god rays when using it. The Brightness of the 8k unit was really good (for me) I think the 5k one was slightly darker, but had a 'blacker' black - which is probably due to it using an OLED panel in the 5k - this might be better for Elite, given that it's a very 'black' game - but I think that will come down to personal preference.

I am already used to having a high resolution headset anyway (when compared to Rift/Vive) but take that, and add those extra degree's FOV and you get an idea of what it's like. In fact, someone likened it going from 4:3 to Widescreen Televisions - it's *that* dramatic.

Everyone else there was similarly impressed with the unit. The only real concerns shown were with the hand controllers, which obviously won't be an issue at all for Elite. (The design of the controllers is not yet finalized from what I gather and subject to change)

Thanks for sharing your experience.
Did you find out the specs of the laptop they run the demo on?

Thanks for the write up, sounds impressive. I have to wonder why Fruit Ninja is the demo of choice though and not something with a little more meat on its bones....

How was the SDE on the 5K model. That is the one I am going for, but I may up my bid for the 8k.

So, you would actually prefer the 5k model with elite even though it has lower res?
Greys that should be black is disatrous in a game like elite.

This is actually a very good point - Elite is my go-to game for VR bar none, so if space doesnt' look at least as good as it does on the Vive I will give it a miss. I don't think I will keep my reservation if by the end of the Kickstarter nobody had a chance to try Elite on it.

From my understanding, the 5K model will have the same type of screen as the 8k, a CLCP screen with less resolution.
