FX 17 Feedback

Ha! Doom Bar! I have an off sales in Cornwall, it’s the only ‘local’ brewery I won’t stock! Cask stuff still made in Cornwall, bottles and keg from Burton courtesy of their owners Molson Coors! Hope the FD lot do something better organised next time, I expected to have spent up a great deal of cash but there was very little on the marketing front.

It's a London venue, you're lucky to get anything better than John Smiths (in cans no less) at those (and hotels). At least Doom Bar actually has a flavour. ;)

My feedback FWIW:

I had an AWESOME day. My partner was looking forward to the Jurassic World announcement and he was not disappointed. He may also now be an ED convert...

My points:

1) As others have said, the catering was woeful. Not just the pricing, but the staff didn't seem to know how to use their tills sometimes.
2) We purchased Founders Early Bird Passes. Aside from a coin saying Founder, we didn't really see any benefit. There was no separate queue for entry, meaning despite arriving an hour before (at 9am) we didn't get the 10am early access. Venue staff didn't seem to have a clue in this regard.
3) I noticed that the non-Founders got their goodybag in a re-usable cloth back, whereas Founders got their goodybag in a glossy paper/card bag.
4) There were no drinks tokens in the Founders goodybag, basically because someone at the venue had forgotten to put them in. Cue more chaos after the 5pm reveal talk and before the party.
5) It was awesome meeting some of the Devs who were just so nice and approachable. I spoke to one who had worked on the Thargoids, and another who had worked on other projects.
6) I spent a good chunk of the day playing the original Elite on the BBC Micro which was awesome.
7) The venue staff didn't seem to know about the Founder seating at the intro talk and at another talk I was at;
8) The security staff were a bunch of grumpy sods frankly. I walked in to the area for the main talk where all the ED and PC gaming machines were, to be told there was no entry and that I had to go down a different parallel corridor leading to exactly the same place.... go figure. Another time I asked another security guard for directions and his response was "no idea mate" and he walked off. Charming.
9) The catering was awful and seriously overpriced (I know I have said this above but it is worthy of being mentioned twice).
10) Some seating which wasn't a hard bench might have been nice.

Overall, because it was Frontier Expo and because I love Frontier Developments and ED I had a great day. I'll be back next year but hopefully at a different venue with better venue staff, better security and better catering.

That is all.

Hello, Mr Icus. :)

[...] the staff didn't seem to know how to use their tills sometimes.

I wasn't going to say more about it, but since you raise the point...

I'm in catering. I know exactly what trained, experienced staff look like. A few seemed to know their business, but most moved like they'd never seen a till or held a pair of tongs before. I'm quite certain that whoever's in charge of them has basically no idea what they're doing.

I'm not a lawyer, but everyone in the industry is required to know the many legally-binding rules for any business serving food to the public. These include Scores on the Doors, visible allergen notices and all sorts. It's not enough to be sanitary, you have to have a bunch of notices for the public.

It was a busy day for me, so I confess I may have missed them, but did anyone see those things? None are visible on the livestreams I've looked at. I don't think there are any exceptions for exhibition centres. If they're not following the minimum policies required to pass EHO inspection, then it's only a matter of time before Newham Council jumps up and down on them.

I spent a good chunk of the day playing the original Elite on the BBC Micro which was awesome.

Not to be unkind to you, big man, but YES, WE NOTICED. I'm very glad you had a good time on it, though. It was and is a Great Game. :D

Additional suggestion for next year, FD: more original BBC Micros. :)

Now I've finally managed to sober up....

Had a great day and night with everyone, always fun to see peoples reaction when they realise who I am and instablame me for anything they can think of.

Great fun, great people, great updates and info.

I genuinly love attending Frontier events even if it's just an excuse to drink to excess,

The look on poor BrettC's face when we finally met after 10 years of knowing each other here on the forum was priceless to say the least.

I saw a few bottles of Doom Bar floating around, but they'd ran out almost immediately.

Must have. When I got to the bar and asked what ales they had, I was offered Becks as the only beer... Still, I did manage to get a double whisky out of the server before he realised that they weren't allowed to make doubles. :) Was only charged for a single, but it was still £9!! (And I didn't get my Founders drink either as they didn't bother announcing it)

Yep, guilty as charged!

Was actually wondering if FD would let me have the original game on emulators on a few laptops at next year's Expo... It would be good for nostalgia and I could show folk who have never played it how it's done :)

I can take 2 Beebs, more amigas, a few speccies and several STs - although it'll require a road trip of epic drinking proportions!

All of our road trips include epic drinking proportions.... ALL OF THEM!!!

I've got an Acorn Electron (with 3.5" hard drive!) and a couple of beebs (though only one works, other is for spares). Along with an Amiga, ST, loads of consoles, and games. :) Also have ZX81 and Spectrum.

So, now this thread has turned into "What old crap is in your loft?", what else can we find? :D
