Woes of the Elite Dangerous VR Commander

I would like GalNet to be updated with more information and more frequently. The only tool i would like to be in game is a notepad and the ability to copy and paste from news, GalNet and to copy system names from the maps. A little file sorter, like we have in the comms menue and i would be happy.
I never use tools and websites while playing, not because i have to take the headset off to use them, but because i dont need them. Checking trade info from the galactic map and such things can all be done without external tools. The notepad to keep some things in memory and a frequently updated GalNet would really complete the experience for me.

Is that set in stone or can FD change that should they want to. Does it mean a 8 core processor for eg would work way better than a 4 core of the same speed

Yes, that is until they actually support DX12. I am unsure if they are yet but it doesnt act like it.

Here are my Voice Attack commands to switch between ED and BigScreenBeta...

So my 15 4590 could be slowing my system down in vr and the new i5 8600 could make quite a difference?

Well any upgrade will help your processing. However I am not sure between those 2 chips. I know you can OC the 4590 a decent amount. Is it the 4590K? It also depends on your MOBO and what chipeset you want to back. KBLake or the new one that Intel created and no one will use.

The only way you will notice a big boost is if you move to the i7 series with threaded cores. Other than that, everyone else has to wait on DX12

... I only have 8 GB of RAM for the Mobo and 11gb on my card. For some reason ED defaults to doing calculations that should be done on the GPU through the processor, So it uses the smaller amount of RAM to hold that data.

For your reference, the 8GB of RAM main memory on your motherboard holds Windows, all the programs to make your hardware actually work, and then any application programs you are running. The basic part of ED will be running in main RAM.

The 11GB on your video card is just holding the 3D data, textures and shader programs needed by a game (say ED etc). They're not interchangeable. The video RAM can't be used for holding extra programs etc. The base part of ED calls on the video shaders and video card hardware itself to render the game far faster than just the cpu and main RAM could ever achieve.

However, the part of ED running in main RAM is critical. Its holding the main game loop, keeping track of all objects, all the complex geometry and all the different asset positions (ships, planets, orbits, your motion, all incoming and outgoing data between you and the ED server). It handles your control inputs, sound and loading items into main RAM just inces its needed by the video card. Its the main controller.
Meanwhile, the video card portions of ED are geared for pure speed. Its holding textures, bump maps, lighting routines, and the actual ship meshes/shapes in its own fast RAM. Its task - render those millions of pixels without having to worry about lost packets in the network stack, or which sound to play at what stereo position. The cpu and main RAM is fast enough and more than capable. The cpu/main part of ED in RAM just hands off all the video stuff to the graphics card.

Edit: sorry if you knew all that, it just seemed not from the quote :)

That said, I got by just using the nose gap in my Rift for peering at my second monitor for additional game-related data. Or Discord etc.

I just don't want to use them - takes the fun out of finding things for yourself (except coriolis.io for ship builds). It would be nice to have something like a starport services screen accessible while out is space, with various tabs and ways to highlight things for future reference. Basically, I mainly need something for tracking commodity prices. I used to use notebooks and a pencil (and eraser), but that is not good for VR. I got bigscreen set up and working, but I still just don't play anymore. Maybe some of those 2018 QOL updates will bet be back into the game.

Yeah it sounds like Frontier is going to put some better trade data into the game which should really help us VR cmdrs. I'm looking forward to 2018!

I wouldn't be too excited about Dash. It seems well suited for touch controllers, and some feeling in my tummy tells me that you probably need! touch or xbox controller. The question then is, whay is more annoying? Taking off the Rift for viewing the Desktop or taking off the Rift for grabbing and setting up your controllers.

Ermmm - just leave your Touch controllers somewhere easy enough to grab without taking your headset off. I've already had ideas about mounting them on either side of the back rest of my chair for easy access and stowing. Just a matter of reaching behind my shoulders to grab them or put them back... simple.

I fail to understand your need to remove the hmd.

Dash looks fine, im on vive and using the steam desktop which works great for looking stuff up while playing, the keyboard sits between the hotas and the mouse to the right of the stick.

You quickly learn where you put things if you are consistent, i keep whatever im drinking forward and right of my mouse pad and havnt spilled it in over 500 hours of elite in vr.

I just tried to setup BigScreen Beta and integrated it with VoiceAttack, just as was proposed on this thread. Works like a charm, actually.

I do hope Dash will support the Oculus Remote for peasants like me that do not have the Touch controllers :)

I do kind of doubt that the remote will work since the promo says "designed for touch" unless they do a gaze based interface as well.

In the dk2 days you could run multiple vr apps and just switch between without all that voice attack finangling, some stuff was better :p
