Upgrading the rig for ED Beyond exploration

I can't find the tech related section in the forums, but I'm more interested in the opinion of the explorer community anyway.

I promised myself to improve my rig since a while, and the FX announcements were a great 'catalyst' to actually take steps.

So I've had an oldish PC I bought as used, as I had no intentions to run top-tier games on it. Then Elite came along on Steam, out of the blue...
Right about when DW fleet arrived at Beagle Point, I upgraded the basic setup (that came with an i3 and 8gb ram) with new drives (one SSD, and another HDD), nem monitor and a new GTX960 4gb. This obviously had a huge impact on the experience with most settings on ultra, but there is still ample room for improvement in terms of drawing distance and smoothness - and I recon Elite will get more demanding, especially when multiple light sources are introduced.

Therefore I decided to leave the MSI GTX960 4gb and the drives in their place, but pretty much A-grade :) everything else, and just placed an order for the following items, that were part of a recommended setup:
- i7 7700K with a Be quiet! Pure Rock BK009 CPU cooler
- Ripjaws 2x8GB DDR4 3000Mhz RAM
- MSI Z270 A-Pro motherboard
- FSP 600W power supply
- A matching goodish new case

I know an i7 is an overkill for the GTX960, but I'm planning to buy something in a year that at least matches an 1080 in terms of performance.

Having said that, I used to be a console gamer and I'm not too well informed in these stuff, so I hope I didn't make a mistake with the purchase. :)

To answer your almost, but not quite questions...looks like you have a fine rig planned out there!

There are newer processors from both Intel and AMD, but given gaming progress over the past several years, and not really seeing anything changing it any time soon, the i5 2500k processor is still a perfectly acceptable CPU for virtually all gaming scenarios. So the 7700k setup you are getting will be more than fine from the CPU side for a long time to come.

An i7 7700k sounds quite fine to me. It's what I'm running currently as well.

While I'm playing on VR, so my experience is slightly different than for 2D monitors, I did find some fairly significant performance gains when I upgraded from a GTX 970 to a 1070, and then again to a 1080ti. Each of those leaps were similar in how much it improved my performance, and how far I could tweak the settings higher. To me, the 1080ti is the sweet spot for VR right now, but the 1070 is probably great for playing on a regular monitor, unless you want to run it at 4k resolution, in which case the 1080ti probably still reigns supreme.

I'm aware that I'll be tempted for an upgrade. :)

If I'll stay on regular monitor with powerful GPU combo, I guess there are ways to tweak the settings, perhaps with tinkering the config files to boost detailed drawing distance. I guess shadows are eating up a lot of the processing power.

You guys reckon my 960 4GB & i5 4690 should be good for 2018? Currently running the game on high preset @60fps.

Depends on how they implement things. The CPU should be solid for a good long while regardless, but it wouldn't hurt to start saving up for a video card.

Yeah what I'm thinking. Should be able to afford a 1060 6GB at the year's end.

As per OP, I think/hope that upgrading the 'rest' will smooth things out for me, and I'll target the Q4 update for upgrading the GPU.
Having said that, if Q1 turns out to be much more and performance will suffer, I'll need to get gud in marriage management and somehow get a GPU upgrade approved by my wife. :)

Lucky for me I play in Solo mode.
