I can't find the tech related section in the forums, but I'm more interested in the opinion of the explorer community anyway.
I promised myself to improve my rig since a while, and the FX announcements were a great 'catalyst' to actually take steps.
So I've had an oldish PC I bought as used, as I had no intentions to run top-tier games on it. Then Elite came along on Steam, out of the blue...
Right about when DW fleet arrived at Beagle Point, I upgraded the basic setup (that came with an i3 and 8gb ram) with new drives (one SSD, and another HDD), nem monitor and a new GTX960 4gb. This obviously had a huge impact on the experience with most settings on ultra, but there is still ample room for improvement in terms of drawing distance and smoothness - and I recon Elite will get more demanding, especially when multiple light sources are introduced.
Therefore I decided to leave the MSI GTX960 4gb and the drives in their place, but pretty much A-grade
everything else, and just placed an order for the following items, that were part of a recommended setup:
- i7 7700K with a Be quiet! Pure Rock BK009 CPU cooler
- Ripjaws 2x8GB DDR4 3000Mhz RAM
- MSI Z270 A-Pro motherboard
- FSP 600W power supply
- A matching goodish new case
I know an i7 is an overkill for the GTX960, but I'm planning to buy something in a year that at least matches an 1080 in terms of performance.
Having said that, I used to be a console gamer and I'm not too well informed in these stuff, so I hope I didn't make a mistake with the purchase.
