PSA: Not sure if anyone spotted this but a dev has confirmed there will be paid content as well as the free stuff...

Yes, I'm confused why there wasn't another parallel arrow/line on the road map diagram, simply with "Payable DLC content/date TBC".

As regards it being "cosmetic", surely that doesn't hold up in the sense it's payable so surely should be significant enough to merit that. And Zac himself says, "will be getting their hands on premium content as part of their lifetime expansion pass before the end of 2018"...

This to me seems to imply a sizable development is underway for other significant conent other than "Beyond"...
Could be atmospheric planets? It's the only thing that comes to mind that could be ready "soon"TM and be a feature that sells well in its own right without interferring with/gating any of the Beyond content.

I think they thought people would be more happy that they get stuff for free rather than having to pay for stuff. That's the experience they made with the Horizons announcement. They didn't expect the community to be that toxic.
If you're going that route you should probably take it up with the thread populated by LEP owners raising a bit of a stink ever since Beyond was anounced as "free". That is what forced Zac to make his anouncement after all. Outside of the negative Nellies, who never seem to be happy, everybody else was pretty much pleased with Beyond being free for Horizons owners.

I dunno why people would be getting concerned about this TBH.

It'd be nuts to think that FDev plan to just keep on providing free content for ED indefinitely.
They're a business. They need to do stuff to earn an income.

As far as I can see, there's only 2 possible scenarios which might be at play here:-
1) "Beyond" is an opportunity for FDev to "coast" for a year, tidy up various facets of ED, spend time focusing their attention on dinosaurs and prepare content for 2019.
2) FDev are winding down their commitment to ED permanently.

If its #1 then LEP owners have nothing to worry about.
If it's #2, LEP owners are SOL, as are we all.

The only remaining issue being whether people will consider it worthwhile to spend money on cosmetic items for a game that might be heading for the end of it's life.
On that issue, I'd suggest that we know for certain, that ED will retain some level of support for at least another year so it'd be wise to base any buying decisions on that time-frame, alone.

What's confusing here I don't understand?

Devs didn't want to reveal that info, they wanted to concentrate on free stuff you will get.

What's so hard to understand about that?
Well it's confusing as to why FD didn't just lay it all out on the table when they talked about their road map. It is pretty easy to just have added,

"There is also something we are working on that we cannot reveal details on yet that will be premium content available for purchase. This premium content will be available before the end of 2018. As always, no ETAs no guarrantees. We will release more info later on after the launch of Beyond."

Because this community was whining for months about how FD should stop saying precisely that. So they only discussed stuff they had something to say about. So LEP guys freaked out. FD gives them an assurance. Now others freak out. Jeez...

If they weren't ready to say it at the expo why say it now, I mean they weren't ready and didn't have details then. they don't have, (or are unwilling to share), the details now so why the drip feed approach?

I'm fine with it, (I think, who knows), but it is frankly a bizarre method of communication.

Lord Braben told us Elite would have a long life. Just recently.

If 2) becomes real he would be called a liar afterwards which is not something you want to experience after joining the order.

As sleutelbos pointed out this is exactly what community hates when FD does. It is obvious that 'premium' content is still cooking, still decided upon content (it is a 1. year. ahead), that's why they don't want to reveal anything about it yet. And I start to think Zac would have been more cynical, he wouldn't have posted that. Because it add nothing for people being confused because they are confused by their own choice.

Why they even care what's coming in 1 year's time? Have FD done something so wrong so people would trust them so little?

Or it is just them being them....which is fine I suppose. Sometimes you just don't know and it is FINE. It is just a game. Wait for surprises. Don't get spoiled. Enjoy what you got already in your PC.

It is not bizarre. People force FD to come out with something. Zac came out with something. I didn't ask for it. It made me happy and excited. So why other people find it something to obsess over?

In LOTRO for example it's not.

It is not really pay to win and it is not bad either. There will be free content for core and additional one for existing Horizons owners. And new stuff for those willing to buy and LEP owners.

There's no contraversy.

Lotro doesn't feature open world PvP.
ED does.
If an open world PvP game has a paid for expansion (horizons), with PvP enhancing features (aka engineers, and also SLFs), than that's about as pure a p2w situation as p2w can get.
Now, ED also has a solo mode, meaning you can avoid all that. I understand this, and since that's where i play, i care little.
But everyone who wants to play in open will be at a PvP-disadvantage without horizons.
And i don't think i've seen many people on this forum who wouldn't ackknowledge that.

Who is 'obsessing'? - a few posts, (just the two from me including this one actually), does not constitute 'obsessing'. There is no good reason why Frontier couldn't have tagged this info on from the outset instead of, as I said, the drip feed approach.

It might well have a long life, unless people stop playing it.
That doesn't necessarily mean FDev will continue to add new premium content throughout that long life.

Obviously, I'm sure we'd all rather that wasn't the case but, y'know...

There's no indication for people stop playing it. Considering you don't have to pay sub to check out new content at base game level lot of people come back for updates.

So for FD it is actually worth to do updates - both simple and premium - as it brings back players.

Probably because they didnt anticipate just how anxious and scared some LEP owners are. So when they freaked out they tried to reassure them. Now people freak out about FD reassuring people g out about FD having an expo for people g out over the lack of solid info.

Its almost a comedy. Almost.

There is good reason - this and another six threads going around in circles all this week.

It is obsession. And I guess I am part of problem too, because I should just leave these threads and just enjoy life.

And to be frank, nothing personal here. I just disagree on FD doing something wrong in this specific case. But hey, it's Internet for you.

Have fun.

I am a LEP owner myself and I read that entire thread. It turned out that 4 people complained, 4 said some clarification would be nice but not needed, some said people should apply some common sense and the rest just said they don't care.

He was clear about that. It was not about shelf life without further improvement, but he's got plans.

Christ, 'freak out', 'obsessing', 'scared' really?- This is of Frontiers own making, get it all out there at the expo job done, maybe a bit of a forum fuss, instead Frontier's approach seems to be, drop some info, some forum fuss, drop some more, more forum fuss. Why would they take this approach that prolongs the fuss and not just be open from the outset?

They didn't expect that some LEP owners felt like they have been forgotten.

Listen, a lot of us are aware you'd be on board with them taking a dump in your sock drawer, we get that, but to deny the best thing to do would have been to lay all their cards on the table from the outset is ridiculous.

They didn't expect that some LEP owners felt like they have been forgotten.

It wasn't hard to foresee to be honest was it?, it wouldn't have taken much foresight, I mean there have been some posts and threads around the subject for ages. For them not to be able to see that the recent information drop is astounding. Yes, hindsight is always 20/20 and all that but you don't have to be Einstein to work out that the oven is still hot just after you turn it off.
