PSA: Not sure if anyone spotted this but a dev has confirmed there will be paid content as well as the free stuff...

I am a LEP owner myself and I read that entire thread. It turned out that 4 people complained, 4 said some clarification would be nice but not needed, some said people should apply some common sense and the rest just said they don't care.
Maybe FD should have kept their trap shut then I guess. Poor buggers really can't win sometimes.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think I'm going to mail Ed a cookie :)

Who is 'obsessing'? - a few posts, (just the two from me including this one actually), does not constitute 'obsessing'. There is no good reason why Frontier couldn't have tagged this info on from the outset instead of, as I said, the drip feed approach.

It is just marketing, you don't make all your announcements in one go, you need to keep people interested.

Should I get Obsidian Ant in here to calm everyone with his soothing voice?

That applies if this info had come out 3-6 months down the road when they had details, a few days after the expo with zero details it doesn't, we are not going to be getting drip fed info every few days, this may as well have been said at the expo.

It was clear from the live stream presentation that the last quarterly update of 2018 was going to be a big one. Watch here from 3.09.15:

Core game + Narrative + "Finally, New Features that complement those two, build on those two"

"Q1 is a stepping stone to a much larger update being brought out in Q4"

But the "main bulk of the team" will be concentrating on the features coming in Q4. He then adds "which we will be discussing this evening" ...... but I don't believe Q4 was discussed, was it, except for hints about exploration ? The presentation was much more about the first three 'Updates'.

So the bulk of the discussion about Q4 is yet to come, apart from Exploration, and I think Zac opened us up to that in his brief, tantalizing comment.

Commercially, Q4 needs to be a big one, to act as a 'hook' to bring in new players for the next "season" which will be Very Big (we hope !)

The other "mystery" is what is meant by these personal narratives ? (3:17:13) ... the weaponry only?

So, Frontier wont be surviving on the skin store alone,

It must have escaped your attention, but Frontier is a company with multiple revenue sources and is not dependant on just shop sales from one game for its income. Having possible paid content for one of their games next year isn't their only hope of income.

I honestly don't know whether to be disappointed or not
I think you should be disappointed now, it will save you so much (potential) heartbreak in the future when whatever FD release doesn't meet your specific (unfounded - because no information) expectations.

Don't build up your hope, its only going to come crashing down your round your ears, because of 'reasons' such as 'I don't like the colour of the planets', or 'there aren't enough ships' or some other 'reason'.

Alternatively you could ignore my advice and have hope. You can use it to delay the arrival of the dreaded 'disappointment', at least until the first announcement of the new content is made. Then you can be disappointed.

As a LEP I think they could have handled/communicated it better is all, lack of foresight on their part, I didn't partake in the LEP woes thread except to say, 'no news is good news isn't guys and gals?' as I was/am happy. And yeah, I agree with you on the 'this time' part, lack of foresight is not a good reason to not drop this info at the expo instead of a few days later.
I would also have prefferred all relevant info up front right off the bat. It cuts down on having to deliver relevant information piece by piece.

I agree. I took on board the stuff from FX17, but was expecting something different, so I had questions unanswered. I PM'd Zac, Zac responded in the LEP thread. I note the same two characters as full of religious fervour over their faith in FDev being questioned here as in that thread.

Personally I prefer to check rather than assume.

I also think the three or four confirmation posts made on this forum yesterday by Brett, Dale & Zac were excellent communication, and I hope for more straight answers to straight questions with less questioning the mental state of the ones seeking answers.

I suggest people go back and look at the Jurassic Park footage. Especially the environmental effects that they showed off. They face the challenge of getting that working and optimised on the Cobra engine for THREE separate platforms. Once that is done (and the game is released) they will be in a position to use it in Elite. Probably for atmospheric landings on some worlds (don’t expect earth like or water worlds) and maybe high altitude flight in gas giants. And I’m sure they will be happy to charge people for this extra content. (LEP holders excluded of course).

Why not announce it now? Because JP is acting as the development and test bed for the tech. By the time they are ready we are probably going to be well into Beyond. There is nothing to stop them turning round in July/August after JP is released and announcing the new paid content on top of the free stuff we have been shown. However if they do I really don’t think there is any chance of it being released until much later in the year. Possibly not until after Beyond updates are out. Maybe like Horizons we had the “Ships” release for the core game at the same time, this time the second big update will coincide with the new paid content. The new lighting model and terrain generation they were talking about could be due to Cobra engine changes bleeding through from a hypothetical paid “Atmospheres” update. However this is a major update. If I was FD I would buy myself some wriggle room by – say – not announcing anything specific right now. Meanwhile there is all the stuff that has been announced.

How they manage giving paying customers access to this content – well an obvious way would be to just add an “Atmospheric Heat Shield” to the store and let anyone who want to land buy it an fit it to their ships just like coloured weapons or engines. This may be more palatable than the season pass model.

So when FD dust off the Outsider project (or do another IP tie in – James Bond anyone?) that will be the clue that for Elite the long awaited “Space Legs” is finally coming. Presumably unlockable by purchasing footwear from the Frontier Store…

WARNING! The above contains an unhealthy level of speculation that may result in dizziness, uncontrollable laughter, high blood pressure, and in extreme cases, death.

What's the guarranteed ETA on that? Is it covered by the LEP? OA's youtube channel is free to access so is this going to be "premium content"? Is it pay 2 listen!?!?

God dammit T.J. SAY SOMETHING!

Dunno.
I read the Dev post referenced in the OP (was there more? Didn't look at the whole referenced thread) but it seems that people here are jumping to a whole lot of conclusions.

Honestly such things were bound to happen with the growth of the game into the console market alongside the PC.

Dozens of small DLC cutting future parts of the game up into a wide selection of premium components will sell like mad to a certain demographic that Frontier now have a much wider audience for now compared to back when Horizons was a thing.

Especially as they've confirmed they're introducing formal player group content such as group owned carriers.... cutting parts of that up into premium paid for content will likely make them a smeg load of money.

Remember even with Ship naming that was technically a 'Free feature' but tied to store front purchases in order to see any actual functional return from access to that feature.... you really think Frontier aren't drooling at the prospects of what they can do financially with formal player groups and asset ownership?

Free - The ability to form a permanent group with a list of friends that carries over into open and solo mode.

Paid - The ability for anyone else playing to see your group exists. Without this no one will know your group even exists and you'll be seen as individual commanders.

Paid - The ability to name your group, assign a logo and a base colour.

Paid - The ability to have your group name placed in an appropriate lettering location.

Paid - The ability to add your group symbol as a decal in a decal slot.

Paid - The ability to add your groups colouring as a colour tint to your current ship skin.

Paid - The ability to name your carrier.

and so on.

I do not see the problem.
We want more game, they need to pay for the development, we have to pay in some way or another. And no business is altruistic, they are all in for the profit, even if passionate about the product.
I rather ask for they to be transparent with me about it. Then I can decide where and when do I open my wallet. Because that is what truly matters in the end.

Honestly, as long they don´t go loot boxes, and be transparent about the model I will be ok.

Well it was pretty vague still.
There will be things to purchase. LTEP owners get "Premium Content" whatever that means. That's all I got out of the post.

All I was asking in that thread is that FD communicate what they are doing regards DLC going forward as it wasn't clear.
Zac's post didn't really make it clear but at least we got some communication that there will be some paid for content before the end of 2018 (hopefully not just cosmetics).
