To everyone opposed to the inclusion of player-set coordinate waypoint markers: if this feature were added to the game, would you start forum threads to demand its removal?
We dont need a great long complicated post about how to work out plnetary coordinates, its enough to know that the ship already knows where it is, the bone of contention is not HOW you find those coordinates, it's that you can't input coordinates into the ships nav system and have it point you at them like it does for all other nav points rather than you having to do it manually which is tedious.
That just shows your lack of comprehension I'm not complaining about a lack of GPS there is no reason to have GPS on any unsettled world, once again I'll try and explain it to you.
You can select a planetary settlement from your map and the ship will navigate you to it.
The ship must get the coordinates to that settlement from the map info held in the database in order to direct you to the correct spot on the planet.
Therefore the ship CAN indicate directions to you via the planetary coordinates it has access to.
Why can you simply not input any coordinates you desire at the map screen and have the ship direct you to them in exactly the same way it would do had it got those numbers from the database instead or a manual input?
Having to manually fly round a planet watching numbers is not exciting, not fun, does not require skill, is not competitive and does not teach you anything, it is not good "gameplay" it is a chore and an artificially induced one at that.
There are a thousand inconstancies in this game, they are usually there for the benefit of making the game more fun, this one does not add fun so comparing it to the inertia problems of high speed travel is a failed argument and no justification for this particular mechanic.
As I've already said, I'd prefer it if there was a trade-off for the addition ease of use.
Fit a DSS and get extra navigational features at the expense of using up a vacant slot.
Same as if you decide to use a docking computer.
My comprehension is fine.
I find the arguments petty, that's all.
Not getting smashed is a much bigger inconsistency, and the inconsistency was your point about navigation.
Sorry, not a big deal to me.
This is a good take on it.
Look - you are supposed to be a pilot on a ship - so you should be able to pilot (as in navigate (look it up)) your ship.
The simplest way is to fix one at a time by flying on 0/90/180/270 degree headings. But it's quicker if you can visualise it....

Yeah, I know. I have a pilots license IRL. I've navigated with GPS, VHF omi radio, and dead reckoning.
I stand by my assertion that landing by lat/long in the computer game that is Elite Dangerous is tedious.
I know what you're wanting... Hide and Seek indicators!
"cold, cold, cold... Oooh warmer, warmer, colder, warmer, warm, even warmer, warmer, hot, hot, roasting".
Of course then Verity would probably go "Eek! Look out!" **proximity alert** **danger** **proximity alert** "taking heat damage" **danger** "taking heat damage" **BOOM**

From my perspective, to balance quality-of-life against gameplay, I'd want to manually set a waypoint when I am landed at a specific location. So the first time I need to actually fly to a point and then after placing a waypoint I simply follow my compass to the waypoint. While it might seem a tad absurd, given the nature of the tech at the time, this could be a physical beacon that we plant in the ground.
We all know that this is a game and to some extent what might seem like common sense in reality is side-stepped for gameplay reasons. We can all have preferences about realism but I think we can all agree that Elite Dangerous is not meant to be a 100% reality simulation.

How the hell do you fly your ship down to a planet surface to specific coordinates? Like barnacles?
Struggling with this...have the coordinates but how do you get the right path?
