Now the long wait begins

I signed up for the Pimax 5K kickstarter yesterday. I'm thrilled, but it won't ship until February January, which seems like such a long time away.

Why pick the Pimax? 200 degree FOV, high res, no screen door effect, adjustable IPD, integrated earphones and mic, and no need for lighthouse boxes. Plus, I didn't have to buy VR controllers, since I plan to continue using my current joystick / VoiceAttack setup and I don't intend to play any other VR games. (I have hardly played any games in the last 2 years, except for ED.)

[update] I now see that the unit I ordered will actually ship in January, since I didn't buy the controllers. Yea!

I have gone for the 5k too, but I suspect the 5k will still have SDE. To get rid of that you should go for the 8k.

I certainly considered the 8k, but decided it was too expensive. As it is, I still haven't told my wife about it. She won't be happy, regardless, since she thinks I spend too much time playing ED as it is.

As for SDE, the people who got to test the prototype said SDE was minimal. Pimax claims even the 4K unit eliminates SDE, so that's a good sign. We'll know for sure in a few months.

It claims to have "cutting edge laser tracking" w/o light houses and also "Steam VR compatible mode" which uses 1 or more light houses.

I'm honestly not sure if the laser mode is only rotational tracking or if it also includes positional tracking. I can always buy accessories, if necessary. Right now, I have an EDTracker head-tracking unit which is only rotational. It sounds like the laser tracking is similar to the upcoming units from Samsung, Asus, etc. and includes position. I can probably make do w/o positional tracking, but I'm hoping that the laser tracking includes it.

You can add $75 to your Kickstarter that will get you one Pimax 2.0 Lighthouse for positional tracking. Or just buy a single lighthouse for cheap off ebay.

Hehe. I feel for you. I got my new rift on Saturday and it's still sat in it's box! My wife knows about it, but I'm keeping my head down. I'll be setting it up on Thurs when both kids are at school/nursery.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is fully positional.
Oculus and Google are both working on inside out tracking, most likely the next rift will not need cameras whatsoever.

just guessing here but I suppose they could beam out dozens of IR beams, measure their throw distance (somehow) and build a 3d world map out of it. And then track itself inside of it.

To play ED though, you will need at least one Vive base station and a controller to set up the HMD in steam VR as the game will use that.

On its own it has NO positional tracking; you MUST buy at least a single Lighthouse for that. The comments/FAQ have this question over and over, and whilst it may be a language barrier thing, it has been answered in various formats.

The "inside out" tracking is a module that they have developed, but costs extra (and there is no release date yet).

Beware! (i.e. add $75 for a single Lighthouse to be sure)

This is what I have done. I may need a controller as well, but may have to get that a bit later.

I have just pledged for the 8K but cannot find where/how to purchase a single lighthouse from pimax (I dont have a vive)??

Great! Thanks!
Done!
Now just hoping we won't need a wand controller for initial set-up since I am not interested in room-scale (don't have the room anyways)!

I think 4K has the same SDE as 8K, so almost no SDE in them. The 5K has a worse SDE than them, but better than CV1

SDE in 5K model is better than oculus CV1 but worse than Pimax 4K
the 5K Panel's PPI is round 490,

8K Panel's PPI is 806. if you really care about SDE, then get the 8K
version.

Thanks (everyone) for the info! I've added a $75 lighthouse to my order. Hopefully, I won't need a controller to setup Steam VR.

While I do care about SDE, I can't really justify spending the extra cash to get the 8K. There's some discussion about the 5K's display technology and even the possibility of selecting between OLED and CLPL. If so, I'm torn: OLED will have better blacks and more SDE and CLPL will likely have less total contrast and reduced SDE (not due to pixel size, due to pixel coverage). DPI is only part of the issue; pixel coverage seems to be more important (smaller pixel coverage has more black surround). From the Kickstarter page: "A 5K resolution is good enough to eliminate screen door, and ideal if you are not as deeply concerned about pixels."

If I have a choice, I guess I should get the CLPL.
