Corvette Road Block

I'm not sure you are asking the right questions. A Cutter can probably make slightly more money trading, but for gaining superpower rep you need to run a lot of missions and those will always be faster in a smaller ship. The ability to land at outposts, and ability to dock and launch quickly will be much more important than carrying 100t more cargo.

So, get a Python?

So, get a Python?

That is what I used to attain both ranks.

I didn't know you needed to carry cargo to rank up, I just thought you need data delivery missions ;)(ok, you need some cargo capacity for rewards, but only a small amount).

Anyway, my point is, best non aligned ship to do such missions is a cobra, or if you have the rank and the advanced performance thrusters, a courier. Getting out of mass lock quicker is more important than cargo capacity in ranking up.

But if you still think you need more cargo, an asp explorer would fit the bill too (plus it's quicker to jump to rank grind places).

The Python is great because you can run cargo and data to any port and therefore increase your rank quickly.

I don't like to use it for surface missions as it can be a pain to land on rough surfaces. As far as combat I prefer to use other ships, I find the multi-purpose ships to be cumbersome in combat.

That being said the Python is still very capable in either role.

I have several ships of all sizes from a ViperIII to the Anaconda and enjoy all of them but prefer combat ships for combat. Believe me, you'll enjoy the game more when you have a variety of ships to choose from.

I played the beta- messed about with both ships, but have strong points and weaknesses.

I bought the Cutter first, because i was working out of Fehu on long range smuggling, masses of cash and rep(nerfed now), i enjoyed the cutter for 5 mins, then parked it.
Cutter, it took a few extra days to make min rank, i bought it, loved it and now i have 2...

To answer the OP question- it is pretty simple, do you prefer combat or trade?

Combat
Cutter is a pure tank, huge shields, and lots of guns... but it lacks the finesse of a pure fighter, turrets are very handy, but not essential, turing circle of a small moon...
Vette- it is a beast in combat, great shields, tough armour and handles great, only down side is the low jump range, turning circle is fast, like a speedy FDL.

Trade
Cutter wins, monster 728 shielded trader, nothing comes close(yet)
Vette 2nd best cargo in the game(584 shielded) better jump range than a T9, lower jump range than a cutter

Basically- what do you want to do with either, and make a choice, go get rep, have fun then go do the other.. only you can make the choice- it all depends on your rank & rep.

Fly safe and have fun.

Data missions as well as a few scan or combat missions will give you large rep increases. Doing any kind of mission for a fed or imp aligned faction will increase your rep as well as selling at a profit to an aligned faction.

You don't need to carry cargo to rank up. I did though. Because in addition to the rank, I needed credits in order to properly outfit my Corvette as soon as I could buy it.

Wait....a corvette jumps better than a type 9 when both are full of cargo? I'm going to check that out but if it's true, damn the type 9 needs to lose some weight....

That's what I'm doing, run cargo missions for rank and profit as well as money to pay for bribes donation mission... Pick data on the second leg, straight cargo back to the first station.

Break that up with some scan or skimmers to keep from getting burnt out. Almost Post Captain now. Should make admiral in another week.

The Corvette is easily best for combat, as if the two huge hard points weren't the giveaway. Put G5 dirty drives on it and you'll love it. The Cutter handles like a space couch, but can't be beat for trading.

Good ships to grind for rank (rep++ and above) are a Cobra or an iCourier IMO.

You don't need much cargo for data delivery and scan missions and you save a lot of time docking/undocking while running missions.

I got the Corvette first and it is my daily driver. Like somebody said, second best cargo capacity, PvE dominator, flies best of the bigs, agile in supercruise like all Fed ships. is great in a PvP wing as support.

Very stable gun platform, allows use of fixed weapons (plasma, rails) more accurately. Easy to land w/o DC, threw my DC in the trash long ago.

Don't own a Cutter but did buy and outfit one in Beta. Handling was awful, weapon convergence takes practice, not even close as much fun to fly as a Corvette. Has great straight line speed and cargo/weapon capacity.

Both are expensive in all categories, billion CR to buy and outfit unless you get the discounts plus those re-buys.

Corvette drawbacks are low real space speed, size 1 hard points and lack of jump range.

Knowing what I do know and having experienced various ships (I own an Anaconda as well), I would go for the Corvette and re-grind if I had to. Not willing to grind for a Cutter.

Set your priorities and go for it.

Lightweight Corvettes can jump respectable distances: mine does 29Ly with compromises. It also travels at a decent speed too (308 cruise with 400 boost on a 138% DD G5). The fact is though the Corvette is never going to be quick or jump far when its doing what it does best, blowing up big ships with high AP weapons.

Hi all o7

I've done a LOT of reading these past few days on the Cutter and Corvette. I like to think I'm well informed of the advantages and disadvantages of both as well as the paths to unlock each one. One thing keeps popping into my mind though.

I don't mind grind, I have a much higher than average tolerance to it. I'm even thinking of just getting both ships, so choice isn't the issue for me. The question I need to ask is which to get first.

For those who share my laxed mindset towards grind, why would you not get the Cutter first? The Corvette is an amazing ship no doubt, but you are kind of stuffed if you then want to get the Cutter. Your jump range is abysmal, your cargo capacity could have been better, and it will be a bit if a pain to do anything other than combat.

If you choose the Cutter first on the other hand, you can perform well in every aspect. This will make it a LOT easier to get the Corvette. It's superior capacity, speed, jump range and module sets will ease off the pressure a bit when progressing towards the Corvette. If you went down the Federal route first, you are giving yourself a handicap for the next leg.

What do you guys think? Is there any reason at all not to get the Cutter first if you plan on getting both eventually?

Cutter, will pay for itself quicker adn the jump range is far better. Failing that I suggest that you go for the one that will be easiest for you to unlock first, based on your current ranks and reputation

In my case I never wanted a Cutter, so this was never a consideration.

I'd challenge the OP to ask the same question. Do you even WANT both ships? Many people are happy just flying an Anaconda and fore going the rank grind entirely.

Some really great inputs here guys, thanks.

My thinking around the statements I made is that the Corvette excels in one thing over the Cutter- combat. It's more maneuverable, hits harder, and has better armour. That's great and all, it truly is, but how far is combat going to get you If you're grinding for another "end game" ship?

To get reputation you need to complete missions (preferably charitable ones). To do that you need to be adaptable, have cargo space, a good jump range, and a variety of modules such as SRV hangars and other equipment. Personally I have seen few combat missions, and the ones I HAVE seen require you to jump from place to place and wait for your target to show. The Corvette can swat targets like flies, but it has to get there first and it's lack of adaptability beyond fighting seems like a handicap to me (at least in term of grinding).

Personally, I'd go Cutter first, if you're planning on the bulk of your time spent trading. Yes, she's a bit clunky, but you get over that pretty quick. Fill it up with cargo and run for the hills. If you're using one at a trade CG, you're printing credits.
