TM WartHog + E.D.

Is it me or are the buttons on the TM WartHog very hard to depress? My finger tips are going numb!

My X52 was nothing like that.

be interested to hear if it's the Hog or the same for everyone.

The 'hog is a stiffer stick. I believe it's known as "build quality" - the Warthog uses proper buttons and switches rather than the cheap carp in the Saitek sticks.
Having said that, after using a Warthog for a while, and an X52 Pro, I stuck with the X52 Pro because it's just more comfortable for me to use for hours.

Yeah, I'm on two minds whether to switch back to the X52.. The lack of twist grip and having to allocate it to the thumb hat is very annoying.

The throttle is by far a way better than the X52 and so much more precise and the actual Joystick is a joy (excuse pun) to use. But those buttons..

Wonder if the springs can be changed...

I was looking to replace my X52 Pro last year so brought a Warthog and Pedals to see if they would suit

Overall.. Lovely throttle action, joystick was heavy but smooth. I found the top secondary button placement less comfortable. It did feel like I was wrestling with the joystick rather than smoothly guiding it. YMMV ofc.

While it had loads of buttons these were of the 'toggle' nature. Now while I am sure I would have got used to it, I prefer the 'flip' type. So for example, to activate a shield cell or deploy landing gear in the warthog it required two switch activations (on then off) rather than just one in my X52 pro.

I had the full CH pedals too, but tbh I found them uncomfortable and much less precise than my twist yaw, it seemed to be an all or nothing thing, with less sensitivity than twist yaw, esp in an SRV.

Now I fully realise that after a while I could have got used to it.

I guess I am too used to my X52 Pro, but I really did want to give both the Warthog and pedals a go and spent many hours fiddling with it to get it right. , but I thought why bother. I could buy 3 X52 pro's for the same price as the warthog set up and tbh it didn't really add that much to my experience.

Warthog if you are flying a T9 maybe. I might even try that. I love how heavy and unresponsive that ship is.

Otherwise alot of other 'cheap' sticks with twist yaw are just better for Elite.
I also use pedals for up, down, left & right thrust.

Yes I have a Warthog. I leave it in the cupboard for this game.

It is military hardware. When you want to shoot it, you have to mean it. I love the TM Warthog HOTAS... it is not as fast as an X52 Pro, but it feels like the real thing.

Warthog with a stick extension is in a class of its own, the trick is to have it mounted properly just leaving it on the desk is a sin. The TARGET software also integrates with the Cougar MFD panels leaving you more buttons than a power station control room so you can use or leave the toggle switches as you choose :)

The main problem with the Warthog is you need to invest a little time money and equipment in getting it setup right, its not really a plug & play device its full on cockpit immersion. Once it is though there is no reason you'd ever touch a CH or X52 again and frankly you're missing out.

I use my toggle switches for things like cargo scoop and landing gear I wouldn't even consider it for Shield Cell Banks [blah]

Position it correctly.

The stick is intended to go in between your legs. Expensive equipment or not, if you're reaching sixty meters up and to the right to use your stick, it's going to be a chore to do anything.

When I tell people that the WH owners tell me off. :p

Nah I can get on board with it. For me part of it's about having a true non-twisty stick; using yaw pedals, the yaw lock function on the x52 doesn't stop it rattling side to side. The WH is the goddamn pinnacle of sheer precision (at least in HOTAS terms. For actual aiming precision, sorry folks, mouse reigns). But that doesn't make it perfect for ED, nor suited to every player, by any stretch.

Not just you. My CH HOTAS has been failing rapidly, and it seems somewhere in the last ten years or so, the company has taken a dive, quality wise, so I decided to treat myself, and used my quarterly bonus for a Warthog.

It arrived yesterday. First thing I noticed was how stiff the buttons were. Second thing is just how substantial the controls feel. Third thing I noticed is that some of those physical switches on the throttle base are going to be a pain in VR.

Last thing I noticed is that muscle memory sucks when it works against you. ;)

Add Voice Attack and all the VR problems will be solved.

I don't use VR, but I almost never use the toggle switches on the throttle.

The buttons are firm, but I think that high level of resistance is great! No pain/numbness and the like. When I used my X55 I felt like I would break it every time I pressed something down. Plastic would creak and bend, no clear feedback that things are depressed, but when you press something on your Warthog you know you have pressed it. :)

It did take me maybe 30-40hrs of game time before I could say I was really used to the resistance though. Before this time I would feel some fatigue after a couple hours straight. You build this up though, and regular use should help strengthen your hands/arms relatively quickly. Worth sticking with it.. excuse the pun :/

For me and my XXL golf glove sized paws, everything I tried up until my WH felt like a kids toy. Very happy with the heft and feel of the WH hotas.
