Today's Rant: Military Ranking

A couple of weeks ago I decided to finish out my Federation RANK grind from Vice-Admiral to full Admiral because frankly, I had nothing better to do. Drove my Asp-X Cleopatra (She's an Asp, get it?) out to Sothis and started running data delivery missions back to Ceos and then back to both stations in Sothis, Newholm and Sothis Mining (the reason for the medium-landing-pad capable ship). I ran data, the occasional cargo and donation missions, including some million credit donations, flipping boards to get my 20 each trip and still profited. After about three hours I (went from 67% to 100%) got my FED Navy Admiral rank-up mission, a data courier mission. Once I had my Admiral rank I drove to Newholm, loaded up on Sothis Crystalline Gold and flew "home" where I profited almost 500,000 credits on only 20 (30 is the limit) tons of the stuff. o7

Seems like the missions that pay the most Cr often pay the least rep and influence, especially missions that stack easily. It's like a trade off, you get one or you get the other. With combat zones, you get paid for that per ship basically, probably around 500K per ship once you consider the mission money and the actual CZ money. Data delivery hasn't paid well from what I have experienced, but it seems that for some it does.

Earn credits -> spend them on donation missions.
That's the fastest way in my experience.

Most frustrating thing was the boards not working at all...

Been stuck at 100% for weeks now and I'm not getting any rank up missions at all. I'm allied in and around Sol and nothing. Nada. Zip.
It's quite frustrating. I think our ranks should just tick over like the Combat, Trade and Exploration ones. It's really annoying having to hope you get Navy mission to rank up having been stuck at 100% for so long.

You must be doing something wrong, those missions pop up like clockwork once the conditions have been met. Maybe you are not at the correct stations, maybe your REP is not Cordial, Friendly or Allied with the local FED factions at the stations you are visiting or maybe just not recognizing the rank-up mission when you see it.

The system you use is not important and also, you do not become Allied with a system, you become Allied with the local FACTIONS inhabiting a system. I will use Federation as an example since you do not specify, you can just switch the word Federation for Imperial as applies. For Federation rank what is important is that you are considered Cordial, Friendly or Allied with the local FEDERATION faction(s) at the station(s) you are visiting. The more FED factions you are (Cordial, Friendly or) Allied with at any station, the greater chance the rank-up mission will be offered by one of them. If you are not Cordial, Friendly or Allied with the local FED faction(s) at a station you will not receive the rank-up mission offer and you will need to increase your REP with the local FED faction(s) at that station to get the offer. Also, it may not say "rank-up" mission. Sometimes the board will say "rank up opportunity" but often does not. You must look for either the word "NAVY" or the word "NAVAL" in the mission title. Any mission with either of those two words in the mission title is a rank-up mission. o7

I think a lot of CMDRs get confused regarding their goals when trying to increase their RANK. They begin by wanting to increase their RANk and then get side-tracked trying to maximise profits as well. In order to rank-up at a fast rate it is usually necessary to forego high-profit missions. When trying to increase REP or RANK, forget about maximising profit! Remember the goal! A CMDR will often lose credits ranking up due to low-profit missions and donations. I see this all the time (did it myself) where CMDRs forget they are transporting a few hundred tons of valuable mission-cargo and decide to drop into that high-grade-emissions USS, or allow that interdiction because they are feeling confident, only to get jumped and blown-up. Stay on mission! Eyes on the Prize! o7

There are people who fly. Apparently there's a knack to it, but it involves falling towards the ground and forgetting to hit it. A distraction is meant to help with the forgetting part. I've tried it, but, I can't get the hang of it. Last time, I broke a few ribs, but alcohol may have been involved, and the distraction wasn't enough.

Try to pee off a high cliff one day, it is more difficult than it sounds. Some people have difficulty "going" while looking at a 30,000 foot drop out the window. o7

TBH Bob I've not played in few days, it was driving me so mental. Is the 'Wheel Of Fortune' still as bad on PS4? And the failure to "load complete Mission Board"?

[ugh] The unfortunate part is, the chrome, gold and black friday skins are limited edition and currently unavailable. [cry]

Here's hoping that Black Friday this year makes at least 1 of them available; getting the feeling my wallet is going to take a beating, but at least my little fleet will look awesome lol! [smile]

Jetson, I'd been allied with the Fed and STILL stuck at 100% for now 14-15mnths. No missions. Nothing. Nada. So simply stopped playing anymore as I'd reached that point where I could not continue my own personal quest.

Go to a Military system, and earn some rep.

They'll soon pop up.

Hopefully. Lol

That's worth a support ticket perhaps.
I'm Duke/Rear Admiral; but I only made Duke first about 3 weeks ago, and Rear Admiral a week ago.
So I'd done roughly a naval mission a day, for almost a month.
I've never really had to wait for them.
Usually just doing another mission would trigger them in the same station.
I could even see multiple naval missions to choose at some points.

edit: You need to be at least friendly with the local minor factions that give out the missions, it's not the superpower rep that matters for those.

If military service was what led to promotions, there wouldn't be homeless veterans.

Going up the military is like going up in politics; Running lots of favors and kissing a lot of bum.

Sad but true, though it does lend credence to the data delivery and "donation" missions for ranking.
