Just don't get it

So here's a thing in the whole I don't get the random attacks thing. If I was going to be a pirate I'd TOTALLY do it in Open and target PC's.

Here's how I'd do it.

First up get a wing, 1 freighter and a selection of attack craft, if possible something meaty to slow jump spin up.

Next find a good place to sell the haul, an Anarchy close to the bubble would be good. Somewhere you can retreat to.

Then it piracy time, pick a system, pick targets, interdict them and then give them the pirate spiel.

"Hi, Don't run or we will shoot. If you drop some cargo now we'll let you go. We're going to scan you and we'll know if you're got anything nice."

Important thing is don't shoot unless they shoot first or they try and run. Heck try and not gain bounty if you can get away with it (but accept it if it happens).

Do this for a while then pick a new system. Every once in a while pop home and sell you ill gotten goods.

See.... if THAT happened to me when I'm flying along with 4 tons of mission prizes I haven't got round to selling yet I'd totally drop them. (Or in my Fer De Lance maybe even try fighting back... maybe not 5 v 1 though).

Just ganking people though... I just don't see the point.

Like I say, PC's will react better than AI pilots. You'll need hatch breakers for them. If you do it well a PC may well just drop their stuff.

Again. Thanks for all your kind words.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we not talk about religion. As Yaffle said.

Some people just like to be bungholes to others. Best to be glad you don't understand it or are like that. :)

OP, depression and anxiety are very serious issues that many ignore. They're also hard to separate from the usual mood swings all of us go through. Keep up with therapy (hopefully you're in CBT or RLT) and stick with the "homework" they give you. It's made a huge difference for me as I went years with undiagnosed depression and anxiety that impacted every facet of my life. It's something I will deal with for the rest of my time, but it's manageable now and I can function as well as anyone else.

If the game is causing you issues with mood, then I highly recommend stepping away for a time to reevaluate what it is you want from your experience. No hobby should make you feel worse, as this is supposed to be a time for fun and escape. Consider why the game is making you feel bad and what steps you might take to mitigate those feelings.

I'm a private message away if you need any advice or just need a shoulder.

There may never be any true "hard evidence", but when you're unwell, anything that helps helps.

As someone who also suffers severe depression, anything but professional help is just a mask that gives only temporary relief, it does not go away regardless of what people think, with medication, you learn to manage the condition.

And one other thing, offense is taken, not given.

There are those who do Give offence. And yes, clinical, medical, biochemical depression IS a very medical condition, and I would never advise someone not to seek medical help. The medications will do their job, that's what they're for - but managing a condition is only one part of the equation. Medications will treat the body. A licensed therapist (counselor or whatever) will treat the mind. And a spiritual outlet (faith of any sort) will treat the spirit.
Having that something else, whatever form it might take, as an additional outlet certainly does not hurt, but should never be considered a substitute either.

I've lived with clinical depression in the family and dealt with it for many years, and I have always and will always give the same advise: Definitely seek medical help, professional help, and (the very stressed operative "and") continue to practice your beliefs as well. Your doctors and professionals keep office hours. The spiritual realm is always open 24/7. And I've seen it make a difference - when someone is at a low, in the wee hours, when the offices are closed, and the dark of night seems like a brilliant mid-day in comparison to the mood that overtakes someone, a little ritual practice - a prayer, meditation, or ceremony is enough to help someone make it though that dark time until those offices open.

Sometimes medication is not enough on its own and requires supplemental therapy. Sometimes therapy isn't enough and medication is also required. In most cases, neither is enough alone so a combination of the two is usually prescribed. The success rate for the two together is quite high for cases of depression and anxiety.

Escaping reality via video games is not a good idea.

You got killed in a multiplayer space shooting game. NO BIG DEAL.
One day you die another day you will kill someone else. Working as designed.

You didnt loose anything valuable, only imaginary credits.

No. Big. Deal.

Scimon...

Mobius PVE is the place to be, Every CMDR i have met in Mobius has been friendly. Join up.. although at the minute you wont find many CMDR's because the CG's are out in Colonia. :( Start adding some friends that play in Mobius to see where they are and what they are up to.

I was the same as you at one point, but i found my little 'safe haven' playing ED.. in fact i branched out to games i never thought i would ever play Eg. Dark Souls 1,2 and 3... and mastered them lol. A lot of The Witcher 3 and plenty of other games. But ED is the game i always came back to.. and still do now.

I beat my depression back in January after 9 months of counselling, seeing the family and talking to good friends, shutting out the rest of the world and keeping myself to myself. Keep attending therapy even if it does get disheartening because i can guarantee you will find your main problem and deal with it. In my case i had to complete the most simple of tasks.. that task made me realise what i had to do.

Remember.. you are never alone playing Elite unless you play solo.. stick to Mobius. I know i'll never play in another group/server anymore.

Relax and take everyday as it comes.. don't worry about anything!!

If everybody played bad guy pirate that way a lot more of us would be in Open.
You can play the pirate but at the same time also care about giving your 'client' a cool experience.
There are many pirate players who do play that way, but sadly there are lot of miscreants in ED too.
Anonymity and unaccountability turns them into something ugly.
Of course there are a lot of shades of grey too.

Why not? It has helped me through the decades.
There are all kinds of escapes: books, tv, movies, religion, games etc.. Gaming is as good as any, and it gets better all the time, because technology progresses.
I especially love big open game worlds that let me do what I want (within design limits of course).

Playing games won't help you. It's nothing to do with ED you are feeling like this. You need to get out and be with real friends. Do social things. Take your time, don't be hard on yourself. See a counsellor...through the doc if you cannot afford private. There are many things I would recommend but playing computer games in your room without any real interaction is not one of them! Good luck :)

Oh absolutely, you have no idea how Witcher 3 story and characters helped me to be distracted from my depression and all of other bad stuff. It cleared my mind, gave me something positive to think about and helped in the big picture.

You can speak about this with the Code/SDC. But AFAIK, they resorted to ganking because of the sheer amount of combat loggers when they were actually pirating.

OP lucky they tried to interdict you like old days.

I used to love Open, I loved PvP battles or lucky escapes, PP in wings in Open, but now I think Open is more people crashing into you inside the station than anything (no skill required), hence why I don't bother to play in Open anymore.

Solo is not great, but at least it makes more sense, than acne-scared Kamikaze kids waiting to grief normal players. The less people play in Open the longer they wait.. that sounds good to me.

I don't care for their justifications. Ganking is ganking and it is one of the most despicable things one can do in a game.
I have listened to the justifications of an SDC spokesman on lave radio and it was all , from the first to the last syllable.

I'm feeling a lot better today. Been out at the pub playing some magic with friends and ust had a short play session where I hunted down a pirate so that was nice.

Bed now.

Thanks all. I'm good.

(Oh and I started using Inara properly so now have a thingy in my sig).

OP, depression and anxiety are very serious issues that many ignore. [snip] It's made a huge difference for me as I went years with undiagnosed depression and anxiety that impacted every faucet of my life.

I'd be really annoyed if every faucet I used just merely went "meh" and gave me a dribble of water because it couldn't be bothered.....

Seriously though I've also suffered (still am) and feel games are good therapy, as long as the you avoid those who will just feed on that depression like a meth head.

I think the advice of joining a smaller PG with active interaction rather than a larger one where players are just there to get away from the idiots is good - If there isn't one, you could always make one, going by many threads seems there's lots of players who would like some more player interaction, who don't necessarily want to be tied to doing BGS stuff.

You could maybe make one that concentrates in a section of the bubble and people could come and go but be more likely to meet or co-operate with other players. A sort of "Sector X PG". Once you've got a few members you can make a FB page and organise events or notify of ongoing activites..... you prolly might not even have to do all that yourself, there's usually people around good at that sort of thing in most games.

Only things I would stipulate are no PvP and if they leave that area of space they MUST leave the group but they are free to rejoin if they return.

(might even help space to feel more occupied.)

No idea if you can join multiple PG's - but it's a thought?

Except this is an intendend game play as designed by FDEV, you might want to take it up with them if you dont like how they built the game.
Gankers are just playing the game in the way it allows them. They probably dont take this game so seriously and for them to kill someone is just a matter of pixels.
