Just don't get it

Except this is an intendend game play as designed by FDEV, you might want to take it up with them if you dont like how they built the game.
Gankers are just playing the game in the way it allows them. They probably dont take this game so seriously and for them to kill someone is just a matter of pixels.

Absolutely!

So why do it? There are even ty of reasons I can think of for attacking another player in game. Powerplay, bounty hunting, piracy if you think they are working against you in the bgs.

Heck if another player challenged me to a fuel, with a bit of warning I might be tempted. But just mining someone who isn't looking for a fight and ganging up on them...

Why not play destiny? Of battlegrounds or one of a million games where that's what it's about.

I guess I am asking where is the fun. Because past the "it's just some pixels" argument it feels to me like it's the fun a bully has picking on someone weaker than them.

You don't understand. For some individuals, the gain is from the pain they inflict to others. The gain is to show their superiority. They probably have a very miserable life, a poor job or a partner they can't stand anymore, and for them, that's a way to show that they are awesome. It's hard to understand but I believe that's why they do it. Why are some people killing others? Same reasons. It could be mental disorder or any other reason you want to find. They just enjoy destroying defenseless people to reinforce their own ego. That's all.

And then, let's not forget that a lot of these people can't even "own" what they're doing and, instead, attempt to justify it by saying they're highlighting flaws in game design, they're teaching newbies a valuable lesson, they're roleplaying or that they're acting on behalf of some faction or other.

Nah, 'fraid not. You're just being a tool.

For the lulz. For the salty tears on the forums. For the rage quits. For the infamy. Plenty of reasons. You may not like them, but they are legitimate and within the game mechanics. And it makes some people feel better about themselves. It's called projection, and it's normal to do if you're in pain. And VERY common in PvP games.

Fly safe bud. :)

Oh wow. Arm chair psychology at its best.
Couldn't be farther from the truth tbh.

I dont remeber having to fill in a FB thing for Mobius, I just popped along to thier website and that was that, I dont do FB groups, well tell a lie Im in one but that is made up off a lot of old Jump Gate players, as for playing in the PG tbh I use it in the bubble from time to time and the few people I have met have been cool.

But I dont play games to be soical anymore, past the games I play with my other half, Ive been there done that seen it end in tears more than once, when your having aguments over TS (discord is the new thing) its time to call it a day. Thus 99% of my game time is in solo where the only person I have to worry about is me.

Somone RPing the space pirate I can fully understand, people killing for no reason and no coms, they might as well be playing a FPS.

Scimon, I can sympathize. The best interactions I've had in-game have been with groups of 2-6 like-minded players. If you like to explore, consider the Fleetcom group or join some other expedition. Meet someone on the forum and then plan to do something in-game together, like exploring the alien ruins or Thargoid structures.

There's been some good advice above, so I'll try not to repeat it. Meet up with friends. If they have friendly pets, that's even better. An affectionate dog can do wonders for a glum mood. Try to get plenty of sleep, on a regular schedule and get some real sunlight in the morning. (That helps my wife a lot.) Try to eat a well balanced diet and get some moderate exercise, which has been shown to improve peoples' moods (and it will help you sleep also).

Hang in there; things are bound to get better. o7

So what is the truth?

Keen to hear someone describe the motivation behind this too. That said I think we all just need to accept that some people view the internet, and games, as a free for all where what they do has no consequences, and expect others to feel the same. When these players meet someone who is looking for friendly human interaction that makes in game sense and adds to their game play there is bound to be a mismatch.

Can't say any side is right or wrong as long as the game mechanics are the way they are (although personally I find the lack of consideration for other players to be disconcerting at best), but there is absolutely no way that these two distinct types of players will find common ground.

I do not need to take up anything with anybody to have an opinion on ganking.
But ganking is not intended game play. That much I can tell you.
Never heard of having a personal responsibility for your own behaviour?

Gankers are just playing the game in the way it allows them.

You can get away with a lot in life. That does not mean you must treat others that way. You have a personal responsibility for your behaviour.

They probably dont take this game so seriously and for them to kill someone is just a matter of pixels.

No, it is not that innocent. I have listened to their justifications and I have watched several of their videos.
Having been the victim of bullying as a child for many years I recognize the disgusting stench of the twisted mindset and attitude of a bully from a mile away.
Just go watch these videos. There is a sickness in them.

So. I've been feeling depressed recently. To the point that I've finally admitted it and start therapy. One of the things I do to relax is play games, but I'm finding Elite (a game that I love) to be disheartening.

The Frontier Expo gave me an anxiety attack and I left after the second talk having failed to meet anyone. Yet afterwards I heard all these people going on about the great community and stuff... I just felt alone.

I started listening to Lave Radio again (though the most recent rambling podcast made me think that's not likely) only to realise that Mobius that I'd been in since it basically started was now too big and they had a Facebook account and stuff... And they wanted me to fill in forms to join it. So I left the group.

I'd been recently playing in Open because I wanted to try and get some interaction with people and had had a couple of fun chats.

Then last night I was interdicted by a wing of two guys who proceeded to try and kill me. No request that I drop my cargo (or a scan to see if I had cargo). I have no bounties on my head and no faction allegiance. They just wanted to bully someone.

I escaped and after getting into Hyperspace dropped out into Solo (just as they interdicted me again). If I play Elite again it'll probably be in Solo.

I needed to post this somewhere because the anger and hurt I felt last night is still bubbling away. I love flying my space planes but I wish I could find this community people keep talking about.

I'm sorry for your situation, however posting here about your feelings regarding working game mechanics and your anger at players actions is a bit of a non-isues TBF. Open is what FD made of it. Comms are almost non functional and player interaction has devolved into Spay and Pray with heavy weapons :). The community as a whole is ok but in-game you are more likeley to meet a numpty or two due to the inablity to even chat easily, I really dont know what they were thinking, or maybe they took the Ubisoft route and decided to let the players fix it. Either way ED's communication is shockingly bad.

As an ordained minister, I'll take offence there. Not much offence, but some. Off topic, for sure, but there is scientific evidence that having and practicing faith, any faith, is just plain good for a person.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...-health-dr-harold-koenig-skeptical-scientists - non-secular, plain old news article

http://www.sbclife.net/Articles/1997/12/sla16 - highly secular report regarding the same.

http://www.newsmax.com/Health/Headline/prayer-health-faith-medicine/2015/03/31/id/635623/ - another non-secular article.

There may never be any true "hard evidence", but when you're unwell, anything that helps helps.

Heathy Body, Health Mind, Healthy Spirit - and that's all I have to say about that.

I swear EVERYONE feels they have the right to be offended, and you are right, go ahead and be offended.. Hear that? Thats no-one caring mate. Any person that feels the need to follow worship based religion is already needing counseling IMHO, believing in an immortal benevolent savior is fine until you realize that deity you pray to would also then be responsible for brain cancer in children......... ANY religion that requires worship should be banned.

What do they gain?

It makes no sense.

A subjective feeling of personal satisfaction...have you ever betrayed someone who trusted you with their life? Its easier and more legal in video gaming but just because you dont get it doesnt mean others wont. That ability to create fear through a video game and spread anarchy and destruction down on someones perfect world and mentally crush someone...thats a very addictive feeling and quite possibly the best justification ever fer not giving some of us the freedom we had with games like eve.

If ye think this game is toxic, then ye must have lived a very sheltered life on the internet. Course, everyone has differing standards and while you might not like, agree or even understand why some act in such ways, they in turn might not understand what your problem is with them because they dont live by the same standards you do.

Far as depression goes, Im a widowed single father living with crippling debts and a past criminal record that means Ill never hold down anything better than working in macdonalds, who was diagnosed with a life altering incurable disease that means I live with chronic pain 24/7...while raising an autistic daughter alone with no outside help whatsoever. Fer me depression is a daily thing while fer many others, its a hobby and the 'new vogue' where its almost fashionable to say yer depressed. Wanna compare scars from previous suicide attempts? Im game if you guys are ^
