Wow. First time in 3.5 years I think: That´s it for Elite: Dangerous

When this white knight doesnt feel like playing ED he does something else and comes back later. If you hurry you can grab some cool stuff from the Steam Sale. Kinda beats me why that is a noteworthy or novel idea, and dont quite get what all this 'hype' and 'hope' and 'expectations' and 'potential' stuff is about. Its not a cure for cancer, its a $50 game. So far 2.4 has been a letdown to me, had some brief moments of fun with the Thargoid but its essentially 2.3 for the rest. Been having a bit of fun in a Viper, and have been spending more time on other games and making music. When something happens I'll spend more time on ED again. :)

I started a friend on ED, he's been talking lately about getting a Star Citizen package, and I've been checking that out. I'm tired of the "next release will be better or add more content" line from ED. Sure, SC is still in Alpha and won't be out for quite a while, but it's looking pretty good.......

Some people really don't learn. When you're unhappy with what you have and how slow things are, the last thing you ought to do is move to a 'game' that has less and moves even slower. Ah well. :)

Long:

The promised "narrative" for 2.4 seems still yet to come.

We saw 4 CG´s that were boring as hell. We saw a god-mode nerf of the weapons because "Thargoids adapt". We saw a couple of USS´s to optional encounter Thargoids. And we saw the 109th revision of the mission system with a tremendous bad quality.

Especially after the FX2017 which I attended I was still confident that something will happen this year - but it looks like that´s not the case. Frontier didn´t manage to keep the expectations up in my case - and I don´t believe (with the roadmap in mind) that Elite will make it beyond 2018.

Several reasons for it:

Development has slowed down. I spoke with several Devs on FX17 and they all stated: Yes, it has slowed down, and yes, the reason is the tremendous complexity of the game - and in it´s current state it is still a quality desaster in my eyes.

Everything that has to be done has been done (Exploration, Trading, Shooting, PP, even CQC) and I have problems finding reasons to fire up the game.

2.4 in general turns out to be a desaster and - that´s what most people forget - it´s almost 1 year late. Regarding the developement of the game: We saw the first Thargoid animations back in February. This means that the main work was done last year. This also means that FD´s performance throughout the year was very low.

If I have to speculate: Elite has been abandoned and it is just kept alive by a small team. I hope I am wrong.

TL;DR: FD didnt manage to deliver and that´s just frustrating. 2.4 is - currently - a joke.

utterly, utterly, utterly...............in agreement!

Well, I agree with you OP. I jumped on the hype train, and when it didn't deliver I just kind of gave up. Sure, I tried to like the Thargoid "content", but it just fell flat. After a half dozen hours of futzing with Thargoid encounters, checking out the new mission boards, and trying to get interested in the latest CG's, I parked up in MAIA and haven't logged in for 3 weeks. I started a friend on ED, he's been talking lately about getting a Star Citizen package, and I've been checking that out. I'm tired of the "next release will be better or add more content" line from ED. Sure, SC is still in Alpha and won't be out for quite a while, but it's looking pretty good.......

First, taking break from ED for whatever reasons isn't something tragic or world ending. Or not enjoying ED...well, it is a game, some like it, some not.

As for SC however I really would really suggest to think again as that game is either not coming out at all, or coming in 3 - 4 years. Just a really well meaning advice. If you complain about FD delivering, those guys are not delivering anything at all resembling game.

Also never jump on hype train.

You absolutely have the right to your opinion, and I totally respect that.

That said, we've always known the "narrative" of 2.4 would be release slowly over time, so I don't see how that is a surprise?

Elite today (2.4) is a little better than is was when 2.3 came out, which is a little better than when 2.2 came out etc.

If those little improvements aren't enough for you pickup Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, Everspace, and Spaec Engineers and you should have PLENTY to keep you busy :-D

If there's anybody at FDev capable of a bit of self-reflection, I'd hope they (privately, if not in public) accept that the ONLY truly noteworthy thing Horizons has brought IS planetary landings and, frankly, they might have spent their time more usefully doing something else instead of all the rest of it.

"Planetary landings" were the best part of the 'Horizons' season, true. And while I would agree that most of the other stuff was a little underwhelming (Engineers and Multi-crew as headline features were utterly disappointing, IMHO), there was another pretty entertaining feature, and that were "Ship Launched Fighters", especially in combination with NPC pilots for those fighters. That's the one feature of the second season - again, apart from the awesome planets - that I have been been using almost all the time: the SLFs are blast to fly and having that NPC crew member at your side and leveling them up is surprisingly engaging. It makes one wonder how much potential lies in the idea of expanding NPC crews...

Edit: another feature in 'Horizons' I had been looking forward to for a long time but that got implemented in a way very much like what I feared would be the worst case were passenger missions. Still annoyed how little they differ from cargo hauling and how many opportunities to set passengers apart from cargo FD missed :( (see link)

I agree that 2.4, so far, has been kind of "meh", and it's already piling up on another update, 2.3, which was also a complete "meh" to put it mildly.

But we know that there is still the rest of 2.4 to come, whatever it is, so how about we first see the rest of it before casting final judgement?

First impressions are important ya know?

After 3.5 years? Lucky you, I quit NMS after 3.5 days...

Not often I rep ye so enjoy it while it lasts...but well, ye actually have a good point. I find 50 waves of horde insanity on gears of war 4 has one moving around a fair bit...reminds one that finger dexterity is a perishable skill when yer used to being too laid back in games.

Just go play something else mad and brainless with big guns and impossible boss fights fer a couple months to recharge the mental batteries. The more ye stay on this forum, the more bitter ye will get and ye really need to know when to walk away while yer still calm and clear headed. Yes 2.4 has been a joke so far although the thargoid storyline never floated my boat in the first place and Im out fer other reasons that go further back.

But in saying that, I also know I will come back. Not maybe, not if...I will be back cos Im not done with this game...just done fer now is all. Much more chilled out about it now Ive accepted it. But seriously man...get off the forum cos deranged discussions is just misery central atm. Leaving threads always get dragged down by both sides equally because its something to do that everyone can get their teeth into...ironically, its boredom that does that to people...just sayin ^

Thing is we don't really know whats in this update, maybe there's a whole Thargoid 'bubble' hidden behind locked permits.
Stations, planets, ships of all different kinds. Hundreds or thousands of hours of coding and graphics.

We don't know, its been said this isn't an everything from the start patch and i'd expect more patches to follow.
Has much changed since 2.3 apart from QoL stuff? Not really, but its far too early to make comments on 2.4 content when its not actually be revealed yet.

Waaaw.....i like your imagination

No imagination to it. A Frontier response literally said we should treasure just how easy we have it right now. This was in regards to Thargoids.

There's a huge shift coming and we're all caught up whining about how we want it now. In all reality, it would take them time to evaluate us as a hostile threat and mobilize forces against our bubble. No amount of "alien thinking" can defy that logic when they've already displayed an indifference to us.

First impressions with Thargoids have been great.

Now, if you want to rush story somewhere...it's subjective. Lot of people seem to expected mission story line - FD didn't promise that for starters, although they hinted that might still come during FX - or Thargoids destroying Sol or Earth or something.

None of which FD indicated.

It is usual of 'people hype something, get disappointed, see for other thing to hype about' story. And WE ALL DO IT. That's understandable.

I personally find Thargoids story believable. People find destroyed mega ships, fleets, more Thargoid places. Thargoids are still open to all kind of gameplay. Rescuing civilians, shooting them, researching them.

This is not a Hollywood type game. I guess that disappoints lot of players. As not being that kind of game, it still have rough edges, and FD toolkit for telling story is rudimentary. Lot of posts in these days have provided good feedback for improving those parts. Devs also talked about having tools for next steps for Thargoids in next year.

Yeah, also 2.4 is just a beginning. Thargoids are here to stay and things will become more...difficult. It will be slow reveal, there are two more story updates planned next year.

I would also like to point out that there's something to consider - story might be also slow if you follow ED news every day. For someone checking in once or twice a week story moves already too fast

as was pretty much expected, and even anticipated here on the forum. question: what exactly is it what you have been doing these last 3.5 years?

Especially after the FX2017 <snip> I don´t believe (with the roadmap in mind) that Elite will make it beyond 2018.

i see where you're going but am not convinced. frontier sits on top of a load of cash, and has a very loyal fanbase. the plan to use that muscle to stabilize the mess (and even probably generate some discrete content and income so it's not a total loss and the fanbase maintains some interest) sounds viable, and could put them in 2018 with a good foundation to work on. downsizing the team is not really bad news when trying to consolidate a software base, au contraire, the less heads the better, and what's really important is patience and doing things right.

now, the question is ... will the fanbase hold for over more than another year with limited content? i guess we will have to wait and see, but i would say yes.

anycase one thing is clear: you've been playing way too much, bud. take a break! :)

Oh look, defenders of the Faith have arrived.

Hardly....I just grow weary of the seeming endless number of "this game sux! fdev have ruined all teh things!" posts.

If you don't like the game and want to quit, don't like the game and quit. Coming on the forum to moan and whine about it smacks of an adolescent tantrum.

Elite Dangerous does add expansions with the updates over time, and its a playable game. Star Citizen tries to do everything at the same time with higher quality, but doesn´t have a playable game yet. Thats a way to see it.

An easy way to add to E.D would be bases, NPCs and more content. Rewards and loot. And the feeling of development and evolving a situation, base, NPC and missions which is already done with the ships.
