(Gameplay) Search and Rescue: FD. What are you even try to do with it? What is a point?

Yep its one of Frontiers worst faults. They say "we've added a new salvage contact" and we think "wow a new career, a new way to play" but they have just added a new salvage contact. This may have taken lots of work to separate the salvage commodities and give them there own database. But it doesn't add anything for us.
They should state that this is a placeholder or that you can use this in this way, otherwise we just feel utterly confused by it all. I don't know if its because developing any career I so complex in the game code or if they don't have a clear vision of salvage gameplay. But just having a tab with terrible payouts and a thank you doesn't feel like development.

I would love to see salvage appear in all aspects of the game. Being able to sell engineer materials to salvage craft, being able to trade materials and modules with salvage contacts. Whilst mining stumbling upon a ship hulk and being able to extract modules with salvaged limpets. Searching for combat USS's to wait for the battles to end, maybe having to silent run and then saving security ship parts or data.

Having to scan departing capitol ships wakes or searching for capitol ship debris. Finding lost explorers, returning lost pods to their family to their debtors, to their enemies.
Silent running in confict zones waiting to scoop an experimental weapon, or catch an experimental wake.

These kind of missions could be called up as you enter a system or a poi, the salvage contact could say "we've lost someone here" or "we've heard a pirate has a new drive near here" and we get to pursue it I we want to.

Another tab isn't going to change anything and without some kind of devs placeholder ideas it can take more wind out of our sails.

The current S&R implementation is a bit of a head-scratcher, I agree. I hope it gets some serious fleshing out. I can only assume that it'll become more meaningful as 2.4 progresses. I hope so anyway. :)

It doesn't even need "serious fleshing out", just a little bit of minor fleshing out. Raise the payouts to make salvage much more valuable and worth the player's time to collect and return. That alone would do wonders and almost make S&R a career of sorts. Now, allow mining lasers to salvage scrap and materials from ship debris. The mining lasers are already in the game, and you can use them on asteroids to mine "loot". Code ship debris into effectively "reskinned" asteroid class objects with new loot tables; instead of dropping ores they drop scrap metal and components. Now the lasers interact with ship debris just like they do with asteroids. All of the mechanics are already in the game, all of the art exists, the "loot" is already in the game, the code is there it just needs to be utilized in a new manner.

There you go. Salvage as a basic but worthwhile career path. From a new feature point of view it's a softball which adds huge amounts of value and potential for players. Other features and improvements can be added from there but it's a great foundation that should be fairly easy to implement.

I am not too worried. I think they will ramp it up in the future. You know, like when the Thargoids start wiping out whole systems. Imagine how crazy things will get then.

I'll start out by saying I love the fact that something has been implemented - that salvage items are no longer illegal, but rather turned in to a specific contact.

The rewards as they stand right now are pretty pathetic though. A straight 1000% increase would be completely in line here.

But what I'd really love to see come from this, and feel free to disagree, but you might find it hard:

A tiered reward system, that doles out:

At the first Tier, a Stylized Search and Rescue Ship ID Plate.
At the second Tier, a Stylized Search and Rescue Ship Name Plate.
At the third Tier, a Stylized Search and Rescue Decal (International Red Cross anyone?)
At the Fourth Tier, another Stylized Search and Rescue Decal (perhaps a Caduceus?)
At the Fourth Tier, a final Stylized Search and Rescue Decal (SAR logo of some sort)
At the Fifth Tier, a nice Search and Rescue Paint job.
At the final Tier, a Search and Rescue body kit - a light bar for your S&R ship.

No other way to get these items, except to participate in Search and Rescue.

That would really make S&R a worthwhile undertaking, rewarding in its own unique way.

Everything in this game is a placeholder. I'm so sick of it.

You're a placeholder :)

This idea is way too good to be implemented.

And, besides, you can't unlock any cosmetics from within the game, only through the store. For some weird reason.

When even a fanboi say that is very strange to see somethin implemented by Fdev....

Have you had some thoughts about that 1000% is 20X this means that ONE escape pod will be sitting at 100k... we will have the escape-pod bonanza ... get rich fast HHAHAHAA...

You're a placeholder :)

They will sell it.. like hell they will give away things they can sell you for dollars ;)

ON THE OTHER HAND....

I'll tell what i think about it.. we already have the data link scan on ships... MAYBE (only maybe) we can start having some actual use for it... scan the escape pod. find out the name of the individual. system where he belongs.AND if he is wanted in this system.

Use a KWS and see if he is wanted elsewhere.

Now, things get interesting.

You can be looking into a VIP, Criminal and a random dude.

While for some people he is just a regular dude.

For other he might worth a fortune.

Lets say if you deliver him back to his faction... they could pay you the so called 100k for him (or even more if he is a VIP!)

If he is wanted it gets even more interesting... You could be looking at a NICE bounty for delivering him alive... OR a great payout for handling back to their faction...
(imagine having this situation... finding a wanted escapepod, and on your way to deliver him for the authorities where he is wanted... and in the middle of the way you receive a message of their faction saying that they intercepted the KWS and they want him back fox X price...If you refuse they send an pirate/bounty hunter against you... Looks hell of fun right?! )

But you always get the minimal payout of releasing to any station for a regular price...

Looks MUCH more interesting right?!

I like this. I like this a lot.

Have you noticed that damaged escape pods are worth more than undamaged ones ?

So before you scoop one, rough it up a little :D

Misspelled fanboy? Sorry, I don't accept internet-speak as a form of language. And I'm less than certain what you're actually trying to say here, so if you want to explain, I'll read. Otherwise...

Yes, they could potentially sell this, but they have given away some cosmetics as well - Got a pair of Aviator glasses? I bet you do.
How about some random Power decals?
Or a Military Flight Suit pack?

If not, pay a visit to the store and grab yourself some freebies.

Other things have been given away as well - I've got a Cannon decal on my ship for the work I did during the Cannon CG. I've got a Beta Tester decal for participating in the first open beta. And a 2.4 beta test decal for participating in the second AND a Chrome Eagle paint job that was also a CG award. So we know it IS within the realm of doable.

The decals and lightbar might be entirely new items, but the paint job already exists - the Rescue # ships already use it. So nothing new to create there.
And by NOT selling these items, but making them available ONLY by participating, it encourages a type of game play, and rewards it with something more than just credits or otherwise meaningless titles.

You wind up with something to show for your efforts, and that's not a bad thing - in fact, quite the opposite.

Yeah I'm hoping it's a first step towards something more involved. There'd been mutterings (can't say outcry) about what to do with escape pods and such - before you just sold them on the black market which was a little ominous if you're role-playing a nice CMDR...

I use it a bit if I come across pods etc while I'm doing a black box mission or collecting materials, but not as "thing" in itself - more money would be nice!

Anyone know if it affects the BGS much?

We've been saying things are nice first step since beta...only instead of taking additional steps forward we're still stuck at that first step on so many things when it comes to gameplay...

When I saw search and rescue I was hoping for... Well search and rescue

I was expecting to open it. Find a mission with a last seen
Go there and start chasing bread crumbs and rescue someone!
Fuel ratting or searching for a crashed ship.

What I didn't expect was a reskinned commodity page.

Sweet Nora, it says everything that players can come up with better ideas with barely a moment's thought.. The core concept is great, but the current implementation and reward structure is atrocious.

Everyone and their dog can come up with cool ideas. Implementing them using the available resources is the skill. I can sit and imagine the awrsomest game on the planet, dont make me the awesomest dev on the planet. :)

Yeah, seems like one dev got an hour or two, no idea why they even did it. Maybe it'll tie in with something down the line, but even then might as well have added the whome thing later.

Given the hyperinflation in the galaxy through all the credit farming sites of the last couple of years, S&R doesn't need to be mega money to make it interesting yet contributing to the credit flood, it could be a mega-reputation activity instead? So you want to rep up with a faction to get in on their juicy missions or permits or whatever, go be the search and rescue guy for a while, your heroic actions will see you rapidly ascend in their esteem as you become a legendary saviour of otherwise lost souls in the void.
