Where is the post-FX communication?

... so I will be cheeky and ask for your patience on this a little further on this.

Frontier Expo covered a lot that we wanted to talk about and while we want to go into more details about the features announced it's only been a couple of weeks since the expo.

Surprising it has only been as short a time as that ..... for young players, it may be a significant chunk of their life (he he ... joke only) ... but for those like me who are way too old and have flight-assist zimmer frames, it's a case of forgetting things that happened that long ago.

Speaking of which, is that one ever going to be uploaded? I'd love to see it.

This was not actually recorded for reasons unknown to me (possibly due to tech setup requirements and cost, but that's a guess) so we don't have a high quality version of this available. There might be some players that recorded it, but this isn't something we'd be able to upload.

@Dale:

I really miss the Pic of the Week, can these new spanky livestreams have one or two slipped in with the art guys / Sandro / elder gods talking about it?

The design/dev team are keen on taking community feedback and incorporating that into the features. We want to do this in a very targeted and meaningful way that will give the most impact to the dev team and allow for that feedback loop to be really effective.

Design sessions.
Each one functions like one of the DDF's.

1. You guys present the feature you want to implement.
2. We tear it to pieces. :D

Keep it heavily modded to ensure as constructive discussion as possible.
Take what you need from the session. Refine it. Release a second and final version.
Listen to feedback, general tones etc. Make changes where possible. Release in BETA.

Optional: Whilst in BETA, open another design session for something else.

Rinse and repeat.

Snip...

Thank you very much for the response, Dale. You are a shining example of the kind of communication most of us enjoy from Frontier.

Good or bad, news is a welcome sign of life when things get very quiet. I think this is one of those times; as 2.4 is a long-haul update spanning months and the next major update is sometime Q1 2018, it's hard not to feel like we're in a holding pattern. Hearing from you all about the game (not the community or store additions/sales, etc.) is a great way to fill those gaps when content seems sparse.

I apologise if what I said set the wrong expectation. It's possible I wasn't clear enough with my communication there, and that's my bad! We definitely don't want people jumping to conclusions and being expectant without cause, but at the same time we want to let you know that we want to create this awesome content to give you insights into what's coming. It's not been forgotten or abandoned, it just has to be done in line with what the development team do, as it requires a lot of their time too.

So... the plan was, and still is, to have deep-dive livestreams to go into various parts of ED's. Logistics of making this happen need to balance with the needs of the development team to work on the game...... These kinds of talks and presentations take a solid chunk of time, so we have to be careful not to do this at critical times for the team(s) involved.

We've still got content coming over the 2.4 period. There will be some weeks that are busier than others so I will be cheeky and ask for your patience on this a little further on this. [big grin] As ever, we'll keep you updated on the latest happenings through our usual channels; here on the forums, livestreams, social media, or if you're in shouting distance we'll do that too!
Good stuff, looking forward to them! Both from the personal interest standpoint, and hopefully they'll quiet down some of the disillusioned that have begun raising their voices again ;)

As an example, the "How to make a Galaxy" talk at FX by Ant Ross is a great one - especially since it's highly requested from the community - looking at how Stellar Forge was made.
Is there any sign as to when this will be uploaded to the ED Youtube channel? I know many CMDRs who want to see it! Damn

This makes me sad.

Very sad.

I was mere feet from the door when we got turned away. T_T

Dale, is there any possibility of Dev Updates making a return? As an Aussie, Friday quickly became my favourite day of the week-between early 2015 & mid-2016-because it meant a new Dev Update and, more importantly, a thread in which one of the developers (usually Michael Brookes back then) was more than happy to discuss stuff from within the game. The Updates didn't have to even reveal anything *new*, just give a bit of insight into the thinking behind existing game features.

Please suggest to the Devs that they bring back this amazing feature to the forums!

I want sufficient evidence for the grand jury to indite the persons who greenlighted Power Play and Engineers. :)

The features themselves are fine, it's just that the current implementation is horribly under-developed. Tying Power Play into the BGS & Faction Influence (the latter via a shared mission system) would solve 95% of the issues with that feature. Expanding favours & allowing players to swap out materials to vary upgrade rolls would make Engineers a great feature too.

Thanks Dale - this is all we've really asked for - feedback that the forums do serve a purpose other than my ranting *wink* and that FDev want to be more engaged with the players and keeping us better informed, instead of the speculations that just damages confidence in the game.

This is how to maintain confidence and I'm relieved FDev have finally taken this on board.

You're not in the clear yet but this is a great step in the right direction, now FDev needs to make good on thier word, CONSISTENTLY.

I'm not sure this will work TBH - the DDF was largely a failure if uptake of the game decisions taken from it is any indication .

It also adds an extra amount of time to the design process, and in the DDF days this was much less of a factor than now and they had a larger team working on the game than they do currently.

Maybe down the line I'll be proven wrong, but so far there's almost no game content that follows what was outlined in the DDF. Yes I understand things change according to limitations, but there's extremely few things that are even similar.

I'm not trying to criticise FDev (for once) but in this case their support of, and track record for, Developer / forum co-designed content is almost non existent as far as evidence suggests.

It was a real missed opportunity imho.

Not too late though FDev !!! :)

Noooooo! This one was packed out when I arrived and I missed it. Gutted!

Could Frontier create a 2nd YouTube channel for less "official" videos and upload the low quality version, perhaps. The community would love you for it..

The difference would be that Frontier need to actually change their design based on user feedback and then implement everything listed. Not have this long post about a feature, and then implement bare-bones.

It also adds an extra amount of time to the design process, and in the DDF days this was much less of a factor than now
If it pays off in the form of a fleshed-out feature that people actually want and can enjoy then I'm okay extending the development time.

and they had a larger team working on the game than they do currently.
There is no evidence for this; in fact, a statement made at the Expo by Frontier completely contradicts it.

See my first response. Frontier will HAVE TO actually implement the changes if my suggestion is to work. Taking in user feedback, then doing your own thing anyway .. well, we've seen what that results into. :)

True, but it doesn't negative the effectiveness of an open thread, with healthy debate from the people who play the game.
Yes, the devs likely play it .. but they don't experience it the same way we do, thus they don't consider things we do .. this is evident across all software development. My team and I have been surprised by some of the user requests for new features/changes to our apps; changes/features that we'd never even thought of.. simply because we don't experience/use the app the same way as our clients.

It was a real missed opportunity imho.
100%

Seconded, thirded and fourthed... I don't care if it's low res, I'm just really interested in seeing how Stellar Forge works.

Re: this talk and the livestream earlier in the week, I asked Ed if that talk could be made available and he did say that, although the quality wasn't good enough (I didn't realise it hadn't been recorded), they were planning on getting Ant to re-record it so that there would be a version they could make available. Ed also went on to say that they were hoping to having regular in-depth "Ted Talk" style streams which they would intersperse with the usual more light hearted ones (perhaps on a fortnightly basis?).

Like a lot of people I'm massively looking forward to these so keep us posted Dale. I appreciate you guys are busy but the OP is right, fairly strong promises about more communication from FD were made at the Expo and I know it hasn't been that long (4 weeks?) but so far it's been pretty quiet!
