So, how much realism is too much realism for Elite: Dangerous?

You know that space-time compression is probably possible right? So frameshift drive might be possible.

I'm no stranger to physics nor fringe-physics, so yea. On mathematical basis, doable, whenever. To apply that to physical world tho, now, that's a heck of a hurdle to accomplish.

1300 years is a hellova lot of time. Besides we are hitting technological singularity before 2100 so why the hell not?

The game should revolve around the player not the player revolvling around the game, especially in an Open-World, Playground-Style type game.

That one sentence there explains all that is wrong with E.D.

FDev think it's about them. It's not. It's about the players.

No, we won't, unless we get rid of Microsoft. They've been a hindrance, with Intel, from since 80's.

AI does not depend on runnin on windows hopefully. Besides we are not far from general AI and they will create superAI very quickly and then it's just few hours till singularity! PROFIT! Or death? Anyway I want IRL space travel so i'm all for super intelligent AI.

Besides we all know that any AI from microsoft would be superracist xenophobe :D

Whas Microsoft to do anythign with technological singualrity? Humans won't make it happen.

My view has always been that with any sci-fi or fantasy creation it’s about believability rather than realism.

Totally agree with this. Internal consistency aids in suspension of disbelief and the appearance of a "realistic" universe. This is to a certain extent lacking in Elite, some things are close to realistic while others are glaringly gamey - and I can't really see the gameplay justification for either choice in many cases.

Personally I feel Elite could benefit from a story/art director that had creative control of in game lore and mechanics. Want to add a new game mechanic? Make sure it is consistent with the rest of the game world.

Singularity hinges tho on whether the AI is "human" or otherwise. If it's "human", well, we know how Terminator goes ... If it's not "human", well, then only the impossible is the limit (if even that) :D

To hell with all of this. We are simulated last survivors of humanity running on extremely low temperature low power simulation running trillions times slower than our percieved realtime living off some blackhole and travelling to next universe to scavange for usable mass to use as a fuel. Screw reality.

While you were reading this post we might have travelled 190 258 751 902 LY. :)

IMO the biggest unrealistic feature in ED is space itself. It's not affected by relativity as you can tell by the ease of travelling faster than 1c. However, it's not newtonian either; if it was, there would be no limit on your top speed as you'd be able to accelerate forever. The best model I can think of is that it's newtonian but with space filled by an atmosphere which causes friction. Your ship's top speed is then the speed at which the frictional force equals the thrust your ship can produce. (This atmosphere also transmits sound so you can hear other ships' engine noises).

This isn't a complaint; I think it's more important for ED to be fun than for it to be accurate. Under relativity, speeds faster than 1c would be impossible so getting around even the bubble would take many lifetimes. For newtonian physics combat would probably never occur as you'd never catch another ship, and docking would be a pain.

But you did vote, so you accepted the social contract to accept the out come.

This whole, the losing sides of votes never letting go, and getting upset with not getting their way.

Yes we get it, voting only works when you win, if you lose it is broken and wrong and not fair, blah blah blah.
Good job at taking me completely out of context.
