Where have they all gone?

There's a good sized pool of players (certainly former Alphas) who play in the open game... I've only heard of one or two players so far who've played wholly in the solo arena... They are out there... Honest!

I've played exclusively in MP since B1 release and have seen many players, especially around Aulin and Eranin. Never yet witnessed any unprovoked hostilities not in keeping with the rules or spirit of the game.

Of course not! It's just that a few more... sensitive... souls in this forum would have people believe Open group is full of rabid space cannibals. ;)

I'm not entirely sure I agree. I suspect if performance issues were equal, more would move from solo to multi player.

I've been trying solo too, but often for stability reasons. And I do find that an NPC only world feels rather sterile. Despite the 'problems' that real human interaction can bring in-game, it also adds a huge dimension that I suspect will ultimately suck in a larger fraction than 2/3.

I think Pesick's post is true, that poll was taken months ago; before 'multiplayer' had been implimented. So netcode hadn't become an issue.

1/3 is accurate.

I can only assume that there must be something wrong with the game for some of us, I for one have never seen the systems so busy with online players, I can't understand why some of you are not seeing them. (maybe time of day).

Having said that I also don't understand why some of us are so obsessed with being able to pick on player traders? there are plenty of NPC traders out there too, or is it just about being able to annoy someone? you should get used to it, because when we get 400 billion systems we will be so spread thin you may be lucky to see a player trader.

He did say B1; not Public Beta. This I can believe, it's FD's plan...; less sarcasm Meritz.

I am playing in the all group in and around the starter systems. I have seen plenty of players in SC but only a few at stations.

No player has shot at me yet but that is the least of my concerns as exiting though the slot appears to give me more issues than entry, landing and NPC combat.

Timezone, the actual day (weekdays not everyone has time), public holidays, there could be many reasons why the playerbase is not even. But some like to pull the carebear out of the closet because there's no way there's any other reason there's no one around. ;)

Nah. People keep repeating this argument either because they're misinformed or because they wish this to be a lonely game like the previous Elites. Only a tiny fraction of those 400 billion systems will have stations. Obviously a number of explorers will venture away from civilization, but the rest will remain in the populated bubble. Traders, mission runners, pirates, bounty hunters have no business in empty space.

Anyway, we shot a decent numbers ships near Freeport yesterday and from that experience I can tell you this:
1. Pirating NPC traders is brainlessly easy and quite profitable. They're dumb and helpless. Most of the time they have nothing, but once in a time they drop you 16-ish personal weapons, sometimes even gold. You can get yourself a viper in a couple hours.
2. Pirating players is a bit more challenging. They run, sometimes try to shoot back, generally make things a bit more difficult;) There is never time to talk about ransom. If you try to be nice and ask, they will frameshift away or hide inside the station. Eventually you either have to blow them up or let them go, so make sure they have big money in their cargo hold, otherwise it's a waste of time. Currently not many players carry anything valuable in non-negligible quantities. It should get better in a few days when there's more Lakon 6s and the first 9s/Anacondas start popping up.

well whilst I agree that maybe not every system will have a space port I would be surprised if a huge number didn't, and you would get the same effect.

the numbers I have heard. (And I COULD be wrong) is that there will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 100k settled human systems. yes, 100k is a tiny fraction of 100 billion , but 100k isn't a small number either.

I don't have proof with me now, but I think the number is much smaller. Stations are made of prefabs, but they're not generated. A human needs to do some work to set it up (at least pick the variant, placement, set up market, etc). Just imagine the developers setting stations in 100k places, let it be a symbolic 1h of dev work per station. 35 years working 8 hours straight every day;)

There is a new function to use- send a distress beacon.
Il guess the purpose of that is to ask for help if you run out of fuel but it could also be used as a pirate tactic.
Have anyone tried it out yet and lured some helpful player to it?

Are you sure about this? I got the impression stations were generated by the background simulation!

Funny how when people get tools to fight griefers there is an endless rain of whining tears.

I'm playing multiplayer and nobody actually shot me. It's possible the smell of my fish cargo is a strong repellent.

that said, the day I take a big monetary risk in doing something ingame, I'll make sure to play solo, there is no way some guy with lot more playtime than me will decide I should lose something just because he wants it and has a better combat ship. Deal with it, psychos.

Maybe I've just not been paying attention but I've seen approximately zero threads complaining about griefing since Standard Beta began.

Are the security services and station defences that effective?

We now have the opposite problem - you rarely meet other players outside supercruise.
