i7 8700K looking good!

Got OBS working again, so uploading.

Sadly I realised only after that CPUID doesn't update when it's out of focus, certainly didn't when I checked the vid.
I just used taskmanager to grab CPU so got some graphs on that.

Upgrade from... an i7 that has cost the same before? Because that's what I mean: Upgrading to a new model in the same price category seems to be completely unneeded even after many years. :/

Some games are virtually only GPU depending, but strategy games for example, tend to use a lot the CPU.

Elite is the most demanding VR game I have ever tested.

I cranked literally every setting in Lone Echo, and added Supersampling of 2.0, and it still played fine, and looked awesome....

So it is quite sad to spend €1500 to replace what is already a very capable pc.
Well, I shall put the 980ti back into and it shall still remain a very capable pc.

Been struggling with this mostly for today, and it's been an odd one since it didn't trigger all the time, only on occasion, but when it did it was terrible.
Posted a thread on it.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...in-lots-of-visual-weirdness-with-probable-fix
After this performance has been so good it's almost scary, but in a RES and at Obsidian Orbital with players in local it still dropped a fair bit into ASW.
But also after this 'fix', in essence disabling the game mode DVR function, when ASW has triggered it's been a lot less obvious and with less artefacts than before.

Have managed to hit a RES and apart from the settlement I launched from, my GPU stayed under 50%, mostly <35% even.
According to Core Temp CPU where staying at around 50-60% but I suspect this might be an error on my side, and I should have found a monitor more thread aware.
Anyhoo, if I was running 90fps and being close to 55% utilisation on the GPU, something would bump up CPU eventually and that throttled down both GPU and CPU.

The kit should arrive tomorrow here's hoping for a nice build :)

So first night with Rift on running my new Coffee lake 8700K and z370 MoBo. simple overclock by 40% to 5.89Mhz done by the tweaker tool. I have no special knowledge on overclocking so left it all to the 5 step tweaker tool.

So i tun SS at 1.00 and HMD at 2.00, FXAA, No AO, and most other things at High. First off i am NOT an avid must have 90FPS at all cost and at all times, and with my settings i would not get this even with my gear! I tried to do this when i first got the Rift in April, but quickly gave up as i was Sooooo confused.

Instead i see what i like, and i pump up the settings till it stops being smooth and enjoyable. I don't even look at what my FPS is doing, if my session is twitchy and jerky i lower settings a notch.

Anyhows, last night i was able pump up my settings to Shadows Ultra, the 3 terrain settings at the bottom all on Ultra, model draw distance tweaked right up, and the image was steady, sharp (Rift Sharp), no jumps, no dropped frames.

So in a basic humble non technical, sort of way i HIGHLY recommend the 8700k Coffee lake upgrade.

My Rig:

Asus Maximus Hero X
Intel 8700k Overclocked to 5.1Mhz (Near as dammit)
Gigabyte Aorus 1080Ti Extreme (No over clocking as this won't take it and just crashes, but running at out of box OC)
Samsung 960Pro1Tb M.2 for OS and all things ED
Samsung 960Evo 1Tb M.2 for everything not ED related
Crucial 1Tb SSD Backup drive
Custom Water loop with 1x 360 Rad and 1x 240 rad cooling CPU and GPU. Temps never go above 53c
Corsair HAF500P Case (This is certainly NOT a HAF case as the airflow is horribly restricted by the perspex front and top. Had to mod the top to allow hot exhaust air to get out the case.)

Hey Wasp0 what system you coming from. I’m Sitting on a 6700k and I know it should not be worth it to upgrade, but it’s itching 

Yes thats what i upgraded from, the second hand market in the 6700k's is still pretty good so that went for £255, and along with the Z170 MoBo, so in theory the 8700K and z370 only cost me £270 ish. So in my simple mind the upgrade was well worth it.

Overall, i have only tested the 8700k in ED, Monitor and rift and COD WW2 and both are noticeably better, especially Elite in the rift.

Does it affect the map performance?

Hi fellow ED VR lovers!

I know there are a few of us in here that are looking to upgrade our CPUs in an effort to improve our VR experience and it looks like our prayers may have been answered!

This really looks very promising indeed... enjoy :)

Not even heard of this CPU.... So unfortunately I wouldn't be able to run that new 8700K in my existing system in place of my old I7-4790 Devils Canyon? Shame!

But from a quick look at a few benchmarks it appears in games the difference isn't huge, and I guess that's not suprising as the GPU would typically be king there on any sort of significant resolution/detail level.

ps: I can't believe I've had this 4790 now for like 3yrs or more, and, 1) nothing seems to tax it (it's rarely even 50% in use), 2) I bought it for less than it's cost since & now!

I am led to believe from learned cmdrs on this very forum that ED is demanding on the CPU as well as the GPU, so this is what prompted me to upgrade, and IMHO judging from last nights 4 hour game time, it seemed to make quite a difference.

Hmmm... I rarely see any game even use 50% of my old 4790k ;)

Here's my diag screen while ED has been running for a few mins with me sitting on a launch pad in Jameson (a while back):-

Try this in an ice ring Haz res with other cmdrs! bet you processor works a bit harder then.

Got an example of such a Haz res?

Why would other CMDRs affect CPU usage (to any degree)? Note: I suspect my previous example had numerous?

There are so many variables that affect performance of this game. I believe it is not possible to get consistent results. One day it feels like ASW kicks in 10% of the time. The next day it is 50%.
Sometimes an instance with 10 other CMDRs is no problem. The next day 4 CMDRs and frames drop. ...

I monitor with HWinfo64 and my 7700K peaks at 85% (on one core).

As i said in my post.... "I am led to believe from other learned cmdrs on this forum"...............................You will have to ask them for a detailed reasoning behind why ED likes a nice meaty CPU. The chap to ask is TorTorden, as he is most knowledgeable in these sorts of things and has given detailed reasoning behind his statements.

My Experience is that i found in Rift it gave me more scoop to raise my settings with out stutter or loss of frames or loss of screen enjoyment. As i am not a techie, i can't give you the tech answer you demand, but from a non tech mouth, my experience is extremely positive!

Well, if someone wants to give me an location to try, I'd be happy to blow the dust off the game and try it as regards my creeking old 4790K :)

Thanks, but I can't see a specific location (icy haz res) to try. What I don't want to do it fly around for two hours looking for somewhere. If someone can recommend a location that would be really useful. I'd then try it on my monitor (1920x1200) and on my Oculus and see how the CPU behaves generally...
