i7 8700K looking good!

Looking good for a station. I'm using an Corsair H110 water block. I've set my fans to come on at 40. My CPU sits at about 45 in a station and the fans are slightly above idle.

I have a rather mediocre medium tower Corsair case.

I just OC'd the thing because of Cities Skylines... 3.5GHz → 4.1GHz gives a decent 15-20% boost to frame rates since that program is heavily CPU bound.

Hey Grax long time o/

Just got the new i7 8700k up in a sort of running mode, still to get going in ED yet.

It posts at least even though I had to actually dismantle parts of the MOBO to get the cooler in.
Still got the oculus setup and my Hotas and of course, more tweaking etc etc.

Yes thats what i upgraded from, the second hand market in the 6700k's is still pretty good so that went for £255, and along with the Z170 MoBo, so in theory the 8700K and z370 only cost me £270 ish. So in my simple mind the upgrade was well worth it.

Overall, i have only tested the 8700k in ED, Monitor and rift and COD WW2 and both are noticeably better, especially Elite in the rift.

Arr why did I ask. I do not need to upgrade, I do not need to upgrade, I do not need to upgrade :)

Yes, YES YOU DO!!

Just do it! An early Christmas present to yourself. You know you have worked hard this year, sacrificed plenty, so hey you deserve it. YOU KNOW YOU DO, The forum Knows it, even TJ knows it!!

I expect an answer back informing the forum you have placed an order!!

Well, it is up and running at least.

Have managed a run in ED and Pcars, haven't been in a RES yet, intend to try that now.
I haven't really cranked SS yet so still at 1x but so far it has seemed much more stable at 90.

I think there was two cases where it dropped in ASW, when I applied 1.5 HMD Q on a surface, and when I opened the station menu.
On top of hitting 90 more, it seems more immediate.
More responsive in VR.

A touch more REAL..
That's just from my guessing, haven't tried with taking measurements yet.
Well, off to a haz res.

Basically been in a Haz res since last post.

90 stable, I am still using mostly the same settings but so far I only got the ASW stutter for a second in the HAZ zone.

And it was when I got the ding for an i in game message, the Ant hill mob didn't like me killing them so much, (gee shucks I shall stop right).

I still haven't done any overclocking.
Apart from activating the XMP profile for my RAM.

Very Nice my Friend, Very Nice indeed. Good neat Build you did there!
When you played and overclocked let me know your ED Profile settings, i'd like to try out your profile.

Kind Thanks
and

Still just mostly these. with some tweaks or mis clicks etc.
I have however knocked bloom to high and blur is turned on.
Oddly but blur really improves sense of speed and smooths out some movement.
If you can maintain 90 that is.

Thank you TorTorden

May i ask yourself or any learned Cmdr, what is 'Jet Cones' and what effect happens if on or off, high or Low?

I'm not 100% maybe more like 50%.
But I think those refer to the cones from neutrons and white dwarves. I usually have that at high, but I don't see many of those in my travels.

Oh and I am actually running shadows on ultra.
I definitely had shadows on ultra last night.
Dear lord that was beautiful looking at my ships shadow caressing the asteroids at 90fps.

And another thing, before I would often see a stutter in the rotation of star-ports, asteroids etc.
None of that so far.

Great stuff, the 8700k rocks.

So in your humble opinion, for all the doubters on this thread, you strongly believe that the i7 8700k and associated MoBo, are a definite improvement in VR.

My head is already on the chopping block as i have stated that i firmly believe that it is a large improvement in my VR Experience!

There is no doubt in my mind that it is.
But it didn't exactly suck on my old machine either.
Is it worth the expense.
Probably not for sane people and yes it is most likely like this because FD has coded in some weird solutions

I do however suspect these issues are in deep core code and the very definition of NOT EASY TO FIX, or I'm sure they would have.

I need to setup OBS and I can take a vid or some such, I also have vid from my last RES site debacle with the old rig and same GPU and you should be able to see it throttles quite consistently after a while.
Of course running OBS does add a little strain.

Although that old vid is on my old machine and that machine is on my kitchen counter at the moment, missing a PSU..
I do have one for it, but It's the matter of installing it.

Update:
Can't for the love of me get the MSI afterburner overlay to show up when running VR mode for either Project cars or Elite.
Anyhoo. So I'm doing my old run of grabbing measurements.
UBHVqWB.png

I might have been feeling a bit optimistic so started recording at 60fps, whereas my last one was 30fps, I shall redo the thing cause I am now
Seeing much higher GPU utilisation, that might also be an OBS issue since I am running that through OBS and the NVENC encoder.
With the old CPU I was barely touching 50% except in some odd cases where it would actually go high, but that was honestly just at this one settlement I did a fly over around.
Even supercruising uses 20% more of the gpu now.
Also even now when I'm hammering the cpu and the gpu, when it does trigger ASW, it is so far only for a second or two, it bounces right back again.

I suppose it is time to start overclocking a little bit, on both.
I anyone is interested I can upload the thing to youtube but it is utterly unscientific.
I would only trust it for a general sense of things.

But I am now throttling on the GPU...

That is something we can adjust with settings, unlike CPU dependency.
But I was also recording at 60fps on this and I had better performance last night when I didn't.
But of course be the RNG nature of this game.

I dont think it's that removed from the i7 7700 but the new i5 8600k is going toe to toe with the i7 7700.
More cache and two more cores is a big deal so don't really get the flak people are throwing the eight series cpus.

But I'm not coming from a 7700 or even a 6 series.
I was in the 4790k and I needed a new board anyways.
I was really tempted to get the i7 7700 when I got the 1080ti. but I started googling and the rumors for coffee lake was starting to fly so decided to wait.

So on top of the cpu upgrade, gone from dd3 to ddr4, and the chipset from z97 to z370, granted those are a hasty update and practically a z270 board.

Also sort of lucky I had a inateck USB 3.0 card sitting on the shelf cause it has noticeably less use ports than my old board.

I have a similar trip in the res on the old recorded but I need to install a psu into it before I can get it uploaded.
But to grossly compare. I spent almost half that RES session (same res) in ASW same settings apart from a few things I changed.

I have yet to crank SS. I have tested and just 1.2 hmd-q triggers ASW, granted I was driving around a settlement in maia at the time, one of tbe worst things you can do in game. At 1x I was doing 90 there too.

Personally I don't think as does all that for pq, and if I get 90fps 99.9% like now it's worth it.
Sure I can drop AO. and I am running shadows at ultra I would get a lot of gpu headroom just by dropping those a little.

But it looks so bloody nice.
The things I have added from the old is bloom and blur.
Oddly enough blur helps make things feel more real.

As it happens, i found a nice Ice ring Haz Res last night in Ltt 4487, just north of Shinrarta Dezhra (I know there is no North, but on the GM it is up!!) not sure what planet, but i think the Haz Res showed up on the Nav panel from jumping in on the Star, so less than a 1000Ls away from star. Word of warning, only outpost in system, so if you want to land then no big ships!

Well, I spent about half an hour in this Hazres in 1920x1200 resolution and as I suspected, a) My CPU was being hadly pushed, and indeed my GPU was being hardly pushed? *so confused*

Here's me arriving (note the periods of 0FPS) is me flicking between windows with the game in the background...

And then... With me flying around the Hazres, blowing things up...

And even after 20+ mins... you can see the CPU and GPU are only about 30% used with the GPU even just passively cooling (no fan on)!

It is a VR issue. I never had any problems before even on my triple monitor set up. What people some people have noticed is there are instances of very high CPU use and the GPU isn't at 100% but the headset can't maintain 90FPS. So something is holding back the GPU (what exactly is proving a bit elusive) but it looks the 8700K/Chipset/RAM is brute forcing its way out of it. Rendering two separate 1080x1200 images at 90FPS + positional tracking etc seems to be quite a task. My i5 4670K is more than enough for playing on a monitor.
