A nice problem to have...

Python, FGS, or FDL. With FDL being the best "big" small-fighter-like. Where you'll start to have fun with the medium-ship stage of the game.

Congrats. Like others have said, the Sol permit is really pretty easy to get so might as well grab that. I assume you already have the Sirius permit. If you're really bored, get the Van Mannen's Star permit too. Why not?

The only permits I have are Alioth (which I got mainly to buy my Asp cheap), and now Founders World of course. What's in Sirius?

There's really a lot of love for the Python in this thread. General consensus seems to be that it's not great straight out of the shop but it can be turned into something special. Is that a fair assessment Python owners?

One of the Engineers, Marco Qwent. He does grade 4 power plants and grade 3 distributors. he's also the main reason that lots of us have a nervous tic when we hear the phrase 'modular terminals' :)

Pretty much spot on I'd say. Anaconda is the same, if not more so.

Ah, thanks. I was wondering what the whole 'Modular Terminals' thing was about. :D

I should probably unlock more engineers, I only have McQuinn, Farseer & Martuuk. There's another job for my list.

Qwent's worth getting because depsite the fact that the services he provides are a bit 'meh', he's required in order to unlock Palin. And you want Palin because he does grade 5 Dirty Drive tuning.

Edit: Inara has a nice list of the Engineers, their unlock requirements, and their unlock-path to other Engineers.

A little update for those interested.

I've now got my Sol permit. It's nice to be able to visit the home system (and on PS4 you get a trophy for it - not that I avidly collect them, but still...). The only really disappointing thing about Sol was how broken some of the planet textures are. Earth looks like a kid's painting, Mars is okay until you get close and then the LoD pops all over the place, as it does on Earth's moon and some of the outer moons too. I won't bang on about it because it's a known issue and has been reported, but it's a shame FDev can't sort out the 'Cradle of Humanity' so that it looks as impressive as some of the areas of the galaxy I saw while I was out exploring for my Elite rank.

I haven't bought a new ship yet. I parked my Asp (*ahem*) and went back to my Cobra Mk III to do the Fed ranking missions which was actually really fun and reminded me how nimble and fast it is.

I've also now got the Sirius permit and have added Qwent to my list of engineers but I've not unlocked him yet - and yes, I see what people mean about Modular Terminals now. *sigh*

Currently I'm sat at Jameson Memorial looking at the Python in the lovely discounted shipyard - under 50 mil Cr at Jameson - and I've recently been looking around at a few multi-role/mission builds for it too.

However... it looks like the only good way to get the modular terminals for Qwent right now is to do passenger missions, which I've never tried before (and am not particularly interested in). Is a Python going to be useful for that? I mean...you know... not a fantastic jump range, and you don't really see Python passenger builds shared about. As I don't intend doing passenger missions after I unlock Qwent I don't want to buy a dedicated passenger ship, so should I try refitting my long-range Asp X for passengers? Decisions, decisions...

[edit] Anyone noticing my sig will see that another side effect of the Fed ranking was getting my trade rank up to Merchant, which was cool seeing as I never actively play as a trader otherwise.

Did they really do that? Ugh. The Python is really, pretty good for almost everything, but expensive. Might also take a look at the Dolphin though. It's decent for the price and fun to fly.

Yes. Yes, they did.

I think a lot of people thought Modular Terminals as mission rewards had just disappeared completely, and they have if you only look at the regular mission boards, but if you go to the separate passenger lounge the missions there still award MTs. The problem is for players who don't normally do passenger missions and/or don't have passenger cabins in their ship there's no reason to ever even look in the passenger lounge.

A lot of the unlocking process seems to be aimed at getting the player to try different things in the game, what you describe is in line with that concept. It's changed since it did it though.

Try different things?? DIFFERENT THINGS?!?!

Do FDev know their player base?....old dads...OLD DADS...the age of trying new things is long behind me...I know what I like and I like what I bl**dy well know (spoken in thick Yorkshire accent) :p

It reminds me of the Dr.Pepper ads....'try it you might just like it' or 'what's the worst that could happen?'

And like the aforementioned soft drink...no, I don't like it.

So modular terminals...passenger missions....ok i'll give it a go.....'what's the worst that could happen?' ;)

One more update to this thread, possibly my last given the purpose of the initial post.

Here is the latest addition to my fleet:

A-rated where it counts and engineered for a jump range between 20-28 LY (depending on internal module configuration). Plenty of available power and reasonably low heat profile, despite a good A-rated shield & boosters and my usual favourite weapon combo of beams & MCs. Lots of internal space to swap modules around for multiple roles. Currently fitted with three flavours of cabins while I do passenger missions to get Mr Qwent his @?$&%! Modular Terminals!

Thanks for all your input!

Should I go for a combat ship and another Elite rank? (I don't do multi-player so combat would be PvE) Or should I do some Federation ranking so I can visit Sol - and what would be the best ship for that? ...or is there one that would work for both?

It's been a while since I've said this...

I wouldn't recommend artificially escalating your combat rank.

It's pretty simple to sit in a RES/CNB and blast stuff to increase your combat rank.
The only real limitation is how determined you are.
If you're prepared to spend a solid week blasting away at Eagles, Adders and Cobras, you will reach combat Elite.

The problem is, the game spawns NPCs in accordance with your combat rank so once you're Elite you'll constantly find yourself being attacked by the most powerful NPCs in the game.

Let's say you're currently a combat Novice or, perhaps, Competent.
You're flying your AspX, you take on a cargo mission, you get interdicted and the attackers will be, perhaps, a Competent Cobra and a Novice Viper 3.
If you gain combat Elite, you'll find yourself getting attacked by Deadly Anacondas and Elite FdLs instead, which is probably going to be tough when you're flying an AspX.

If you allow combat rank to increase naturally, you'll be earning credits and gaining experience as you go, which means you'll be able to buy a Python or an Anaconda and equip it properly and that, in turn, means that when your combat rank does increase you'll be flying a ship which is suitable for combat with the sort of NPCs the game sends after you.

If it was me, I'd probably head to Maia in a Cobra, spend an evening doing Palin's missions at Obsidian Orbital, earn a couple of hundred million credits, then go back to Fed' space, buy a Python and use it to start running missions to earn Fed navy rank and get the Sol permit.

If, OTOH, you want to "cheat" then you could simply use one of the current "gold rush" methods (such as Palin's missions or, perhaps, passenger missions) to earn a heap of credits then look for a Fed' system in Famine and complete a heap of donation missions to gain rank quickly.
Not saying you should do that but, if you're desperate to see Sol, the option is there.

I may be wrong, but I think if you buy the python from any of the systems controlled by Li Yong-Rui, you get it with a 15% discount. Also he has the Python available in every single system he controls

I generally see alot of people talking about trade missions and data delivery for boosting trade rank.

I'd like to encourage people to try mining. As stated before, trade ranks depends on the amount of profit you make.

Once you get a ship, I'd recommend a Python but a T-6 is just as capable, outfitted for mining then the only thing you need to worry about are limpets, repairing ship integrity, and buying fuel. Limpets are only about 100cr a piece.

Turn in several million credits a haul, pay only thousands for repairing, refueling, and restocking limpets.

You'll also need to mine to unlock one of the engineers, Selene Jean. I think I spelled her name right.
