How can you be allied with an alien race that you have nothing in common with, know nothing about and cant even communicate with?

I can not communicate with you, so I must kill you. Yep, that about sums up how the indigenous residents of our world were treated when the 'civilised' section of the worlds population went out exploring and claiming new continents.

We come in peace (shoot to kill).

Eh I like the thargoids this hints at cool gameplay that could be coming maybe hunting thargoid hunters and minor factions aligning themselves with thargoids or maybe the thargoids could become the fourth superpower

I am no ally of the Thargoids BUT the case for us conceding the Pleiades nebula to them is pretty solid IMO. Beyond that it becomes ALOT more grey.
If the Thargoids wanted us to leave the Pleiades, they could have just asked us to leave. They didn't, therefore there's no reason to believe that the Thargoids will be satisfied with just that portion of the galaxy.

Just because we didn't manage to translate the messages from their Artifacts and Probes doesn't mean we can start on them. Those messages clearly said (in Thargoid) "Development systems acquired for new out-of-bubble barnacle retail park - Coming Soon! Trespassers will be green glooped!"

the game will be fun again when half of all the stations are burning and unusable, you can no longer purchase brand new ships but have to work with recycled ones that you need to fix up before it even gets to the base level that you used to be able to start out with and thargoid attacks happen so frequently to anyone at any time that travels outside of a few central systems in different pockets of the current bubble. Making trade between the pockets lucrative, but highly risky. Exploration outside of the pockets, valuable and risky. Bounty hunting could be evolved into bug hunting. Fed and Empire ranking can be cancelled and replaced with Aegis ranking. Mining can be extremely highly valuable but risky. And those that suck at the game can still play by sticking to all the basic activities but within the pockets of no alien activity.

Just a fractured and shattered humanity trying to survive under the onslaught of a technologically superior enemy. Leaving room for a sequal to be released where we mount a rebellion from Colonia, which the aliens were unaware of the significance to but it turns out that Jaques had a history with INRA back before he became a bar tender and his space station is actually wrapping a massive alien artifact recovered from that period that seems based on Guardian technology. Having relocated to a remote region, Jaques has spent years deciphering the artifact and developing technology based on it. A select group of pilots (players) have been allowed access to utilize special attack ships to level the playing field in massive capital ship battles that take place in a final defense of the remaining human pockets in the current bubble. Humanity has to hold on because one thing Jaques has discovered from the artifact is that the guardians are returning and they dont like the thargoids and they will arrive in just 1 year from intergalactic space. Allowing Fdev to build up a campaign of massive attacks that push the playerbase to the edge of potential defeat and what's left once the guardians return will dictate the game going forward. Will we be an endangered species under the protection of the guardians surrounded by a hostile peace with the thargoids ? as a powerful ally? somewhere in between?

Ever think they are having as much difficulty understanding us as we do them.... the circumstances are not unprecedented...

Think of the "Darmok" episode of Star Trek TNG, where the alien race language is metaphorical based communication and neither they nor Star Fleet could understand each other until one side made a break through in understanding the other.

Or alternatively, there was that movie Arrivals with those squid like aliens and that strange pictographic language (with a temporal element IIRC) that was incredibly hard for most humans to understand.

There are even more examples than that but I think the above two examples illustrate my point adequately enough.

When attempts to communicate fail, sometimes violence is the only way to indicate desire/intent.

We don't know much about the Thargoids and even less about their intentions but what we do know is:-
  1. Thargoids were driven away or killed as a result of a human made WMD
  2. Thargoids have been absent from (at least human known sections of) the Milkyway for long enough that they became considered the boogie-men of myth and legend
  3. Barnacles started appearing in the past 2 years
  4. Humans started mining these barnacles for valuable materials
  5. Humans started expanding into the barnacle populated regions
  6. Thargoids started appearing in the region of space where barnacles have been seen
  7. Humans became even more interested in the barnacle region
  8. There have been some violent encounters between major faction fleets and the Thargoids
  9. Humans started developing weapons and equipment to combat the Thargoid technology
  10. At least some humans engage in combat with the Thargoids and winning in at least some encounters
  11. Thargoids start attacking newly established human stations in the barnacle region

Whether the Thargoids would have attacked us even without the Barnacle mining and expansion is unknown and pretty moot now. If we back off from the region and let the dust settle rather than press matters further then the least it will do is give us a chance to consolidate our position outside of the region they have an obvious interest in. If they then start encroaching on our space then we might be collectively in a better position to respond and defend ourselves.

We have no inherent right to the Pleiades region nor the resources there, the Thargoids on the other hand may have a stronger claim.

I find it odd that so many people cite the Mycoid virus as an example of our hostility toward a misunderstood Thargoid race but don't seem willing to recall that they were, originally, a deadly threat to the entire inhabited galaxy, during which time they attacked on sight without mercy.

So far, the human race's only crime is being better at killin' stuff than they are.

Let me guess, the plans have been on display in the planning department at Alpha Centauri?

There has been a substantial passage of time between then and now, my point about the Mycoid virus is not that it was an act of hostility but rather a reason for them being apparently absent for so long.

We are led to believe there were 3 factions and the impression I have got is that only ONE of those factions was involved with the previous hostile activities.

Given the passage of time, and seemingly different entities involved it would be the height of hubris and stupidity to assume that the motives and intent of the Thargoids we are encountering now are comparable to the motives and intent of the historic Thargoids. To do so would be comparable to blaming current human governments for the atrocities of their predecessors/ancestors.

I am not saying we should not take all precautions to defend ourselves and react in a measured and appropriate manner, but to respond to attacks that have been constrained to relatively recently established outposts with all out hostility is frankly suicidal and insane IMO. The big picture should always be kept in the frame, and calm reasoning should be the method of approach to the Thargoid situation.

Let me guess, the plans have been on display in the planning department at Alpha Centauri?
Translated from Thargoid, to Jovian, to English, then to Centaurian. ;)

i find those nameplates very interesting.

looks like thargoids have 4 legs, two arms, a big head like id4 aliens, and face-tentacles like Dr. Zoidberg

They have a hard time understanding us, yet they know EXACTLY which stations are run by Aegis.

Bringing back bad memories. The Tamarians(?) of that episode only spoke in metaphors yet all their metaphors were in a language that wasn't metaphors. Definitely not TNG's best.

THESE STARS ARE OURS!

They probably only need to scan for certain tech/ships which Aegis almost certainly have on ALL their stations. Failing that, they could perhaps identify places that the Aegis call home by tracking the vessels that attack them. There are other potential answers to that nugget.
