PvP My experience with the PvP hub - a shout out and kudos

First off, for those who don't know what this is, its a place where you can go for organized PvP fights, where those taking part agree to certain rules (or no rules if participants agree). Its something some people have been saying for a long time the PvPers should do, and it seems to be working well from what I saw. PvPers can get a real challenge fighting each other, and nobody get's ganked/griefed.

Their Discord is here: https://discord.gg/HuShrr3

The main system for battles is San Tu, their group's adopted home system.

So, i joined the Discord, said hi, and headed on down there.

Ok, so yes, the "carebear" Agony went and did some PvP. :D

First off, i'd like to say something about the tone, maturity, salt levels, and toxicty on their Discord, and i'm pleased to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. If anyone has been on the GCI Discord (ostentiably a place for the PvP experts to teach new PvPers the roles), you may have noted that its a salty hellhole, with lots of immature people, and toxic as hell. Such an evironment i've come to associate with several PvP groups (Not all! Cobra Kai are my adopted PvP group and they are really cool guys). So, the PvP Hub was overall friendly and welcoming. Yes, there were some initial digs, not surprising being a forum moderator and an outspoken PvEer, but shout out to Bazinga (admin) for keeping a lid on it. So, a couple of jerks who tried to provoke things, but it soon settled down.

On to the fights. Very simple, plenty of willing people (well, who wouldn't like the chance to kill a moderator?) :D

I had 3 fights.

First two were fairly quick, my Anaconda, which is very nice for PvE, didn't stand a chance against PvP kitted ships (although the beer i'd been drinking might have hastened my demise... pip management? What's pip management? :p). Cost me a cool 40 million, but meh, can make that back within an hour with Palin's missions.

Third fight lasted quite a while with my Bomber CM4. Partially because its small and heavily armoured, and partially i think because my opponent wasn't particularly coordinated to start with (and perhaps giving me an easy time). The mines were fun though, and more than once i crippled my own ship with them.

Two things the experience did highlight for me:

1) A PvE fitted ship is not match for a PvP fitted ship. Still, you can make a PvE ship a PvP ship if you are making a combat ship. It really highlights the problem with balance between combat ships and trade ships (for example) and despite Rinzler's video, i think FD could really do with looking at was of making non-combat ships more survivable vs combat ships.

2) My life is not compatible with PvP. Every 2 minutes i'm getting distracted and called away by kids or wife. Love them to bits, but actually getting 10 minutes straight where i can get a fight is a challenge. And sometimes, the wife calling Agony (not my real name ;)) means, come right now, not in 5 minutes when you are finished. Trying to explain to the person you are in combat against you need to break off doesn't go down well sometimes, and the alternatives - just letting go and dying, or menu exiting, are also unpallatable (menu logging is against the rules of the PvP hub by the way).

So, while it was fun, and i will now consider making a PvP capable ship for the odd battle, its not something i am likely to spend much time doing. However, i would like to thank the people there as a whole, and specifc thanks to:

Bazinga and Rinzler for setting it up (and anyone else who was involved that i'm not aware of).

Yamoto2012, UnReALnan, and willyb321 for the fights.

Finally, ill just post this announcement from ryan_m on the Discord (censored to conform to forum rules).

since there is some confusion about what is and isn't acceptable behavior, we thought we'd make some clarifications.

no one has a right to be here. if you (censored) around, gank, and troll, we'll boot you. simple as that. this place exists to facilitate fair, fun PvP for all participants and we don't want the negativity that PvP tends to bring around every now and then. yeah, we get it, you enjoy ganking, and that is 100% fine, but please don't do it here. go to CGs if you want to gank asps and HD stacked (censored)-fits. there's a new one every thursday, and they have a nice little yellow icon to help you find them. san tu is not meant to replace the organic PvP of CGs, so if that's what you want, you won't find it here. sorry.

the most important rule that needs to be followed here boils down to this: don't be a (censored). if you can't abide that, you don't belong here. "there's no rule against it" is no longer a valid defense, and disruptive stuff will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

please, don't (censored) around and ruin this.

I have not heard of these guys, since I stopped PVPing a long time ago due to time constraints, and the fact there is hardly anyone playing in my timezone. But I will check them out. There are a lot of great PVP guys out there with phenomenal skills, unfortunately they are often drowned out by toxic PVP'ers..

Nice one, will give 'em a look up. I was in Rhea for hours the other day, interdicting every ship and asking them to send their combat pilots to come defend their turf. I pulled 2 dozen, shot at 2 and killed 1, hard as it can be (not always) to find consensual PvP.

Definitely worth checking out, toxicty levels low, and people are mainly just looking for fun PvP. 1 vs 1 or wing battles. Very active.

Well this was pleasant. Tis the season, o7

These guys have the right idea [up]

Might drop by some time just to see what's what :)

Same thoughts from me. I'm not a "meta" gamer really at all (leastwise not for this game), but for those who are, this seems like they're doing it right. Good sportsmanship/fair play and matching wits and skill. Much respect for that. :)

...

If you'll permit me a moment to digress here (as this isn't directly related to my point above – i.e. "meta" vs. "immersion" gaming approaches aside), I use a game controller with round analog stick holes, and as such incur a roughly 19% multi-axes maneuverability handicap. Also, the only Engineer mods I've ever used in the game are the tier 5 FSD range boost ones for exploration efficiency. Along these lines, I don't mod my FOV beyond what you can do in the game and a number of other things to not gain any unfair advantage over others I might happen to come across in Open or otherwise. Likewise, I wouldn't want to let down any team/group of players with the inherent handicaps I play with.

With that all being said, I feel I'm excessively competent at combat and playing the game within my means, and am at least curious how I'd stand up against others with similar play styles. Not trying to brag or anything particular here. Piloting aircraft type ships just comes naturally as I have a lot of real-world experience with hobby model aircraft and of course some virtual sim type experience as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm entirely certain people with more competent knowledge of the PVP meta and decent piloting skills would entirely own me.

For a little context, this is the maiden flight of a scale WW I biplane I built...

My wife recorded this video for me maybe something like 10 years ago and it's my only video on YouTube, so forgive the poor quality, etc.

A lot of the initiatives headed by notorious PvP groups such as SDC seem to be surprisingly loved by the rest of the community...strange that ;)

Kudos to another great PvP initiative, and love to all showing love for PvP here - as long as players don't get the idea this is the only acceptable way to do it.

Haven't joined any PvP initiatives yet, but now I have some time on my hands...perhaps so.

WRONG FORUM! ;)

*splutters coffee*

Well noticed. Shame on you, AA! I mean, putting the thread in Dangerous Discussion...it's almost like you want people to engage with the thread ;)

Hmm, i knew there were competitive PvPers around here. I never yet took the effort to find them, but it might at some time happen that i also head there to shape up a bit, when i find more time.
.
Kudos to them. I very much respect those players who look for a challenge and hone their skills against adequate opponents instead of going seal-clubbing. :)

While its wonderful you tried your hand at PVP.

Do you think maybe it is your personality being a little delicate, rather than CGI being a "Salty hell hole?"

CGI is an extremely active place of learning. Much like Universities!

Nice story Ag. I feel a slight urge brush up the old Vulture to at least modest standard and head over. :)

I have the same life incompatibility issues you have though. I might have to just leave my ship to die, from time to time.

I kind of wish the game itself in its potential was more equitable between my style of play and PVP. It's something I'd rather like to contend with if that were the case. Very much so, actually. Unfortunately, the meta is what it is. [blah]

Well, i know we had out disagreements on reddit, but thanks for the battle. Really helped me understand the shortcomings of my PvE build. Doesn't change my opinion of your incursion into Mobius though ;)

Nah your build could have beaten mine, you just gotta keep distance
