Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Land of Hope and Glory (Dec. 5-11)

Yay! Glad you made it to Dav's Hope, sorry I never managed to hook up on Enceladus, pleased you've successfully completed your circumnavigation. There's a bottle of champagne waiting for you behind the bar at the Planetary Circumnavigation Club!

No need for apologies, my presence in game this last week has been erratic at best. I took advantage of some more free hours this weekend to travel something a bit farther than 100-200 km a day, ended up completing the trip in just another two stages. I also did marginally risk to get stranded into orbit just when I could already see the finish line, but that's material for the Day 10 diary. :D

And now that I had the time for a good dozen of runs and to submit one, I have some messages for some of you.

- To Hanekura Shizuka: this micro-race (and its format in general) is absolutely fun, a criminally underrated one. Also thank you for making me discover Dav's Hope, very convenient for engineering purposes, and I also have great plans for that mountain beside it. [noob]

- To Polly: because of you I've got that song stuck in the void between my ears all day, even my girlfriend had to ask me what the hell I was whistling all day long. Should say I hate you for this but not really, I've always loved that song. [yesnod]

- To Bruski: duuude! Just...duuuude!

Yes it's a great little race. Never thought I'd be discarding chemical manipulators!

I agree about micro-races. We should have more short ones. You didn't know about Dav's? It's the best source for chemical manipulators!

And yes, that song is extremely contagious. You're not the only one who got it stuck inside the head...

It hurts. Badly.

A spate of excellent runs from AkenBosch, racer1, Polly, Stern Winter, and mrdragonraaar have changed the landscape of the Dav's Hope event going into the final day. I'd normally check in more detail to break the tie between Polly and racer1, and will do so later if asked; that said, I'm just a bit exhausted from a Western Meridian exploration.

Remember. Any runs have to be completed by 23:59:59 gametime tonight. Also, if you complete it by 23:59:59 tonight but haven't posted it yet, could you please let me know? Would like to know if there are any entries I'm waiting on before posting final results.

Good luck, and thanks to all for participating!

I'm not going to ask. I'm happy to share the 3:rd place with racer1.

Thanks for a great little race! I'm sorry I couldn't join earlier and I'm grateful that you extended the race. Congratulations everyone, especially to Bruski and Aken, who beat me (again)!

Here's my run:

head to say it but i concede. tried doing some runs tonight and just found i was racing angrily to try and beat people, which meant that a. my times weren't that good (kept spinning out/getting stuck) and b. wasn't having fun.

i think my biggest problem was the corner after the short stretch parallel to the start line going into the homeward stretch. either kept spinning out, losing momentum, or having to go super slowly, losing momentum. Just watched polly's run and that kind of the only thing that really stood out as different, maybe a few really small things that added to a significant difference as well.

all in all, good race people. quite happy to hold the lead for so long and for getting under 50 seconds.

Stay safe among the Stars.

p.s. does anyone know what the whizzing arrow is? just curious.

Are you kidding me....

To AKen: Man... that's not cool. :p I mean it's hot... but not cool.

Also I just tried for an hour, and only managed 45 seconds. :'(

I may also have to concede this one, we'll see.

Are you kidding me....

Last minute-intent to race (again!):

CMDR Cookiehole
Suspension Failure
Hard to pick a favourite Land Racing Vehicle, I guess I'll go with the Koenigsegg One:1

Let's see if I can manage a sub 1 minute time at least :)

Who's kidding you now Bruski? Prepare to be violently slammed in second/third position :D

@cookiehole - Koenigsegg One is a monster machine, but I'll take an Alfa 4C any day :p

COOKIEHOOOOOOOLLLEEE!! :D <3

Btw Hanekura, I have two last minute entries coming in, so I hope you have your stopwatch ready.

You mean the one that does the quarter mile faster if you tow it with a family SUV? :p
Ok, I have to admit, it's really not about straight line speed and it could probably nearly keep up with the One:1 on a narrow race track while being a more likeable car.

Sorry. ;)

I just finished my series of last minute attempts aswell and have to say I really like this format and course layout. Really different from long range SRVing and quite technical.
Probably 80% of my attempts were ruined by spinning out of control, missing materials or simply clipping a wall (I wouldn't have expected the course to be this narrow), but I managed a stopwatch candidate aswell. :)
And then the following run went just perfect. This moment when the terrain actually helps you to get your turns right, the materials just lie around where they're supposed to lie and you spin out of control directly behind the finish line... Not sure how I deserve this.

Sorry again about another last minute entry, but thanks a lot to Hanekura for organizing and hosting!

No you're not ... you bloody love it! :p

Heading off on my office xmas party in about 2hrs time so I'll just say my thanks to Hanekura for an excellent little race and congrat's to cookiehole whoever the eventual winner is now before I start the drunk posts later on.

:D

Any big as* excavator can blow chunks off a marble block, but only a fine chisel in the right hands will carve a David out of it. :p
An Alfa 4C for when you have to get kinky on the racetrack, a Touring Alfa Romeo Disco Volante for the daily fashionable commute. Any. Day. :D

Colour me surprised, who could have guessed that?

The usual, soul crushing, cookiehole experience. :D

Aaand, here's the video of my run:

Am in no fit state to do the split screen video thing today but save those videos and I'll get on it tomorrow.

P.S. fun fact of the day - did you know that Gary Numan is older then Gary Oldman?

Here are my two fastest runs. One might've been 43, but they also started at different points during the second, so... *shrug*

I give all credit to Hell March for inspiration, and select as my last favorite racing land vehicle.... the MAMMOTH TANK!

(I'm not sure that's a racing vehicle...)

And, as we tally the final results... Why am I not surprised.

I am grateful, though, because I would have hated to judge between AkenBosch and Bruski.

Assuming that there are no other entries lurking out there...

There were two spirited runs on the final day of competition - three if you count Bruski's work in its entirety. Bruski produced two remarkable runs; I went with the one that appeared to be the faster (I thought the one with a space in the 43 5 was faster by a hair). What I could not tell was whether Bruski was faster than AkenBosch – which would have made determining a winner awkward.

Fortunately… Cookiehole also came to race. Flying in to Dav's Hope on the last day and racing in the SRV “Suspension Failure”, Cookiehole bested all comers, running the Dav’s Hope course at 23:45 gametime and collecting all materials with a time of 42 seconds.

Congratulations to Cookiehole, and well done all around!

Wow! Congrats to Cookiehole, AkenB, and Bruski! I had made a few more attempts but only managed to shave maybe one second off my original submission, and was convinced the fastest possible time might be about 45 seconds. Good race everyone!
