The engineer grind is horrific, and the single most time consuming and off putting example of grind I've ever experienced in a game. But then I don't play MMOs. If I hadn't been determined to build a
PvP capable ship I wouldn't have pushed through.
The missions while drawn out can be cool, introducing you to certain game mechanics. But the repetitious deliveries are a mind numbing time sink you would expect in a game that sells fast unlocks.
All I can say is once you have done it, it is a lot easier to build your future ships. With the largest sink/grind being waiting in SC for HGE's to spawn.

I think Enderby is actually enjoying the game lately even by his standards, but he's worked for years on that tone and delivery for forum presentation and it could be tough to give up. It's very well refined now. I enjoy it like a finely crafted vinegar.
I really hate to say it but after ~800 hours of game play you really should have learned to google recipe requirements before heading out.
Granted we should be able to pin more than one recipe per engineer. But what can we expect of a game with so much half-assedness in it.

You can light weight your Python and get 40Ly jump range out of it. That will go Sol to Maia in about 10 jumps or as said make a travel DBX which is something like 7 jumps.
Unlocking Elvira or Farseer for G5 FSDs is a big quality of life change, and if you do no other engineering, FSD range is one worth doing.

Use the travel time to your advantage. ADS honk enroute will earn you free credits. Do a bit of DDS in choice planets in the way.
Either that or just ignore the engineers.
It may be incorrect, but the impression I get from OP is one of "must have instant gratification". Just chill. Travel takes time. May as well do something with it...

Isn't this what long-range ships and ship transfers are for?
Whenever I engineer, I just take the Asp E out to the nearest station (whether that's in-system or a neighbour system), transfer the ship I want engineered, engineer it and ship it back. Especially if I need things like Meta Alloys or a rare good, just take that out there and grab it. No need to personally haul low-range ship all over the galaxy.
