"This game is dead or it's going to die!!1"

And yes, this thread serves pretty much no purpose. Which is why it fits right in.
Actually the only purpose threads like this serve is to attract the usual bunch of forum trolls who will tell you that ED:H is:
Dead
Dying
Doomed
Lame
etc.

...... and that life the universe and ED:H has somehow ripped them off and they don't enjoy playing it (in that case they should stop playing and go away from here).

Of late it seems to be more a "The game is dying because it doesn't have as many players as <insert for example call of duty>"

People will say what they say.
As frustrating as it is to hear, since such threads are.....rarely productive.

These threads usually produce around 75 pages of total garbage deployed by whinging trolls.

The only thing depressing there is that humans are mindlessly reproducing at such a rate... :(

As Mr Smith said, humans are a virus...

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realised that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus."

I'd give my thoughts... But honestly, it's too political.

Raw numbers don't necessarily reflect the health of a game, only it's popularity.

Will the steam interfere with the electronics?

Not if it's dry steam!

Will there ever be a time when I should care about something I dont use?

Just because you don't use something doesn't mean you aren't affected by it's existence.

If you'd install Steam for anything, I think it would be for the Steam Sales. Lots of good offers all year round.

I won't use Steam for anything.

If something is a Steam exclusive, I do without.

If something I want is available both on and off Steam, I'll gladly pay a premium to not have the Steam version.

I have 2 accounts, my son 1, none are on Steam, so how many more of us are there that don't use Steam? Stats, the politicians friend, as you can make them say what ever the hell you like and they still don't mean anything

I'm clearly not playing Elite: Dangerous through Steam.

However, Steam's statistics are still quite relevant. You can get an accurate view with a small sample of a whole, and there is little reason to suspect that Steam and non-Steam sales would follow dramatically different patterns.

Mr. Smith apparently didn't understand that the criteria that define 'mammal' and 'virus' don't really have much to do with behavior.

Y'know, if you permenantly erradicate humanity it can no longer complain.
It can no longer destroy everything it comes in contact with, including it's own species.

Maybe the Thargoids have it right...
Destroy all humans.

Besides the StarCitizen apologistic motivated threads, I think these trollish "game is dying" threads is part of the drama and "fun" of the forum "gameplay" (lol) like an ongoing serial tv show. Where wk's and naysayers both have some secret guilty fun. Kind of expect these threads now every cyclic period of a few weeks similar to the steamcharts player activity cycle & "waveform".

And hilarious to read some of the myriad steam player "reviews" lately since the sale. These are probably the latter adopters of the product cycle. Where it's still a wonderful discovery of a game for some and perhaps a regretted gamble for others and for those who have no patience with detailed games. Many short comment-reviews of like so and so bought it for $7 and quit it after a few hours because they couldn't get "anywhere" and got frustrated. I'd agree the tutorials could have been done better or improved, with pop up windows instructing the new player of what key to press to do whichever function.

Game isn't dead becaus of x players playing it. But try playing some other games developed_over_time, try to compare it to ED and then tell me how well ED is doing... I played many games over the last 20 years and ED is one of the worst games developed over time after 1.0 launch I have ever seen. And it won't get any better because developement speed and quality is proportional to active players base (income). You know, these servers and devs working on the game aren't cheap so they have to adjust the quantity and quality of the updates. We see very clearly since horizons how it's going... slow and clumsy. You remember Mr. Braben telling us there are multiple teams working on future content for ED? I remember. Looks like they had to adapt to how "well" the game is doing and slow down a little with all this content developement to cut the losses. That's why Horizons season lasted 2 instead of 1 year and now they just started to work on "beyond" few months ago.

And I don't have any problem with all this, game just didn't worked out as expected... happens all the time. But I have the problem with people telling stories about how well and good ED is doing... because that's not the truth. Dead? Maybe not but if I had to evaluate the state of the game only by 1(alive and well) and 0(dead) I would say 0 sooner than 1.
I'm not a hater, I still like ED and play sometimes but that doesnt change the fact how I feel about the progress of the game developement.

Especially since I probably don't show up on Steam since I bought this game before it was on Steam. I know there's a lot more like me.

This also doesn't show how many players are playing Elite that are NOT using Steam. I personally don't use Steam if I can help it. It's just another program running in the background that I don't need or want.

Surely popularity is the greatest measure of a games health, ED is a giant in it's field (it's a small field though).

Mr. Smith apparently didn't understand that the criteria that define 'mammal' and 'virus' don't really have much to do with behavior.

Mr Smith was goading and insulting the protagonist and probably couldn't care less about the classification methods the virus uses.

I think essentially question is - do you enjoy game? If yes, it doesn't die, it is still ongoing, enjoy it. If you don't - then move on.

I think players should really stop factor future in their fun. Speculation is fun for a while, but eventually it runs out of steam and then it just becomes 'I like it vs. you don't like it' forum fight, which is boring as hell.
