General / Off-Topic 40 Million credits in 3 Miles

Like most of you, I really enjoy playing Elite Dangerous :-D

That said, and like many other forum goers have admitted, I've put on some weight over the last few years, partly because my favorite hobby (gaming) typically involves me sitting in my recliner for hours on end.

But after finding I'd hit my all time high weight again, I decided it was time to consume less "comfort" food and beverages, and again lose those 40 extra pounds (yes 40) I've put (back) on over the last few years.

With that in mind, my first step was to brush off my FitBit and commit to getting at least 10,000 steps per day.

And that where Elite Dangerous comes in :-D

You know, when you're trying to make money or rank delivering cargo, data, or passengers, there's a lot of down time.

In the past (and like many of you) I've watched NetFlix, YouTube, and even read some books to pass the time.

But now I've re-purposed my Elite Grind Time as the time that I also walk to get to my 10K daily step goal.

You know, not only can you walk while you grind away at Elite, I've also found I can even run while I play too.

I've started following my wife's exercise routine as she does walk/run intervals using the 5K Runner app, and I've been able to grind away at Elite even while running at 5+ mph (about as fast I dare go right now!)

Doing that I was able to make 40 million credits hauling cargo and data all while traveling a distance of 3 miles on the treadmill!

The only down side is having to switch the controller between hands.

To address that issue, I have a second XBOX controller on the way to try out the XBOX Co-Pilot feature which will allow me to hold one controller in each hand (should have it by Friday :)

So if you're waistline has grown beyond what you're happy with, you're invited to join me in my journey to become Elite In Real Life!

Just plop your Elite Dangerous platform of choice in from of your "hands free" exercise equipment of choice, and get started!

Note: PC players may want to check out the Steam Link device. I do have one and plan to try it next week so I can also grind my PC account.

Fitbit, your paragraphs are 21st century and suitably short. Go on.

Ill stick to the rather old fashioned notion of walking the dogs in the mountains...jack russels both mentally deranged and both obsessed with a small rubber ball. Throw it anywhere...anywhere at all...they will find it because thats what they were trained to do. Off a sheer cliff face? No bother but they will probably go the long way to get back up. Off the end of a dock with a 12ft sheer drop into the sea? They will have jumped before the ball hits the water.

So much fun ye have no idea...I need a walking stick to do it and still make it up those hills faster than able bodied folks...but then Im old fashioned and refuse to lie down and quit...not in my nature.

32 inch waistline...read it and weep boys and girls...btw whats a fitbit? Sounds like a hot babe wearing lycra and running marathons but Im guessing not...Ill google it ^

Sit ups during longer supercruises?

Atrophy of muscles - in zero G - will always be a problem for astro-nauts (space travellers) so this is a fine idea.

Plus if you live longer, you can play elite, further into your old age too, so it's a double plus one.

Give up all white foods except cauliflower. No meat or dairy to never worry about gaining weight again. Hardest thing was giving up bread. I do eat the occasional french stick though. Boundless energy, never tired and zero brain fog.

UPDATE:

Walking and Running with two controllers (one in co-pilot mode on the XBOX) works extremely well, and I'm up to about 300mill earned on the treadmill.

I do wish I could use my Windows MR controllers with my XBOX, as I think they would be easier to hold.

Have not tried the Stream link yet - it's on my to-do list lol.

Also lost about 10 pounds so far in conjunction with a no carb Keto diet. 30 more to go before I hit my first goal.

lol. Love my Fitbit, but my old Fitbit watch's battery only lasts a day :-(

Hmm, combine something like https://zwift.com/ with Elite and you could pedal across the galaxy, while monitoring your wattage and heartrate.

:-D

I'd love to cycle too, and for those with bad knees it's a very good option. But in my case I sit a lot at work so I enjoy being upright when I exercise.

You are multitasking. The calories can be worried

:-D Thank you sir!

Sounds like fun, but with all the sub-zero temps we've had lately I'll stick to my treadmill :)

Hoping to get back to 32 in wasitline myself.

A Fitbit is a fancy pedometer. The goal is to get 10,000 steps a day - not so easy to do if you don't walk as part of your job, but playing Elite on the Treadmill helps immensely.

I've given up carbs - now bread, pasta, pizza or bear. Already lost 10 pounds. The good news is I can eat meat and veggies, so steak, chicken, turkey, ham, cheese, whisky, vodka, etc are all allowed.

So far I only miss bread as I typically eat a sandwich at lunch, but Eggs and Meat for breatfast, and Meat and Salad for dinner is not hard at all to do!

Thanks for all the replies folks - will update again in two weeks ;-)

Congrats on your progress!

Great article here:

Be aware that you will probably lose some water weight when switching to a carb restricted diet, which will taper off rapidly.
Don't be discouraged if your initial progress slows.
Also, one shot of vodka is still about 100 cal so be careful there.

To leaner and longer years!

Well done on the progress so far...I know its hard work fer those who are affected. Ive been incredibly lucky in that my weight has been more or less steady my entire life and I eat the biggest amount of crap that would give those with weight issues cold tremors.

About the cold weather...I have several advantages in my life that not everyone had...my old job required a high level of overall fitness as it was very manually demanding and almost all of it was outdoors in every possible weather imaginable, so in a way, Id already learned through the years to literally ignore the weather.

When I go into relapse, I cant walk at all...not even from room to room in the house, Ill probably add another stone or so but not much more as I naturally eat much less when Im not active.

That fitbit thing would be useless to me...cant even grab a quick smoke with two mental dogs who just never stop, so I tend not to overthink the actual distance. A typical walk would be roughly 3 miles twice a day during the summer, and once in the winter...any weather and they absolutely adore the snow. I dont though cos its too easy to lose the balls and it wrecks their sense of smell so they cant find them like they normally do.

I reckon Im just one of those lucky people who can eat and eat and not an ounce is added to the waistline...take care and remember...no pain no gain ^
