Prices for extras

Hmm. I think, the prices for models are way too high. For example for Cobra Mk. III - £500. Is it cost really so high? I can't understand this. Plastic spacecraft models, from Revell, costs maximum 50$. From Airfix - £50..and Cobra Mk III - £500...really this is too high.

Hi OSH,

If you were to buy a model from a store then you're right, these prices are high. However the point in the models is not as a purchasable item, they are a reward that we're providing to people that have pledged towards the development of the game. This is an important distinction to make.

The whole point of the Kickstarter and the following web app is to raise money so we can develop Elite, the rewards are our way or showing gratitude for your support. It would hardly be worth us providing these rewards if the majority of the original pledge went into producing them.

I think some of the rewards have quite a high cost but you also have to consider that they are being made in small runs whereas airfix models, Revell etc are being produced in thousands so there is a huge economy of scale at work. Producing items on a small run is always more expensive and as stated there needs to be a bit of profit to allow ED to get developed

It's one of those things really - they pitch it at a price that they feel makes it worth doing with regards to the sales it will get and the money it will generate.

I agree, it's way too high when compared to similar items so would never buy one... but I'm guessing people have, so job done! :)

Personally, I don't feel, like as I was "rewarded" for pledging. Rather, like I've bought these "extras". You have collected over 1,5 million pounds to develop E: D. I'm not against continue pledging, but really, 500 pounds.. I live in Poland - most of people here earns monthly 2500 PLN - this is approximately 500 GBP. I know, this can be hard to understand in UK or other western countries (and much people from Poland live in UK now) - but this is real. I'm interesting, which company will produce this models - Airfix? Revell? Maybe they can be purchased in the future for a "normal" price.
I have to make such model myself for now...

Yes it is steep for a model but for that price you know if you had one, you would be among a very small group to have an official model of an elite space ship. I personally went down the route of naming a planet and a station in game to immortalise my contribution.

Go and get an Airfix or Revell set commissioned by a professional model maker - get them to build it, mount it, paint it and ship it - and see how much change you have left out of £500. It won't be a lot....

which company will produce this models - Airfix? Revell?

No - they're mass market producers. These are likely to be made by a specialist company, as incredibly limited special commissions.

(Remember you can always go the papercraft route if you want a physical Cobra model to play with.)

Not price, but amount is important here. I doubt, this will be ever available for "normal" purchase and for "normal" price. So it will stay as "nice collectors item" even if it price will be 50 GBP.

500£ = Nice collectors item

50£ not so much

I would have liked to get an Elite model but I only Collect Die Cast Metal Ships.

Great collection! This call box looks really weird among other spacecrafts :D

But is still a (time and) space craft :)

I was under the impression that the models were going to be 3D printed to be honest, rather than fabrication kits as people seem to be referring. Would be relatively easier to do, as you can just take the 3D renders from in game and these make up your model design. Still would need sanding etc to remove the furring of course, and a lick of paint - all done by hand, and that's part of the manufacturing cost... If that's the way it's going.

But that seems to be what the collector appeal is.

Would love one myself too, but the pledge upgrade stole the last of available funds ;)

Mobius I just had a Nerdgasm!

@OSH: Yes it's a LOT of money, but I kust admit that if I had the money, I'd buy one of each! Not because they have any real worth, but because they're rare and they're collector's items.

Some people can afford them, others can't - you pledge what you feel like and what you can afford - some things will be too expensive for any of us to get.

As Michael said, the physical items are priced way more than what they cost to make, but if they sold for less, there wouldn't be any profit for Frontier = less money to make Elite for.

I've paid £40 for a Pink Floyd mug that probably cost less than 50p to produce - but to me it's priceless.

My entire dining room table is full of Star Wars lego models (and the Death Star play set, just because). I am contemplating cashing out some premium bonds to get a model or two though, and maybe jonty up to space station name level.

A work colleague of mine (and also a backer here) jut acquired one of the space 1999 die casts

Need to see a photo or it doesn’t exist.:)

Oh and that Eagle is a beautiful thing to have on display. I’m very fortunate to have a conservatory that I treat as my games room and have most of my props and models in here with me. The conservatory and toilet are the only places where the wife lets me show them.

Hi,

Are there any pictures of your collection somewhere ?
Btw I was also assuming that these models would be 3D printed
