Finally got my wife into this game, she has a few observations about it

enjoyed the grind? 3 days? where was that grind actually?

but great you made her play with you (on another level as well)

Oh she knows this is just the start of a LONG grind, but she is the type of person that enjoys grinding a game for its rewards, I think given time she will be hooked forever (hopefully)

OP, here's the advice I'd give your charming lady...

"Remember who we are in this game. Our job isn't to change the universe or save it, it's to survive it and live in it. When something kicks off, if enough of us get involved we can direct how it comes out but mostly we can't make it kick off, at least, not alone. This is the biggest problem most gamers have with Elite. No matter how lowly your supposed 'origins' in most games, there's this path you can follow to end up as the dragonborn warrior, the crime boss of vice city, the high admiral of star fleet or the jedi master. Elite doesn't have that. You start as a regular schmuck and you will always be a regular schmuck. We've already got the biggest leg up we're going to get by being members of the pilot's federation. Set your game goals accordingly and you'll find much more to do and much more to enjoy in Elite than you'd think. Try to find that 'progression to endgame' and it will be an exercise in frustration."

Thanks CMDR, that is good advice and a nice way to show what the difference is between this type of open game, and other regular games that you can complete in a few days. I don't think its ever going to be possible to feel like you have completed Elite Dangerous, which is part of the appeal for me and I hope for her too.

Fair comments across the board, honestly. It's feedback that's been received and forwarded before so hopefully the upcoming changes lead toward more of what people are looking for. I won't promise that it'll resolve every gripe or meet *all* expectations of the game, but I'm confident that the focused feedback sessions with Sandro (more will come!) will get us closer to giving all of us what we'd like to see. :)

Like interesting stuff for criminals to make up for all the Punishment?

Sorry to be a grammar (actually, perhaps not...) but it's "piqued [someone's] interest" not "peaked".

I'll let the apostrophe abuse slide.

Hmmm, perhaps you should re-read your apparent sentence, I think maybe you missed a word. According to that sentence you appear to say you are "a grammar", did you perhaps mean to say "Sorry to be a grammar snob?"

Pretty sure that's just the forum filter cutting a word, working as intended.

And in the interest of being relevant to this discussion, this can't be emphasised enough:

"Remember who we are in this game. Our job isn't to change the universe or save it (single handed*), it's to survive it and live in it. When something kicks off, if enough of us get involved we can direct how it comes out but mostly we can't make it kick off, at least, not alone. If she wants Narrative content, then she has joined right in the perfect update!

This update is TOTALLY narrative driven!

There are minor stories sometimes at select stations. They aren't widely advertised and that is sort of the point.
For example, if you are at Obsidian Orbital in Maia, there is a news article about a woman looking for her lost husband. The events of which are actually in the game if you decide to go check them out.

I'd like to think there are others around.

That'll actually be the ED nanny-filter deleting a word often associated with a very particular WWII leader, that just so happened to be Austrian born.

Z...

Yet you use ellipsis within brackets and left out commas. It should read as follows: ]Sorry to be a grammar (actually, perhaps not...), but it's "piqued [someone's] interest", not "peaked"

Also, your criticism concerns the misuse of a word, rather than grammar. And on the subject of words, what is a grammar?

Actually, you shouldn't be starting a sentence with a ].
:p

So, she was really enjoying the game, enjoying the grind of building towards better ships and equipment etc. But here is where things start to fall apart. She thinks the game is fascinating, ambitious, great to look at and could be amazing, but she wants more. She started asking me questions such as "Why can't I go look around the inside of my ship?" / "Isn't there some more relevant 'Story' missions that relate to the lore and history?"

I did tell her that the FDev guys are working on new stuff all the time, and space legs are apparently coming one day, but I was wondering if anyone knows what new features etc. might be coming soon? As I said, its taken me ages to get her into the game, she loves it and is determined to get enough money to buy a Python next so good luck to her. I get this feeling however without more "content" she will get bored and drop it completely. We need more variety in missions, more stories that seem to mean something, more interesting things to do. Have the FDev's announced much in the way of whats coming next?

Point her to the Ram Tah mission and the Guardian ruins. She can have fun learning that lore, interacting with the monoliths, and making some good money. Then give her some of the locations of various Generation ships that have been found, INRA bases discovered, etc. She should enjoy seeking that stuff out and hearing the logs and background lore.

Supposedly there is going to be a player lore galactapedia coming in the Q4 update, which will record all the things you learn in game. Until then, just go to the Aliens section of the form, find juicy stuff she might be interested in, tell her where to go, and let her discover it for herself. :D

If she wants to walk about the inside of her ship, have take a look at some star citizen videos. She might like it. Congratulations on getting you missus to play.

You forgot the part about needing a $5,000.00 PC before you can run that game's latest build at an "unlocked" 60fps @ 1080p. ;) Even then, there will still be plenty of slide show moments in your sessions.

Just take a look at the last live SC demo run by the developers. That session was running on an overclocked i7 8700k and (2) GTX 1080tis in SLI. [weird]

Going for the Python after the Cobra mk3? I'd recommend the Asp Explorer as an inbetween ship.

Have you two tried working the background simulation (BGS)?
The BGS is a constant creator of content. Not narrated though but with a bit of imagination it works quite well.

One can really immerse oneself in being an insignificant pilot that helps factions at gaining more influence, more stations and more systems.

That's what I've been doing for the last two years.
Some people in my group have been working the BGS even longer.

If you are interesed in how the BGS works and how you can influence it, check out the link in my siganture.

However, in the last couple of months (after wasting a ton of cash into Destiny 2, what a disappointment that was) she was looking for something new to play.

You know, you say that like it's the most natural, most not-unusual thing in the world for an adult woman (who married you!) to enjoy computer games.

I envy you.

My wife is still acclimating to three dimensional space, which is apparently new to her.

This is why I'm the driver, even at parties.

"It's OK if you want to drink sweetheart, I can drive!"
"...Oh, no worries dear, another dry night will suit me just fine."

I'm really enjoying the petty grammar one-upmanship!

Now, if one would like to partake....please be advised that 'dork-snorting' is a mandatory requirement (sic) when one submits the shame-inducing corrections. :D

NB: One really comes across as a snobby barsteward when one uses the pronoun "one" instead of the "you" variant, doesn't one?

Petty much?

If one were threatened, or intimidated, by the use of formal English, one could see how one could come across as such. ;)

Totally off-topic, but I remember e-mailing Virgin Active a number of years ago, and not getting a response.
So, out of frustration I wrote a load of "formal English" waffle - which did actually garner a response from them. Even more surprising, they actually managed to figure out what I wrote, lol.

Would it be idiosyncratic of one to arrogate upon oneself the right to suspend belief in the ability ofVirgin Active employee's to read and, by accretion, respond to emails?

It would appear so, for a month has almost passed (October 2nd) since my first enquiry was ever so politely neglected in favour of an automated response. Indeed, it would appear further that Virgin Activebelieve this impersonal, emotionless antiphon to be a more than sufficient elucidation to my inquisition - if the paucity of interpersonal acknowledgement from any Virgin Active employee with respect to my query is to be a begetter of one's postulation.

I would profoundly and without equivocation beg to differ.

I humbly behest that the beneficiary of this correspondence treat it with unmitigated exigency.

For, in light of Virgin Actives' destestable affectation of "Customer Service", one has no recourse left to o neself but to transitorily withhold disbursement until such time as one has acquired an assuasive response to one's query.

One, Jacqui Walters, shall - I believe - have a copy of the email to which I am referring.

Thanks for reminding me, I need to see if Frustmaster has uploaded any new videos. That guy's amazing, we should see if we can bribe him to come over to ED.

Sandro, spacelegs soon plz :D

Your wife's experience matches my own. I really think that from Cobra III everything was more of the same.

One would think that removing Cobra III from the game would resolve everything but no. :D

But it is the first ship that can do pretty much everything the game offers and well enough. With it you see all the missions the game has at all and want something deeper, like story-driven missions. Then you realize that the story is text written and you can participate by CGs, which again are more of the same.

Then you go exploring because the game is so damn beautiful.

Yes. If it wasn't for the amazing sights I'd have left long ago. I'm really looking forward to the de-beigification that's coming in the next few weeks.
