There actually was a time when the only way you could play with other CMDRs was by playing in Open.

I know what you are thinking. "But PG has always been a thing."

Aha! That's where you're wrong! I would like to take you to Elite Dangerous on Xbox. For the first year or so, there was no PG on Xbox.

That's right! To play with friends, you also had to expose yourself to the filthy gankers!

Eventually FD did add PG to Xbox. But it was not there for a long time. So, at least on an individual platform... Open-only Co-Op play did actually exist. But Frontier decided to change that and give us filthy console players PG as well.

What am I saying? Why am I rambling on? Simple.

If PG is somehow "bad" for the game... Well, I don't have to tell you that Frontier's decision to cease forcing players into Open to play with friends, was not an accident.

That time happened well after the release on PC / Mac with Private Groups in place.

From what I understand there was an issue on XB1 initially that delayed implementing Private Groups - the fact that Private Groups were missing was not due to a philosophy change by Frontier - that lack was happily remedied in due course.

Thankfully the PS4 launch included the expected Private Groups.

Perhaps, but they certainly did blatantly ignore the lamentations of PvP players on Xbox who cried "loss of content" when their addition of PG was announced. ;)

Just as they steadfastly continued with their stated design and developed then released the game on PC/Mac with three game modes and a single shared galaxy state.

Aye, exactly. It's just another example of Frontier being clear on their stance on the game, which is that the player may choose precisely who they play with, by way of the modes.

The desires of Xbox PvP players were directly in conflict with FD's vision, and as such, were ignored.

I never knew that, nice fun fact, thanks! +rep Cmdr :)

Really?

Because a few of us in the SOG threads have been saying it since XB1 version came out.
We even joined the debate with XB1 users to help "reinforce" the notion PGs were wanted /needed on XB1
Until they were added.

Then of course that became proof of the design philosophy to use in the SOG threads afterwards when "The user who shall not be named" still complained about the mode system.

I thought I'd seen you in some of those debates !?!?!?

What's a SOG?

With the amount of threads I've participated in I may have as well forgotten, if I have indeed participated in such discussions. I rarely read/post in console forums. Feel free to refresh my memory. It's excellent, but very short ;)

This ties in with what I'v been saying for a while now. ED was never intended as a free for all PvP game. The way the servers handle connections, modes of play etc all clearly show this. CQC was an attempt to appease the PvP focused groups which didn't work.

The other aspect is that a lot of the PvP focused groups come from an EVE background and really haven't adapted to the ED style or concept at all, even after 4 years... Ah well.

The Solo / Open / Groups (SOG) threads - the grandfathers to this sub forum, where all mode discussions were merged. Last one being the "Hotel California" thread.
The first one was 2nd of Jan 2015 by Yaffle, due to the number of threads some players were making on the same topic (just wording the title a little different each time).
So in response, from then all mode threads were merged in to the mega threads.

Thought I'd seen you in one, must have been mistaken - you blue names do get about, and there is a few of you ;)

Because they came over on a crusade to make this EVE in cockpits.
The worst part is, they all know that is more the target audience for Star Citizen, but of course instead of going over there and telling Roberts to stop procrastinating and faffing about, they come here to moan this isn't SC / EVE.

You sir are absolutely correct on that.
This just is not a pvp game as such just look at the way it is designed compared to pubg ant wot for example.
I think it's time we stopped with all the pvp arguments.
Look guys there is CQC there and you can kill each other over pp the rest is more a coop thing.

I love the way groups are set up on the xbox...they operate in more or less the same way other platform groups work...gotta leave the game and use 3rd party external resources just to communicate with each other, or play the game on the bone and have a laptop running beside ye.

I already wandered off the moment I heard about external resources, interest completely gone.

I dont ignore groups, just find them asinine to work with...leaving the game to chat with each other...seriously?

Sorry what was the question again?

I'm so glad I'm part of the PCMR.

When I got in to gaming, I looked at consoles and got a terrifying chill down my spine and felt sick.
After reading this, I'm so glad I got a bad feeling about consoles.

My first gaming CPU was;

They were days. :)

Consoles aint bad...not great but not that bad sorta thing but cutting out of a game to check external sources really aint my strong point and Im too poor to own a pc anymore. The bone actually performs better than my pc which is why I stopped using the antique...if I upgrade at all itll be the new xb1x...pc is just more hassle and too much money and doesnt play all the games I like playing. The xb1x performs as well as a mid range gaming rig and still half the price so one has to be practical about these things.

Fer better or worse, Im sticking with consoles...fer now anyway, might win the lottery one day who knows

I dont even have a laptop so using external sources really isnt that easy...not impossible just a right royal pita. Its the main reason why after two years, I still have almost no friends in this game because all the groups use Inara and discord...which I dont use. Making new buds is a helluva lot harder in elite than its been in any other game Ive ever played.

But as fer past pc gaming...8 years in eve and thats not a console game and about a decade before that which is early to mid 90s until last year when my antique finally gave up. But consoles aint all bad...bad rep at times but no worse than any other platform...pc gamers tend to be more salty and hateful though while console gamers tend to be more chilled out. Thats reflected and confirmed in the forums almost everyday.

First pc was a zx spectrum 48k which was second hand...mostly fer producing music tracks and the more simplistic games like jet set will and tapper...the internet didnt really exist back then...well technically it did but it wasnt useful till much later on.
