General / Off-Topic The Orville

All I'm going to say is what a lovely surprise. I expected it to be awful and full of crap jokes. It has jokes in there but there are serious social topics addressed. The third episode could have been a legit story on the TNG. I'm more hyped for the Orville than I am for the new Star Trek show.

I remember seeing the trailer earlier this year, but I didn't know it had already started in the US.
I guess we'll get it eventually. Sometime. Next year. Maybe.

I don't get why people complain about the CGI in Discovery and say to you should watch this abysmal low-budget money grab instead. The CGI in Orville is so bad you could probably create more realistic sequences by recording game play from a PC game of your choice.
The acting is also worse in this show. Who would have guessed with Seth as the leading "actor"? Apart from that I just felt this show is written too lazily. I wonder if the original script was intended for 30 minute episodes and just stretched to hour long ones. It's g boring.

Agreed. :)

It's better ST than Discovery ever be. 10 Minute was way too much from that.

To each their own. Discovery isn't bad imho-- kind of rough to judge an entire series by the first two episodes. I think it's almost traditional that the first few episodes -- even the first season -- of post -tng trek are terrible (first season of "enterprise" killed the entire franchise; DS9 didn't get good until WELL after the first season, voyager was mediocre at best the first season and... well, it stayed mediocre). That aside, I enjoyed the first two episodes, hoping it picks up a bit in the third episode. A lot of people are put off by the un-trek like inclusion of a story arc, lack of a reset button, and departure from strict canon. And the fact that you have to pay for it (which, knowing the trek community, I think will kill the show more than anything). At least here in the U.S., it's only available on CBS all access for $5/month (and that's WITH commercials)... Discovery was supposed to be *the* show that launched their streaming service, I think the service will flounder and the payment requirement will kill discovery by first season. OR maybe they'll switch to Netflix or amazon.

I'll watch it until it gets it gets chopped. It's decent sci-fi.

I just watched the first 4 episodes.

It's stunning. Ok, SOME of the jokes are a little TOO silly, but it's just so well done. Sure, the CGI is rough in places, and the bridge could use some sprucing up.. but everything works. Every character is superb, the stories already told are just typically Trek, but told in a slightly more believable way somehow.

I actually hope they become a teeny bit more serious as time goes on, as they've done something that no Trek series has really ever managed to pull of - have a cast that work well together from day one.

I expected this show to be nothing more than comedic relief, and a bit of a farce - and I suspect that's how it was originally envisioned. But... by the 4th episode, it was already becoming more mature, and I hope the rest of the season is as good as these. It makes 'Discovery' look positively ridiculous TBH.

I'm a fan.

I enjoy Orville and the new ST so far.
I was also pleasantly surprised about The Orville; but not for the same reason as OP .. I don't care about social topics, I just watch for the entertainment value. :p

I expected it to be funnier, instead it's more of a mid-90's Trek clone with a few dirty jokes and the occasional [sensibleChuckle.gif]

However since I grew up watching Star Trek in the mid90's I really do like the part of it that I completely didn't expect, and when it's funny it's really funny. I hope it sticks around.

peeked on the latest episode not watched it over but based on what i seen? I like it.
(Not in the mood for movies right now). :)

Oh Yea im in love with the Orville the episode where they find the super big space "ark?" was the most powerful so far I heard someone say they can't stand Seth Macfarlane but love the Orville. I'm like, how dare you.

I just don't like how they have so many commercials and the next episode in TWO weeks

I love this show. Not what I was expecting, but in a good way. Take the jokes out of the latest episode and that would have been a very decent episode of Star Trek.

Great summary of the show.

Pretty spot on. I do hope they dial down some of the cringe that's going on still. The leg in "Pria" for example was great. The way they talked on the Krill ship... not so much.

Yeah dial down the humor a bit, and it's right in the sweet spot!

However I really enjoy the show and hope it will last for 10 seasons :)
