Personal Narrative

I am beginning to come to the conclusion that some people have got themselves into a self-perpetuating circle of dissatisfaction. Everything is considered "grind".
Its game play, and if you cant break the circle, accept what FD are trying to do after acting on all the "input", and enjoy playing the game, maybe its time to admit its not the game for you.

I'm about reaching the point you mention. I didn't expect a lot from Beyond Q1, so having seen what there is so far, I'm not disappointed - There's nothing particularly that interests me, but I didn't expect there to be. I'm also not expecting much from Q2 or even Q3.

But Q4, along with the DLC, for me will I suspect be a milestone. Will FD, with basically a totally clean sheet of paper, actually come up with some solid deeper gameplay content (ie: raise the bar), or yet again bolt on some shallow point and click mini-game antics...

I don't believe that people are in some "unfair dissatisfaction funk". I believe they're bemused about the disparity between the sales/kickstarter pitch from X years ago (the impression of where the gameplay was headed) and a long list of questionable developments/designs (in their humble opinions). I think people are just frustrated at what they thought the game was going to be, and the nature of what's being repeatedly delivered?

ps: I have no idea if the Tech Broker and the Personal Narative are going to be good and worthwhile. Let's see...

A personal narrative is a story, right? Your characters story? So in the case of ED, you're story is as interesting as the "personal narrative" of the factory working telling you about the 3456th arm he attached to a doll. Most people when they play a game they paid money for expect something fun and interesting to do.

Except materials are available to find in a mile wide range of ways .. so not really.

There was this one time, my friend and I went to a hotdog stand, and I got a hotdog with ketchup on it, but he got a hotdog with mustard. Both hotdogs costs $1.25. Now, *I* paid with four quarters, one dime, and two nickels; but my friend did something totally different: he paid with a dollar bill, TWO dimes, and five pennies! We each had our own personal narrative. I guess you might say we were each blazing our own trail.

Look at it as a support for narative in a weak sense (i.e. as stuff that you might want to include in your storry, like backdrop or color) then it's kinda ok.

But... personal narative in the "common sense" sense ? nope.

For me a personal narative using those would be building a typical P&P RPG 5x5 quest/donjon design involving cool locations,
tech brockers, thargoids, mysteries and elite lore in a neat package.

FDev have the locations, the lore and the tools to do it. I feel that having an experienced GM on payroll would not hurt them.

OH there it is. Well I guess I'll be surface prospecting for 37 hours after all.

We haven't seen how the material broker is going to go yet. We do know it's in the update though. I suspect it's going to unlock this problem - though you may need to collect low grade materials for (sic.) 74 hours ofc.

I have done some serious amount of prospecting and never used a single piece of Technetium. I would be happy to trade some for you. So... uh... never mind.

"I supported the uprising of communist rebels in fringe system X, and asked to be rewarded in materials/data rather than credits. After this I helped them stave off a famine, and hunted down a pirate lord that threatened the system. This got me the required materials to gain access to a customized weapon from a local tech broker." etc etc.

Which translates to pressing J a bunch of times to deliver things or pay donation via the BB, pressing J to go to another piece of space practically identical to the last one you were in and defeat an easy AI threat and a bunch more J's back and forth as you delivered food - so most of the "game" is watching a loading screen and sitting in SC.

So whilst your text makes it sound fun, when you break down what you did, it really wasn't that much other than a whole lot of sitting there.

the game is what it is, and always will be. this is just how frontier rolls. it's their signature style. people don't need to hang around if they have different expectations of what it should be. because it never will be. makes sense?

People interested in seeing the game improve and prosper always hang around,
no matter how dim the beacon of hope.

As I said, there are other ways. Such as missions, where you can now ask to be rewarded in mats. Its not my problem you insist on just grinding in a buggy. Do missions, see aliens, combine everything.

Or grind&complain.

THAT is a COOL change.

I'm looking forward to that and the mats broker. I'm drowning in exquisite focus crystals and modified embedded software . . . which is SO ironic, 'cause with my alternate account, those were about as plentiful as hens' teeth . . . :D

I mean, you're probably right. I think Frontier is giving up on credits and going all-in on materials as the new currency. But if this is the case then it only further diminishes the "personal narrative" angle - there's nothing personal about doing literally whatever, accumulating a bunch of whatever, exchanging all of it at a bank for a different kind of whatever, and then finally spending it at a shop to buy a new gun. It's convoluted, sure, but it's not personal. It's ultimately the same as buying equipment at outfitting now.

Honestly I think the "Personal Narrative" comment in the livestream was just an off-the-cuff remark, and shouldn't be taken too seriously in the first place. I'm sure (ok fine I hope) that Frontier knows what Personal Narrative really means and I'm sure (ok fine I hope) that Frontier has other plans which are more directly related to this idea.

But I do find it amusing that there are so many people here who are willing to dig in their heels and insists that yes, Buying a Gun in a Store is what personal narrative looks like, and expecting anything more is just pure insanity.
