Before and after shots for new planetary tech.

Nah, just like in 2.2, all RW/HMC/MR worlds will be changed for 3.0 per the new generation algorithms. Even planets in the bubble with bases on them will be improved and look different. The new routines in the Stellar Forge completely replace the current routines.

What we don’t know is if the ice world coloring will be changed at all? They might start to look rather bland compared to the rock worlds after 3.0.

So are you indicating that all planets will be entirely different, with different surface features, etc (ie. Canyon where there was once a mountain?) or just their coloration and lighting? It would be uncool if darwins legacy Basecamp was entirely a different place than it is now.

What is even more interesting is how the surfaces will change once q4 is released. How will they reconcile existing topography with new surface textures and features....

Yeah, that would be a good question to ask the devs, perhaps during the next livestream on Tuesday. They will be overhauling the ice worlds later, of course, but it would be good to know what we can expect for the first update.

I don't think we know that yet. Maybe they improved surface generation, in which case they will have different surfaces, maybe they just improved their looks, to set the different areas apart better. Another good question for the devs.

It would be a real bummer if edsm galactic mapping project had to delete all their Surface Feature POIs because all the surface topography is different - things like Glacier Point for example. My best guess is that they are only improving textures, coloring, and lighting using the existing topography. That being said, in order to achieve massive 'wow factor' planets, it might be necessary to reprogram the way surfaces are formed... my guess is that if they are going to change the way surfaces are formed topographically, that update would come in Q4.

Let's ask fdev.

We honestly don't know. I had hoped this livestream would tell us more about the changes, but they chose not to.

I'd like to see what Drakes Ridge (DWE WP5) looks and sounds like with the new changes. That place was bloody creepy!

I hope its been restored to its former glory.

It's one of the few old DW1 waypoints we'd like to re-incorporate into DW2 this year. Obviously depends on whether it's got its mist shrouded craters back, and that green hue! The place was indeed creepy! :D

They didn't say in this livestream, but they mentioned previously that this is just a recoloring in the Q1 update. Surface features and ground scatter are slated for the Q4 update.

That's what I thought. Looks like I will be getting a Pimax 8k VR and new pc for q4! Now, to figure out a way to save $4000..... hmmm....

Is there somewhere I can exchange some of my 2 billion credits for US dollars?

As far as I can tell this pass will only be colouring and texturing, that is changing colours depending on vulcanism and mineral content, so iron rich planets will probably be a redder tone, rocky without much metal will be darker grey and etc through all the different combinations. You should be able to tell what the planet is made of and where minerals are concentrated just by looking at them, even vulcanism which will indeed be a big change and maybe will help us find vulcanism on some of the larger bodies.

Later in Beyond we are getting improvements to the surface, such as better object scattering, more varied objects and surface texture changes, but I haven't yet seen anything to tell me they are going to change the heightmaps that generate the actual landscape, this would be difficult at the moment and pretty much pointless unless they were introducing major changes such as a new surface generation method that included support for overhangs, caves and other such varied topographic features not supported by plain height maps.

They changed some features previously to get rid of anomalous features such as the 30km deep vertical walled crater but I suspect that was simply a pass to tidy up problems in the height map generation, just chopping off the extreme ends of the generated numbers which would simply be the addition of an algorithm to detect when height map number wandered to far from the average and to limit it. The actual landscape would have still had the same general shape, just not the extreme depressions and ridges we used to see. So most things should stay the same, but they should look a lot different.

Beaten by Orvidius!

Yeah, Frontier has made it sound like 3.0 is only changing planet colors and that the terrain features and height maps will be unchanged. However, just look at this planet from the stream:

That planet's terrain looks far more detailed than anything I've seen since before 2.2. Either there are also some terrain changes or the new colors are just doing a superlative job of bringing the existing terrain features into a brand new light...

It is indeed the texturing and colouring, having spent many days on some bodies I have noticed myself how different landscapes can look hugely different, far more detailed with different lighting, and that's without any changes in the colouring and texturing, once that happens we will notice a big difference.

Yeh that was too bad they take those cool things out! Those are the things that are worth exploring for - landscapes I search... 400 billion star systems, most with more than 5 planets. .. my guess is that somewhere in the milky way there IS a 30km crater wall. Too bad their simulation software doesn't (well actually it did but we removed it because, well, reasons) allow for it.

Indeed it is. In all practicality the features may have been "unrealistic" but it would have been nice if efforts had been made to preserve the already discovered anomalies, just like Mitterand's Hollow, but the planet generation tech may have made that difficult or just too time consuming to be practical.

Looks like everyone who was in deep space was moved back to the bubble for the Beta.
My commander is a copy from two weeks ago, before I reached Elite.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/401680-3-0-Open-Beta-Patch-Notes

"The colouration of the surfaces now more clearly telegraphs the chemical make up and volcanic activity of the worlds"

Same here, I sent fdev a support ticket about being moved all the way to Wyrd, I haven't been there since, well I can't remember, months ago. Spoiled all my plans I am afraid oh well.

our beta profile tends to be an older version of your progress than the live game, which is why you're likely finding yourself in a different place.

Unfortunately we're not able to make any changes to your beta CMDR, sorry to disappoint.

If there is anything else we can help you with, please do let us know and we'll be happy to help out if we can.

Yes I knew that, that's the reason I hung around where I was for two weeks, but it seems strange I had exactly the same amount of money I had after I turned in my last explo data in Colonia, and that's 20kly from where I turned up.
