Modes 30 minute cooldown on switching modes

I had to switch from Open to PG over the weekend due to game client crashes in Open. An extra 30 mins before I could play would not have been good.

CMDR Two Is Online.

"Hey CMDR one, wanna wing up for a bit?"
"Sure, where are you, CMDR two?"
"Open."
"Damn, I'm in solo"
"Nevermind"

:p

Not so fixed.

I think what he meant was that after the first switch a timer would set in.
Still doesn't matter, people would just log out and then log back in, takes only marginally longer.
Unless OP also wants to restrict when or how often people can shut down the game, restart it and choose a mode from the main menu, perhaps he should have spent 30 minutes to actually think this through.

well that shouldn't happen.

Next!

ofc the cooldown is server side..... restarting game wouldn't work

What's with the need to decide how other people play their games?

It's not about a need to decide how other people play the game. The devs claim they are trying to fix the exploit, OP's idea wouldn't work, but it's still an idea. There is likely an elegant solution out there somewhere, we aren't getting paid to find a solution, let the devs deal with it.

there.

Mode switching resolved.

You're welcome FD!

If all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.

That applies for games design/balancing tools as well.

Would asking why people even feel compelled to switch modes and trying to tackle the underlying issues be too much to ask for? Why do people switch modes, if the mission board only generates rubbish not suited for their ship? Because RNG missions are but a waste of everybody's time.

Why do some people switch modes, if they get bend over by people in overengineerred combat ships whenver they approach a trade CG in open? Because they see no option to avoid and survive these attackers. Why should anybody prevent them from doing so? Beats me. Their free time, their way to play the game.

Switching modes is only a "problem" because doing so circumvents protections against undesired behaviour.

There's nothing wrong with switching modes. There's nothing wrong with stacking missions. There's nothing wrong with high payouts.

What's wrong is getting a new set of missions when you switch. This is not new. It is not even new knowledge. The devs explained ages ago how the mission list is generated. They also stated that it's hard to find time to solve it in a satisfactory way. So they leave things as they are. For now.

We've been having this conversation for years.

Cooling down switching would annoy people and only address the symptoms of a malaise which, whether you or I like it or not, has been deemed to be only a minor inconvenience by the developers.

But it does.

Besides: are you seriously suggesting that Frontier should give people more reasons to not play the game?

if it fixes the major exploits the game has had in the past years, yes.

Stop being so whiny because of very specific and rare situations seriously.

Ah this is the tub getting thumped this week. At least the open vs solo debate is getting a little rest.

Yes but which mode should you switch to after you've finished loading up? ;)

OP, nice idea but ultimately not practical. And I assure you that FDev have thought of this before and considered it carefully.

Mode switching is an exploit and is just as bad as combat logging. Worse even because it's done so much more.

I do think that if you log out of Open, you should be stuck in solo or PG for some period of time. 30 minutes is good. Either that or put you in an Open where you can't see anyone else. We know that Frontier can do this because they do it for newbs and mention how they are going to do it for when a player gets out of a detention center.

It really is a very obvious fix.

What is the excuse for someone to need to be switching modes with so much frequency if not exploiting?
