Galnet Audio: The most useless thing in the whole game?

I am excited for this with one caveat:

Galnet needs to be used more ingame!

I want to be flying to a system and hearing "emergency broadcast: Thargoids have just attacked station x in the y system" or "x faction has put out a large order for y" etc, I don't want to be checking off game links to find out whats happening in the "story", I want it in game! And an update every few weeks frankly isn't good enough! Now hopefully once they have this in game they will make much better use of it than they do the current galnet which is massively underused often with stuff appearing in it days after it's happened!

Totally agree. The new audio features look superb, now all we need is better/more content. Personally I was gutted when submissions for community supplied Galnet content was suspended. We desperately need to see this start back up again. Hopefully this will come (well, more than hopefully, it HAS TO!), but in the meantime the new features look really well done.

This system definitely can be used for emergency broadcasts.

And I agree, such things must be a....thing :D

Interestingly, could FD tap into mods team to help with primary vetting of user submissions? Like, there's multi tier editorial system, first one checks for swear words, stuff that might be hard for text-to-voice to handle. And then some from CM might check for lore and importance.

I liked player submissions a lot and wait for them to come back.

Personally I'd say they should be hiring someone as part of the community team (or expanding a current members role) whose job is to put in game announcements for CGs, Thargoid attacks and community submissions ingame. Frankly if they ever got to the stage of CGs being automated like they talked about over a year ago then that would be an automated announcement...station attacks could be too, and if eventually we get that as part of wars? automated too, but at least to start get someone paid to start filling in this stuff and demonstrating the system!

Obviously you'd want it tiered for "galaxy wide" "local area" and "system only" depending on what the announcement was, and automating a lot of it like the STC's, I mean imagine dropping into a system you were going to fly through and hearing "Local announcement: system is in boom and has needs pilots to deliver goods to nearby systems" and you fly to the station for some juicy delivery missions? Or "be warned commander there is a war in x nearby system (say systems within 20ly)" and you can then go "yay lets go there" or "thanks I'll steer clear"

There are so many opportunities for this, if they put the content into the system!

Just one question - why? Seriously, why? IMO, this text-to-voice engine is the biggest waste of developer time. Do you really think someone would use it?

The main reason is that currently people tend not to read Galnet because why stop to read text when you could be spending your valuable time actually playing the game. Galnet audio means you can do both! I've had text-to-speach Galnet for years now via VoiceAttack plugins and EDToolbox. I hit a key and it tells me if there are new articles and then I press another key (while I'm busy flying around and generally playing the game) and it reads them out for me. It's brilliant and this new builtin Galnet audio, with it's superior text to speach, it's notion of adding stories to a play queue, and multi-lingual support, looks vastly superior to what I have currently.

I'm looking forward the the Galnet audio. I rarely read it currently and am far more likely to listen to it as a background activity.

EDDI is a plug in you run with Elite, you say stuff, she/he answers. Stuff happens ingame, she/he informs you of it.

It's actually pretty neat. For example, if you scan a star EDDI says the composition, the age, the class. Or when changing system it informs you during witchspace how many people live there, the status and the economy.

It also can be launched as an extension of voice attack, and it's fully customizable both in what the system says in certain situations and in what you have to say to trigger stuff ingame.

Persumably anyone wanting to use Galnet audio would have to disable EDDI?

It is way more important than fixing combat log.............. connexion error. /s

Hmmm, let's see now ... how many times have I been troubled by combat logging in my 1600+ hours of game time? Oh yeah ... zero, zip, nada, the big fat zilcherino! (genuinely).

And how many times have I thought "I wish I could hear the latest Galnet" while on a long supercruise to a station? Many.

For the average player, my guess is that a cool new audio feature is WAY more interesting than a clogging fix.

I'm not saying clogging isn't a problem, and I'm not unsympathetic to those it affects ... but the clogging banner wavers need to get some perspective.

I will definitly give it a try. While the german translation sounds a little bit of in terms of pronounciation i like the idea. And everything, that works directly ingame is a good thing.

EDDI would still be very usefull. If Galnet Audio works well i will just disable the galnet feature in eddi. If not, EDDI stays as it is ;-)

But overall i like the idea. I hope they will add a "breaking news" feature in the near future. Maybe you can enable this and Galnet Audio will directly message you that an important news has been published. That would be very great

Very much the case the majority could note care less about CL .
Really if you look at development of cp I don't think FDev are very bothered about CL there is even a legal way of doing it.
It's just a loud minority banging on the CL drum.

As for galnet audio this ads possibilities for everyone.
