Who liked the planetary surfaces

From what has been shown in the streams they do look good from orbit, but less impressive close up. Until they rework the terrain (Q4) I doubt we'll notice much difference at surface level.

They definitely backed off the previous 2.0 textures and we have not seen their like since.

Back then I had a 980ti overclocked to a pretty high degree with an OCed 6700k CPU and the 980ti ran at full boost clock any time I was on a planet for the entire time I was on that planet, and I was still not able to maintain a locked 60fps @ 1080p on Ultra.

It looked great though!

Today I have an overlocked 1080ti FTW3 running with a 2070mhz Boost Clock and an overclocked i7 7700k CPU. I am sure there are many other serious ED gamers out there like me who have done similar upgrades to their hardware since the 2.0 days.

I say... BRING IT ON FRONTIER! Give us those 2.0 planetary textures x 10! We are ready in 2018!

when will we get mining on planets with temporary bigger laods of ores that require multiple trips to unload even for the big shiips?
That would give us a reason to explore and prospect planets for a temporary but long time POI.

Either there's something wrong with my eyes, or my internet connection .. but at HD 720... this looks bad as hell. Based on this image.. definitely not impressed, but I'd rather wait until BETA to see it for myself before casting a final judgement. :)

It looks as it does now, plus colorization.

Don't think you can compare those two shots, first image is just blurry, inside and outside the cockpit. Like when a youtube video is on low res

The video said it was running at 720p.
Well, I can only compare what I've seen thus far vs what I can see in the game. I did clarify that I'm going to wait until BETA so I can see it in game for myself. :)

The resolution of the stream was very poor quality, alright.

I think the changes look good, but not drasticly different, on the ground. From space, they're much improved!

Does anyone know if they are planning to sort out the terrain normalisation in this update? It took a massive downgrade,.

Terrain height maps and features will be unchanged for 3.0, only coloring is being addressed. I too miss the far superior terrains of pre 2.2 as well.

The coloring looked great at the surface except for some texture bluriness. Probably due to the 720p stream, or maybe Ed had the graphics settings turned down some. We'll see for ourselves tomorrow.

Me. I thought they looked great. I'm looking forward to the topography changes later in the year too but the changes to the colouring looked fantastic.

What I did saw was how colorization gave different lighting effects on surface. That's what surprised me.

Anyway, soon enough now :D Can't say I am not hyped for surfaces. This year gonna be great for planetary photography for sure.

Ground detailing is something they work on to release later this year, IIRC. Including more rocks and bits for greater variety of the terrain. Hopefully better handling of collision physics while they're at it.

Is it just rocks and stuff they're working on for planetary tech? Or do we know if they'll be upgrading ELW/water/gas etc as well?

Agreed. The colourisation will also make the scenery on the floor look much better though. It should be a much more interesting experience.

We don't know. There's lot of speculation about premium content coming at the end of this year, but there might be other improvements for planetary tech, not only landable planets.

All we know that surface details (well, tech behind it) for all types of planets are coming as part of Q4/3.3 release.

I have just been to the exact same spot on Pomeche 1A that Ed nearly landed on.

In the current game, under different lighting of course, it is the most plain and boring spot you can imagine, bar that it's on the ridge between two craters.

Even the blurry video is better than the current version, and hopefully it's only blurry 'cos its a video stream.

We'll just see have to see what we'll see... ;)

Looking forward to it, anything that makes the game a bit more realistic is always welcome, IMO.

I saw some variations of beige and some whiter bits. As I say, I am sure it's just my monitor... My ocular vision is fine.

I flew to that same crater in the current build and took some screenshots to compare. The difference is night and day. I'll post them when I get back to my home computer.
