Dove Enigma UA bombed, preventing completion of its voyage in time for the man it was named for.

Emergent gameplay emerges.
Stop crying and do something about it if it is important to you.

Edit: just wanted to note i have nothing to do with that nor do i know anyone.
I wish the commander it was named for all the best and hope he keeps his spirit. And i hope enough people correct the issue. Waiting for FD to do it is not necessarily the ideal course of action. And i am not sure whether i actually like the course of action at all.

I stand with this statement. Nothing is guaranteed in the game...once it is in play. Don't turn to the devs to repair this...turn to the community and make a plea to help rectify the situation.

I have no idea about the ship, the circumstances, etc. but if there is some way for someone to do something criminal in this game it should be expected to happen.

People need to stop with the "ban" talk.

If people got banned for using what many consider in game exploits, practically the entire forum would lose their accounts.

I won't judge anyone. Wonkers be wonkers.

However, as they already said, FDev should properly investigate - if the mess was indeed result of exploit (and without "stretching it to fit the exploit jacket") - in this case full god power ahead, to revert the damage done.

If, instead, it was indeed due to use of totally normal gameplay mechanics, FDev should honestly admit that was due to their oversight, honestly apologise and be more vigilant for future events.
And yes, they deserve criticism in this case. Pros should be more careful with such important events. But only constructive well-deserved criticism - hostility is not warranted, we all human and we make mistakes.

Thank you. We are investigating and will follow up as soon as possible.

Nor can I. I just don't care though. Soz.

Look around you. Dozens of CMDRs are dropping everything to help out on this. They are going out of their way to do this, even going as far as turning around with Colonia just around the corner to tackle this.

By beating the bombers at their own game, they are taking the high ground and playing to win this one in the only decent way they know. That is a heartening thought, and an encouraging thought, that there are good and kind people out there.

I know what I would do.

I guess we now all know what you will do.

Ok I have not heard of anything to do with this until right now .. so my question is .. If I was the kind of person who liked to UA bomb stuff, and I UA bombed this mega ship .. would that make me a bad person?

I think some perspective is needed here.

The issue is, this isn't a story. This is real life, with a guy at the end of his life looking to have some fun while he can. And others seeking to ruin that.

Yes I am aware of that, "stories" are written and told about real life events. Heroics in war time, real life battles against adversity.

Good vs Evil.

From CMDR DoveEnigma on Reddit:

It shouldn’t have a black market. Period.
It’s a research vessel researching thargoid stuff. It should already be shielded.
It probably shouldn’t have been there until Thursday anyway.
I’m upset. Really upset about it.

Tying (and toying with) the personal fates of people, and especially tragic fates as is the case here, to an event in a computer game was never a good idea to begin with.
And i am in no doubt that your motivations and intentions were noble ones.
For this to work you had to make 100% sure that this would proceed dignified and without interruptions.
You didn't.
The event is tainted now, even if it comes to a successful conclusion.
What you have now is a terminally ill man, who just had that little bit more hurt piled onto him, and an angry community, which would like nothing better than to find out who caused this.
And we all better hope that they restrict their search to in-game.
Shouldn't have touched this, FD.

Wow, finally someone gets it.

Doesn't matter if it was an oversight that there is a blackmarket anymore, or if the UA bombing was achieved by legals means or exploiting.
The game mechanics doesn't matter anymore.

In the end, you really hurt a real person with terminal cancer.
The game is irrelevant at this point.
The best thing to do know is fix that, the real life situation, not the game.

The forum agendas consensus has always been the case, regardless of the underlying motive

Oh, this is somehow tied to someones last/dying wish or something?

Oh boy...
On this specific issue, as many people have mentioned, if the shut down has happened because a player has used legitimate game mechanic then we would be looking (and supporting) Commanders using in-game mechanics to reverse this.

This.

You want to put some memorial in the game, fine, great, worthwhile. But you can't pretend the rest of the game universe *doesn't* exist. You have to consider the risks and possibilities that go with that. There's many cases out there in other MMOs like this.

I never heard of this til I read this thread. Cancer patient? How fitting that it's journey is cut short by a metaphorical "cancer" of UA bombers. And how much more wonderful it'll be when the community rallies to fix it and have it finish it's journey.

Oh I'm doing something... I've got plenty of media contacts that are being made aware of this... once I did that, the CM from FDev said they are "internally investigating."

I'm doing the human thing by supporting someone who said this really hurt him, and getting developer response.

Not with Meta Alloys... with media coverage.

Unlike so many things we debate on the forum, there is a clear irrefutable right and wrong here.

I wholeheartedly commend you for using your contacts to shine a spotlight on this disgusting behaviour.

There are quite a few armchair psychologists here who believe that a person's real-life moral character can be inferred from their behavior in video games, and are therefore deserving of RL punishment.

Oh dang, are outside circumstances now going to be taken into account when talking about bans and "harassment"?

In exceptional circumstances (such as, oh, I dunno, harassing a dying man for example) I'd say that some action would be appropriate, yes.

Kudos to you for doing that! It will make a thought provoking story and is something that I think should be discussed beyond these walls.

Well, if one wanted to promote the event, create a significant public attention to it and rally the community behind it, getting many, many CMDRs to travel 50KLy in a very short time, this would be the perfect script for it. The events unfolding and the very good timing, 12 days of Enigma remaining, suggests to me that there is more to this story than one should think.

And it could also backfire terribly if not handled very delicately. The subject matter is highly sensitive to many people, myself included, so naturally emotions are running high, perhaps a bit too high.

Now I didn't sign up to the Enigma expedition, because I'm already on a fairly long one with one of my CMDRs. However I have other CMDRs available, so having read the news today about the Dove Enigma, I've decided to aid with Meta-Alloys against the Thargoid Sensor related interference for this very worthy cause.

I must also admit that I was puzzled reading the GalNet article prior to seeing this thread about the Dove Engima, Colonia: "Who would transport Thargoid Sensor's all the way to Colonia and why?". Now I know the why. Regarding the who, I suggest the one's responsible for the planning and the execution, to wait for calmer weather for a full disclosure.

Anyway, headed for Colonia with some Meta-Alloys.
