Friendly fire. Totally stupid.

Well, me and quite a few others here have found that it does.

Conspiracy?

Collective hallucination?

Or maybe it's just you?

It could be just me, except I know there are others.
Guess have to accept all of us are just not as good as you and the others.
But genuinely surprised it has never ever ever happened to you and these others.
I take off my hat to you.

It's okay, keep your hat on.

It happened to me in my first few days of playing - I thought Oops! That can happen! Better watch my scanner, fire in short bursts and use something less clumsy as this beam laser thingy!

And since then, I haven't had an incident of friendly fire.

When a single shot could land you in trouble you had to be pretty darned good, paying attention to the scanner as well as what's going on around you at all times to avoid that NPC boosting across your bows. Not impossible, but certainly not easy (I'm certainly not good enough to always avoid it). With the situation now though, where you can land some shots with just a warning message I've not had one single bounty on me for accidentally hitting anyone. Just maybe if everything goes against you at the wrong time, in which case scarper.

There is a special effect called smart rounds which makes your bulletts explode before they hit anything you dont have targetted.

Seems like this might be useful for you.

No matter how good you are there will be friendly fire incidents that are not your fault and no amount of situational awareness or trigger discipline would have made any difference.

I know. Happened to me often enough, but I don't whine on the forums about it, or stamp my foot and cry about my pipe dreams about "The other game".

Good for you.
And thanks for sharing.
Guess we should all follow your sterling example.
(Not sure what the 'other game' is, but you know and that is all that matters.).

Just had another one in the CG, where a conda flew effectively horizontally at 'high' speed across my already firing G4 beams from the side way outside of my field of view - actually rammed me from the side around nose level. Which was about the same time, I knew it was there.

Trigger discipline is sound advice. But suggesting this as a cure in all cases, while convenient is rather juvenile in my opinion.

Perhaps ultimately there is nothing to be done except accept it, but that is different.

Smart weapons switch in the hud might help and would appear to technically feasible since you can engineer smart rounds - for MC. Not sure.

Beams are hitscan weapons, which means if you immediately release the trigger, they stop firing. No bullet travel.
Slow moving projectiles can be forgiven in this case, because once they're released, that's it. You can't stop them.

That said, your scanner gives you all the information you need to check your surroundings without even looking out of the window.

On top of that, you can actually hear ships that are nearby, and depending on your audio setup (headphones, surround sound, etc), you can tell exactly where they are, and which direction they're going.
(And before you say it, I play on a TV, using TV speakers, and I can tell. Lol)

The ONLY time friendly fire is basically unavoidable, is if your missiles are effected by an ECM, and veer off course and hit something else, or their splash damage triggers an assault bounty. But this is the risk of using guided AOE weapons, and you accept it when you install one.

But, accidents will happen.
There's no denying it, we're all human, and we make mistakes.
I still trigger Assault Bounties occasionally. I just deal with it, I don't dedicate an entire threat to how silly the mechanics are. Lol
I just use the 8~ minutes to go off and rearm and repair, or make a coffee and have a stretch.
There are far more annoying things in ED to complain about. :p

What a useless reply, go away.

Another useless reply.

What eloquent extemporaneous dissertation from one so woefully inept. People here are offering advice on how to effectively avoid excessive fines and bounties, but you cannot be bothered to listen. In fact, your response rises only to the level of "Nuh-uh...your being mean" Might I suggest you run through the training simulations a few thousand more times and learn how to use ALL of the tools available to you??? Trigger discipline and situational awareness are not that hard to master - I've gone for over a year without a SINGLE fine or bounty - and I have neurological problems that cause tremors and spasms in my hands and fingers. The HUD already TELLS you where EVERYONE in range is and is going - USE IT. Then if you see someone potentially moving into your firing arc LAY OFF THE TRIGGER. It is NOT that hard.

Spent most of the weekend in conflict zones with a wingmate. Both of us are long time Elite veterans and there was not a single friendly fire incident between us. A relatively new player with us? Had three or four. Once he started paying closer attention to his shooting, it dropped to zero.

Paying attention works. Get smart rounds if you can't be bothered. It'll save your DPS in the long run too since you won't be getting blown up or chased out of the instance.

What would you say your friend "got" then, Phisto?

In any case how is the game supposed to tell when it's friendly fire and when it's not?

That's easy enough:

1. When it's intentional, I'm thinking "Ha! Die fool!"

2. When It's unintentional, I'm thinking "Oops! Sorry, my bad."

That the game can't figure out something so obvious is one of its greatest shortcomings.

If you're stealing Fed kills, you get what you get. Be more careful. If they are coming to your assistance against your will, turn "report crimes against me" off.
