So my car insurance is up for renewal.

Ive been driving for like 15 years with no accidents or claims. Woop.
I owned an automatic Saab diesel, worth about £1000. Lol maybe.
God knows how many no claims. 11 or 12 years...

My current insurance is about £560 a year.
Next year's renewal quote with the same company is now £670.... Have I suddenly become a liability?

That's not all.

My girlfriend (27) wants to learn to drive. Using my car. Lol
So I did an online comparison with her on my insurance.
As. A. Learner.

£450.

I don't get it.

Without her on my insurance, it's £400.

So what insurance companies are saying is, I'm a liability, despite no evidence to prove otherwise. lol

Why would my insurance even go up?
They're basically saying they don't want me as a customer anymore, go away. Lol

Similar to how people who work hard, take risks and display some aptitude for earning are expected to carry the welfare state on their backs, those of us who don't make claims exist in order to subsidize those who do.

This capitalism thing is a funny form of socialism.

Well said.

As for car insurance: The write-off value of the vehicle after a period of depreciation makes it next to impossible with older cars to safely insure them (it seems) to what should be their replacement value.

To insurance companies their always exists a presumed liability against the value of the item insured.

OP the liability is not strictly you; insurance is a form of "gambling" (for want of a better word) where the insurer is gambling that a liability won't arise.

That's why in car insurance (at least here) the insurer will go after the other party (or their insurer) for restitution of any claim you may make if the other party carries the "at fault liability".

This gamble is offset against the write-off value of the vehicle in car insurance and you may find that a lot of rises in premiums are passed on to consumers as "a rise in the cost of administration".

And yes; that's a rip-off.

Welfare state exist to stop revolutions.

Remember the American revolution happened because the oppressed masses revolted.

Just wait till you get married and see what your liabilities are then LOL

Never fly without rebuy.

Couldn't resist.

Stop stalking my posts. Lol

Incidentally. I don't have enough for a rebuy. :p

If my insurance wrote off my car (which it would, if I so muched as scuffed my bumper), they'd pay out far less than I actually paid for it.

Leaving me with an even older cheaper car. Lol

I was a bit of a fool about a year ago.
When I had my old Vectra saloon (really old, really rough) someone drove in to the back of me on a roundabout.

But my vectra was like a tank, and I had a tow bar.
So my cars only sign of an impact was the dirt was removed from my rear bumper. Lol
But the other car was a mess.

No one was hurt or anything, so I said I wouldn't go through the insurance because I had nothing to claim for.
(Because they would have just wrote off my vectra).
I didn't even ask for money.

And that's where I went wrong. Lol
About 6 months later my car developed a serious terminal fault in the subframe, so I had to scrap it (totally unrelated to the bump).
So I should have gone through the insurance, then I could have got something for my car, instead of scrapping it for £180. Lol

Live and learn. I'm too nice.

But now if I see a car tailgating me, I'm like "oooh, go on, I need some money.." lol

I hope you'll be a better actor than this guy!
Not really of course. Just a good ad for carrying a dashcam.

More and more ppl use dashcams, and you might even get a bonus on insurance by doing so. Of course frauds like this do cause premiums to rise and fall, nothing to do with you - not to mention inflation happening, in general.

As usual, worth 2/3 quotes probably every time you renew. Though a pain, I believe sites like compare the market dot com remember your details, so you should at least be able to tell your provider 'could get this cheaper elsewhere' without going for a full quote. If they really want your business, to improve on what they offer you is surely worth a try.

Or you could go down my route of course .. I don't have a car. :D

I let my dear mother drive my car. I received several council notice cctV fines.. which I am liable to pay.

With car insurance you are paying to cover all the other people who don't have insurance and the cost of the other accidents.

Same with building insurance.

Building insurance should be compulsory maybe it would be come cheaper.

Insurance is high to cover cost of those silly adverts.

Yer right, and Id shop around cos yer insurance company is utter tripe. I have two cars insured, one an alfa romeo worth about 3 grand and with higher premiums fer vehicle modifications...and an old toyota I mess around in.

Total bill per year fer both cars combined is 360 notes fully comp and with a years membership to the AA thrown in and free windscreen replacement anywhere in the UK anytime 24/7. And thats in a supposedly high risk area so like I say...ye might wanna shop around a bit cos yer paying a helluva lot more than ye should be imo.

Only real difference being Ive been driving 27 years but lost my licence many years ago fer driving offences...currently have the same 12 years no claims bonus, past is past. The company is local based too and wont deal with anyone no living in Ulster...english companies all charge way too much so stopped using them ages ago ^

The high risk area is always a good one. If you move home, no matter where you relocate to, all insurance companies adjust your premium upward as you only seem to move to a higher risk post code. That outweighs any factors like moving from on-street to off-street parking. The crooks insure cars rather than steal them these days.

Having worked in insurance, the renewal price isn't based on liability or added risk (if your circumstances haven't changed), it's there to make more money for the insurance company.

Most insurance is set to auto renew, so unless you shop around and look for better deals, you'll end up paying more. Most people, I'm afraid to say, don't shop around and hence the insurance company make a few more quid out of you than if you'd run your details through even the most rudimentary price comparison site. Back in the day NCB (which again insurers will only consider 3 years of, no matter how many you have e.g. the discount doesn't increase for 3-4 or 5 years but maxes out at 3) DID lead to a lower premium, but now as the insurance market is more cut throat the opposite happens.

The renewal price should be seen as a starting point, even with basic haggling you should be able to get it down.

Have a read of this if you can be bothered:- https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance and you're UK based.

The only other thing to be careful of is to make sure you are comparing apples with apples - so make sure you have NCB protected, legal cover etc if you have it already etc etc.

Play with your job title, add a parent or spouse sometimes, get an accurate £ for your car and so on. I can tell you the worst job titles are Scrap Dealer, Taxi Driver and anything in entertainment like Musician, Actor etc etc. The best is Librarian if you were wondering.

p.s. @Verminstar UK companies charge an OUTRAGEOUS amount for any BT postcode, never use a mainstream company if you live in Ulster!

Car insurance, specifically the legal requirement to maintain liability insurance, is the scammiest of the scammy scams.
