Modes Almost Four Hours in Private Groups/Solo

OK, so I get so tired of the True Believers going off on how great Solo and Private Groups are. So, I thought I'd go ahead and give it a try, knowing full well what to expect. I wasn't disappointed.

I bought an unshielded Anaconda and spent an hour trading back and forth without a care in the world, using the docking computer and watching Netflix on my telly due to the lack of attention and engagement the game required. I was impressed with the Blue Danube theme, and lack of risk the mode offered, with the threat of interdiction being absolutely laughable.

Feeling a little upset my cr/hr ratio wasn't great, I put an SRV hangard on my new Annie and went to a nearby system that had loads of ground attack missiosn, which I logged in/out of the various modes 13 or 14 times to max out 20 missions, then flew to the ground attack site, dismissed my ship and parked my SRV next to the generator in my SRV, blew it up and exited/entered the game to repeatedly attack the generator with no risk to myself. I felt great satisfaction and immersion as I smashed the generators. It doesn't matter it was owned by a Player Faction and will have wrecked their influence, because it's a legitimate gameplay choice. Sorry, but you don't own your faction really and it's a shared universe!

Feeling this strange sense in my gut I wasn't getting anywhere near the level of satisfaction I get from flying in Open, I decided Combat might finally give me the fix I needed. Bolting some turret weapons onto my Annie, and replacing the SRV with a fighter and a good crewman I set off for the nearest RES site. The feeling of satisfaction, as my turrets and fighter pilot did all the work, racking up kills and credits while I sat their sipping my tea and literally touching one or two buttons every few minutes was unrivalled by anything that flying as an Open mode multi-role trader has ever yielded.

You know like, so I hate 'realistic' first person shooters, but there was this guy right, who was all like, whoa first person shooters are great man, and I was all like, nuh uh, first person shooters are just boring dude, and he was all like, no way, and then I was all like, so way, and then he just went pssssh, so I played a first person shooter, and it was all like boring and stuff, and pointing guns at things which is like, hello? is this even a game, I mean like come on man, so I went to the guy and I said, oh yeah, I just played a first person shooter and I hated it, so there, and I thought that was it, but no, he was all like, pssssh, whatevah.

I really miss Bran.

It's a shame you don't apply the following mentality

Seriously, what is the need by Open advocates to constantly tell us they play in Open?

To the threads about how Open mode naysayers constantly tell us the (exaggerated) dangers of playing in open. Or the threads about how great solo/pg are.

It's almost like you want one side to stop, but are happy for the other to keep spouting nonsense because it's your preferred viewpoint.

This is a strange post about a player looking for playing satisfaction; but using Turrets and SLF to do the work for them.

I love running BGS in Private group and watching people say "Why didn't you do it in Open so I can use my Federal Assault Ship I spent 1500 hours building as a crutch for my terrible BGS play!"

Love how you ignored my post where I said those who complain about open are as bad as those who make posts about how great it is.
I also said neither serve any purpose and should be removed.

But that doesn't suit your narrative does it, posting the full truth.

lol, I like the style OP, nice reply to an earlier thread.

I've played all 3 modes over the years. I played solo at first cos I was useless at so many aspects I needed to "git average". I also used PG's but with limited success / interaction. I went to open last year and stayed. I'm now about "git above average" I can evade (Thanks Rinzler, that video....), do hurtful dakka - dakka and make Commanders run away. I have the odd chat with commanders, including, as (Kill) Bill said "Murdering B'stards" but sometimes its just an o7. I used turrets once...I still feel ashamed. I have never used a docking confuser or felt the need to spam, use exploits or do the cash cow runs. I just play my way. Hopefully we all play our way.

No judgement was implied in this message.

Or the threads about how great solo/pg are.

Got the links or just creating pwetend forum bogeymen again to try and 'prove a point'?

Oh, and make sure it is threads, (plural), for said subject and not the odd post here and there.

..... I have never used a docking confuser ......

When I bought my first Anaconda I fitted one of those as I was worried about docking.

While I was undocking for the first time, I suddenly thought - if I can get it out of the slot, then I can get it in the slot.
So I turned it off in the modules tab, docked and removed it.

I did however fit one after Horizons came out for a giggle, to see how it would handle landing on planets.
I'd done several landings myself at this point and was happy with my progress, but curiosity got the best of me.
Seeing the manoeuvres it pulled scared the life out of me. I had to interrupt the sequence and dock manually.
I genuinely thought I was going to lose my ship if I let the DC keep going, it kept boosting at one of the buildings for no reason.

I've never fitted one since, not even out of curiosity.

The best bit is, players with the same attitude keep posting public videos to YouTube or live streaming their ganking sprees.
So he can claim he plays open and frolics with the faeries and unicorns in safety all day, one link to certain streaming channels proves how bad some players are in open.

Conclusion, play the mode that suits you.

Can we then say Open vs PG/solo threads are outdated now?

If you're going to pretend that we don't have the types of threads I just described, then there's not much point discussing things further.

Ah the vague 'Goose is a ganker/griefer' assumption because he plays in open and knows the risks. How I've missed you.

Not at all, never once said you are one of them. As you've posted more thna once saying you're not one of them.
But you post like they do on the forums.

So you're actually worse than them, you're a sympathiser, a collaborator, a fraterniser :p ;)

Not sure I ascribe to the "guilt by association" theories, but with that I'd like to say I'm an advocate for player choice... the more choice, the better.

Having said that- it's clear to me that pigeonholing game play styles into a single FFA collaborative mode doesn't offer much in terms of choice.

  • Open (PvP)
  • Open (PvE) (formerly known as "Private Groups" but with friendly fire disabled completely)
  • Solo
This would be the optimal choice offering. Everyone gets their own area to play in, the way they want to play- either with others, or alone.

If Open PvE were to be the "death knell" of Open itself- then perhaps it's meant to be. You can call it "Emergent Development", then. ;)

May the best choice win!

(Never thought the sentiment for "emergence" had such utility in application before!!!! Astounding!) :D

As someone with anti-social friends and friends with very poor internet;

  • Open (PvP)
  • Open (PvE)
  • Private Group (private play with friends)
  • Solo

Is what they need.
One because more than 5 people in an instance will trigger them and their anxiety, and 1 because more than 3 in an instance triggers their router into a meltdown.

If it's anything like the PvE experience I've witnessed on Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer, people will still find ways to harass other people even if firing on them is locked away. For instance, it was quite common for people to repeatedly run people over with their horses in RDR's PvE. It doesn't do any damage, but it does knock you over and gets highly annoying if someone won't leave you alone.
