Rares... Is it time these got some love?

When I started the game in the second half of 2016 rares trading was the way for starting players who weren't focused on combat to make money quickly. I remember using the map from this thread:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/223321-Rares-Trading-Metro-Map

and several spreadsheets to plan my routes. It was great. Took me all over the bubble and allowed me to work my way through a Hauler, an Adder, a Cobra, a T-6 and finally an AspX. I was kind of sad when I got my T-7 and could carry enough cargo that short-haul trading earned more per hour.

Now, of course, the Road to Riches offers a starting player ten times the hourly rate once he's made enough to spring for a DSS.

It would take a heck of a buff to enable rares trading to compete with that.

I think that just goes to show how out of date the current game play around rares is...

Good points though!

I’m a fan of rares but they could do with some imagination.
I enjoyed doing that 72 hop rare route and it got me enough to buy ships through to my current Asp.
I could just potter around, doing some missions, picking up some rares, seeing different places.
But there isn’t much “rare “ about them.
A few are in permit locked systems which is good as it promotes working for the permit but as you all say the 17k/t just doesn’t justify that effort.
They should be in far flung places and then worth the effort.
Heck Meta Alloys at 88k/t and the need to find and harvest them - ow THATS a rare good

I’m not a fan of the current credit grind race though and the size of the road to riches trek makes me weep looking at it.

Meta Alloys is a good comparison, at least in value terms.

600k wasn't bad back in the days... nowadays most commanders wouldn't even consider to move a finger let alone their entire ship for that.

This ^^

Credit inflation killed Rares

When you can take multi-million one hop missions running rares is just a hobby

I made my first millions with Rare trades. Would be nice to see this area of the game get some growth.

Maybe missions to source a number of rares and types of rares for a rare broker or some such.

20t Lavian brandy, 14t Leestian Evil Juice and 30t of Live Hecate Sea Worms - 10 hours. Cr-3m.

Rare brokers unlock new rare brokers (like engineers) with increasing profit potential.

I said a month or two back that the allocations need a review. It's totally reasonable to cap them in principle but the actual amounts don't really work in terms of the game these days. Trading in general is one of the worst possible things to do to make money in the game, which is barmy to begin with. Giving the rares allocations a common sense review would be one way of addressing that.

I like it! Good idea! Reped.

There is an other thing FD could do wrt to rares :

Make rares more valuable to sell in boom state systems and tourist economies for luxuries, in outbreaks for medical ones, etc...

An other low hanging fruit would be to have luxury passenger missions asking for them for a good bonus payout. Heck, you could even plan
for it and have a few crates of kamitra cigars, tranquil tea and lavian brandy laying arround for just such occasions ;)

Buff the payouts........but make it a smuggle thing.
Like the good ol' smuggling days.
Have to use silent running, boost in and out of stations etc.
Oh, and ships after you like the long haul Sothis etc runs.
Those could get dicey.

A bit of gameplay to help even out against the high paying but boring passenger runs.
